Reviewer's comments
"Well its a nice little snowy setting with good textures cameras, objects and sounds, now as for the gameplay its mostly in and out of buildings collecting bells, lighting torches, pushing a few items and of course lots of levers to find and pull but thats about it for the tasks and so it got very dull very quick for me unfortunately, i commend all the nice touches like the cows in the barn and the layout even though i did get a little bit lost trying to remember where places were etc at least there were camera clues pointing the way. Its a nice level to explore around but the environments lacked much variety and so if there isnt any interesting puzzles, enemies, timed tasks or traps to do then you might get a bit bored like myself" - John (21-Dec-2021)
"A peaceful and Christmassy level that might just be able to get you into the festive mood. The town setting is quite charming, the songs and audio tracks are nicely accompanying you across your way and there are several cute touches like the cow stable or the quite large titular belfry. Perhaps the setting is too much two-dimensional, with a lot of low walls and end of the world moments, additionally there's much running to and fro between places in the city. Also, there were several nastily hidden switches that have the same colour as the wall behind them, but I still had a bit of fun here exploring this charming setting, especially the torch adds at least a bit of decent gameplay which is otherwise a bit monotonous. The secrets aren't that well hidden actually, and I could have done without the maze towards the end, but with the final flyby I think the 20 minutes I spent here plus the atmospheric setting were rewarding enough to make the time spent here worthwhile." - manarch2 (09-Dec-2017)
"A beautiful setting and one I completed before but failed to review (maybe the site was down). Although linear, if your geographics are not great you can get lost but I used the "central lake" as a sort of guideline. Beautiful village with a few hard-to-find wall switches. Well worth the effort though for the beautiful conclusion. Very worthwhile :)" - High Priestess (16-Nov-2017)
"This is an excellent Advent level. It is quite simple and at times sneaky, but it is most satisfying. Charming, quaint ambience, fun gameplay and nice sounds, especially the song at the end. Great work!" - Ryan (26-Apr-2016)
"This is one of the very best Advent levels I've yet played. Although a touch too sneaky at times, the deeply explorational nature of the gameplay worked exceptionally well within such a charming, intimate and superbly crafted environment as that presened here.Progression was interesting and enjoyable;the details were utterly delightful (the stable of cute cows within a little valley;the charming furniture in the bedrooms;the stunning Church tower);the atmosphere was perfect;the lighting atmospheric;and, best of all,the textures were original and made the quaint rustic village location such a refreshing change from the usual 'Xmas Town'.The puzzles were not difficult to work out,the storyline was charmingly developed, and the resultant Finale was the icing on the cake.A thoroughly enjoyable seasonal adventure!" - Orbit Dream (21-Dec-2013)
"A lovely Christmas setting and just what I needed as a mood changer. I am so glad that the Review contest gave me the push to get back to finish it. Set in a small, perfectly constructed little town, Lara is on a search for four bells to return to the Belfry. Once accomplished, this ends with a fly by of the town, bells ringing, the snow continuing to fall and with the very appropriate and nostalgic 'Jingle Bell Rock' sound track playing. Nothing too difficult - lots of exploring and nice touches like the mistletoe torch make this a wonderful Christmas gift. Or, in my case, a wonderful anytime gift. A nice reminder of the joy that is Christmas." - Bene (28-Oct-2008)
"A very nice Christmas level that is suitable for the kiddies (as these levels should be)... no traps, enemies, enigmatic puzzles... although you do have to search for some very well disguised or hidden switches. The Belfry, of the title, is missing four bells. Perhaps the inhabitants of this lovely but deserted little village are all out searching for them. And perhaps Lara has decided to spend her holidays here. And as she's used to much more dangerous exploring than this she quickly finds all the bells, replaces them, and summons the villagers. But it's not so straight forward, as the joker who hid the bells has done a good job. Lara will find a useful torch to help light some rather dark places, so it's a good idea to bring it with you everywhere. The level can be played on the mac (thank you BaGi and Hochgiftig), but the music didn't kick in in the level. If the player has, say Quicktime, they can listen to it playing in the background." - CC (12-May-2008)
"What a charming little town. Not my favourite gameplay as I am a total idiot in keeping directions, but this wasn't so hard luckily. Here you have to find the bells for the belfry and they are nicely hidden. I loved the stables with the cows and that brought a smile on my face." - Gerty (09-Mar-2008)
"It seems like this year the builders have outdone themselves with the Christmas levels. I have to admire this one as well because of its structure and the beautiful houses; even the maze was pleasant if you can believe that. There are quite a few keys to find though and four missing bells to place on the tower. The quest is very interesting and the moveable objects are not to be expected, just think what you could move in a house and you'll be OK. The two secrets were well hidden but not impossible to find so I enjoyed searching for them. I was thinking that with such levels it would be nice to have Christmas more often LOL but then again we would be tired of it in the end, so once a year is just fine for such a treat. Well done to Barbara and Jens." - Kristina (26-Jan-2008)
"Really a cute and fun level to play. Lara is in a georgous outfit in a snowy enviorment, my favorite! This is an amazing adventure, and it starts off with a little block puzzle at first. The puzzles and gameplay were very nice, but could use a lot of touching up in some bland places. The textures were great, and it fit in well with the enviorment. The objects were very nice, but the enemies weren't really a part of the game. Lighting was nice, and the sounds were great! I hope there will be even better costum levels like this, happy raiding!" - Vaughnage (19-Dec-2007)
"Lara must find 4 missing bells and return them to the belfry. The gameplay is full of very cleverly placed levers and several easy-to-glance-over moveable objects. The objects were great (a sprig of holly to place atop a Christmas pudding--brilliant!) The village is quite atmospheric, but didn't have as powerful an effect as other Christmas levels i've played. My only critiques would be: (1) The belfry seemed disproportionate in scale to the rest of the levels rooms and courtyards. (2) It seemed like there was a good bit of village front walls that were insignificant to gameplay. (3) i didn't think the ending Christmas music matched the visual atmosphere of the rest of the level." - drguycrain (19-Dec-2007)
"Another christmas level through a small and nice village by night. The level is dark and it's well lightened and textured but the author only gave us three ridiculous flares to search for a lot of hard-to-see wall switches we need to find, although there is a torch to help in this task. When I found some flares was near the end of the level when I couldn't use them 'cause the flare bug :-( The four bells are not difficult to find, and I only found three secrets. No enemies, very easy to play, there are enough cameras to help you to finish this peaceful level." - Jose (19-Dec-2007)
"This is a nice start to the Advent level season. The surroundings are quaint and seasonal, and there's a nice ending touch with the fragment from the original recording of "Jingle Bell Rock" by Bobby Helms, which I actually remember from my boyhood days. Fun, and not too difficult. Recommended." - Phil (19-Dec-2007)
"Take a little village or a part of a town in the snow, base your gameplay on exploration to find the elusive switch or the appropriate object to use, and you have basically a so-called Christmas level. Here , this is a village that Lara has to explore, and the place is rich in details and objects making it very believable and realistic, that is a very good point to the level and I suppose the authors enjoyed building such a place. Other good points are the good texturing and the friendly cameras which are quite needed. Well made level overall, and recommanded if you like to wander around searching what to do next or what you have missed." - eRIC (16-Dec-2007)
"From the nice and long intro flyby that shows you around the village you set out in this 40 minute long level of exploration to find a series of sometimes well hidden (as in: hard to see) levers. You get to use a torch a few times and push a few tables and barrels around to find the four bells and eventually climb the tower to