Reviewer's comments
"While I appreciate all the custom textures and objects, as a whole this level just didn't quite click with me visually. The textures seemed to clash a lot (especially when combined with standard TR textures), and there were the usual first try issues with compressed, stretched and misaligned textures. I ran out of flares along the way, despite the lighting being on the simplistic side, and overall most of the rooms were flat and boxy. Lara with a clown make up was quite a bold choice, and while visually it didn't quite hold up, the background audio selection was brilliant. I also enjoyed the lightning strikes while getting to the top of the pyramid (even though at the very top you also get a few more design issues with the pyramid itself). 45 minutes, 2 secrets. 10/21" - Treeble (24-Oct-2021)
"Lara's sporting quite a disturbing and clown-ish new look which made her look rather scary. The clones she encounters on her journey through this castle look much more like what her normal appearance would. The textures here could have done with a bit more fine tuning and I really would have liked some more flares as I had trouble spotting that one particular column was climbable, but the atmosphere and music use was brilliantly imposing. There's also a few tigers around, but you probably won't have to deal with them if you're nimble enough. I thought that the final sequence was particularly neat: climbing up to the top of a huge structure while lightning strikes all around you, using a lever to open the exit and then making your way back down again. About 45 minutes of fun." - Ryan (18-Mar-2019)
"In this quirky little level Lara is made to look like The Joker out of the Batman comics, and along the way she encounters female enemies who much more closely resemble her normal appearance. There are also tigers, some of which attack while others don't. Much of the level is too dark for my tastes, but Yoav's walkthrough kept me on the right track. Mushrooms double as medipacks, and there are scads of them scattered along the way if you happen to be looking for them. Unless you're using the walkthrough, it's easy to miss the jumpswitches that are placed in spots you wouldn't normally expect. The fun lasts for about an hour, climaxed by a winding trip up a huge pyramid, only to be forced to make your way back down to reach the exit door." - Phil (21-Aug-2016)
"Difficult to review this custom. Lara in clown costume is on mystery and magical land. We'll visit some nice forests, beautiful gardens and some rooms. Beauty music and wonderful atmosphere. Textures are very well choosen." - Andzia9 (18-Aug-2010)
"Despite the surreal landscapes, weird and wonderful objects and bizarre (and slightly scary)playable Clown character, this is little more than your usual 'search for the lever to open the next door' level;and,it has to be said,it's all rather monotonous and not a little cheaty at times(placing a lever inside a solid-looking object...what a very poor show!) The landscapes may be intentionally surreal, but that doesn't excuse all the missing and stretched textures;and the zanyness gets a little tiring after a while. Nevertheless,I'm prepared to forgive it many of its faults due to the beautiful and romantic music score and the absolutely ravishing Finale. It may well take an hour to get there, but at least it's finally worth it. Ultimately,it's not a level for everyone's tastes;but those who enjoy 'Oxy-raiding' will probably find plenty to amuse them." - Orbit Dream (10-Jun-2009)
"What started out with a lot of potential with a great looking environment, lake with waterfall in a snowy landscape, soon turned into one large square outdoor area after another, in between going inside where you came across smaller square rooms. The environment also totally left the snowy look behind when you left the first area and became more a jungly look with one place that felt like a castle and the ending with a huge pyramid that you have to tediously circumvent over and over to get to the top. But the worst thing I would undoubtedly have to say was the look of Lara...she can only best be described as looking like the bastard child of a drunken night between Marilyn Manson and The Joker. She is HIDEOUS!!! Now don't get me wrong, there was a certain pull this hour long level had for me and I was intrigued pretty much right up to the end but I'm not really sure why. I can only say check it out for yourself but make sure you aren't eating because Lara may just put you off your food." - Sash (01-Nov-2005)
"First of all, this level scared me! The music, and Laras evil look! The atmosphere is very good and the eerie feeling of beeing in a place you should not be in.. is strong :) I had some crashing problem at the frist rooms but after beeing careful to save often, the crashes stoped later on. A lot of work from this author creating (or providing) the cool (but scary!) outfit, the objects and the music. Overall a good level and I will certainly try the sequels." - QRS (25-Oct-2005)
"Not a bad debut level and quite a dramatic introduction flyby. The clownfaced Lara takes some getting used to, but otherwise some of the customising touches like the medipacks are nicely done. Enemies are crocodiles, tigers and Lara clones in colourful red costume. There are plenty of jumpswitches and a bit of target shooting, so keep your eyes wide open. The two secrets (the eye pieces) cannot be missed as you have to pass by those. You get some pole swinging and tightrope walking here as well and the electrical currents near the end were an impressive sight. 45 minutes of solid raiding with only a few beginners mistake near the end of the level (wrong OCB for spikes, thin walls,...). Good start for the series." - MichaelP (09-Oct-2005)
"This level was a good adventure. But because of the faulty editing, a great part of the level can be skipped, right at the beginning you can get to the pyramid. Only in this case you will miss a great adventure and two secrets as well. The textures are beautiful and various, and the added sounds are also great. We are adventuring on the shore of a river, then in a forrest, among the ruins of a castle. The enemies are crocodiles, gunwomen (hahaha), tigers and a knight. At the beginning of the level you better wait until the cut-scene ends, or else the game will quit. I can only suggest to play this great level for everybody! :) You can find a Hungarian walkthrough (as we don't have English version), savegames and pictures here: http://treditor.freeweb.hu/15/the_door_for_the_paradise.htm" - Obig (02-Sep-2005)
"I don't like Lara's face, isn't nice. Geometry very simply, only rectangles and squares. Textures bad applied. Enemies trapped with no movement waiting for you to shot is bored. Many, many times game crashes and go back to Windows with no reason so I had to abandon the game before finish it." - Jose (28-Jul-2005)
I thought it was a really fun level to play; it was also quite zany as Lara is re constructed as some clown type figure which I found quite spooky. You will start off in the snowy mountains, then take a trip under water and then make your way through to a garden area to explore its attached rooms. All was nicely in place and I liked the flow of the game play. You have to find the two halves of the Eye of Horus and place it to open the way to leave. Other than that you're really just scouting for weapons, crowbar, and mushroom shaped med packs, cute! I had one crash at the start but that was only if I went up on the mountain top where I didn't need to be anyway. Enemies are tigers, crocodiles, and original looking Laras. Nice looking level, easy flow game play, a tad on the weird side, but I liked it all the same. - Moonpooka (22-Jul-2005)
Don't be frightened when you see Lara's face. In my opinion she looks awful and I didn't like her looking like a nasty clown. The outside area is nice with the trees but the usual bug appears, 'the end of the world' which spoils the atmosphere. The lighting was bad and some objects, like trees weren't touching the ground. You'll encounter tigers and have to find the Eye of Horus. The Stonehenge trick, in the castle area was nice but not so easy to break and reveal the lever. I found two secrets. - Kristina (27-Jun-2005)
What a weird and wonderful setting and why does Lara look like a clown? There's something rather fascinating about this level, with its beautiful textures and haunting music. The gameplay isn't bad either and some of the switches are really well hidden. Enemies are Lara lookalikes and tigers and at one point a horseman, but I couldn't seem to wound him so I just ran away. I thought this was an imaginative and enjoyable first time level and I certainly want to see more from this builder. - Jay (27-Jun-2005)
If this is a first and I think that the author is a brave person to re-texture and use custom made objects in abundance as he has in this level. I could do without the appearance of our heroine as she looked like a clown. The beginning of this game made my computer crash right after I shot the crocs in one go. Had another crash a bit later on but from that moment no more crashes. Pick up the mushroom as those are your medipacks. I could use more flares in this game and less of the medipacks though. It isn't a hard level but you have to keep your eyes open at least that is what I found out. Personally I loved the added music and if this builder decided to continue, I for sure will have a go at his next level. 13-06-2005 - Gerty (20-Jun-2005)
Once one gets through the beginning crashes and the surprise of Lara's look, this quirky level becomes a lot of fun. There are mushrooms to collect as medipacks, look-alike-Lara enemies (that sometimes are going the wrong way) and some really interesting puzzles. The hidden lever in the Stonehenge and the Bars to get over lava are two that are really memorable. Also memorable are the colors the author uses in some of the rooms. I think of it as the 'Italian Touch'. The use of thunder and a stormy sky add atmosphere. There's talent here and I hope to see more from this builder. A very good first effort. - Bene (20-Jun-2005)
"The setting of this level seems like it was meant to be whimsically fantastic. Alas, the clown-like costume and make-up of this Lara did remind me of the current Michael Jackson. Here, this clown Lara must shoot normal-looking Lara's and white tigers - neither of which I like doing. The gameplay is pretty easy, except when things are very craftily hidden - such as the switch inside the Stonehenge and the black switch in the black room at the end of the crawl space. The level is very dark, which did not make it mysterious for me - only murky. I wanted to like this piece, and it is fun to play, but, for me, the oddness did not add up to whimsical fantasy. Instead, it felt a bit disconnected and unfinished. I say these things as I feel the author has talent, and I want them to develop and do better levels. Please." - Duncan (18-Jun-2005)
"Despite the extremely exciting Lara I didn't find this level all that rewarding. Neat ideas like the bar swinging and shooting the Laras were great, along with Lara's rather indescribable visage. I didn't seem to find much of a paradise after that door so it was a little disappointing; but then again, trying to create paradise in a level editor would probably be tricky, more so even than the Amber Room. So I don't know if I would recommend it, the environment makes me feel chilly and a bit bored, but it's not really a bad level to play." - Capt. Abbey (17-Jun-2005)
"I guess I had envisioned paradise a little differently...and Lara as a vampire? The level itself isn't bad but the textures are a bit carelessly applied with several graphics errors that could be worked. You need to find the Eye of Horus - fairly easy. A few levers to pull. I liked the tightrope walking and the somersault jumps from the bar. Enemies were tigers, knights and Lara's alter ego. I did like sound and atmosphere. Hope to see more in a next level." - Engelchen Lara (17-Jun-2005)
"'Retro-Lara' begins this raid by a snowy river-side, complete with alligators (these tropical beasts having strayed off their beaten path). Lara bears such a close resemblance to Michael Jackson in what I term her 'retro' look that I found her most disturbing to look at. That expression of hers also must be responsible for the problematic game crashes that occur early in this game. Ah, but I digress. You will begin your raid by searching for the crowbar. The pick-ups are generously laid about the place...so keep a sharp eye out for them. There are some interesting puzzles along the way and the use of the bar-swing is always one of my favorites. Some objects are well hidden and I think you will enjoy the search. I would have gladly exchanged a toadstool for a flare or two! And shooting Lara-look-alikes seemed somewhat traitorous. Oh well. This game is fun!" - Mugs (12-Jun-2005)
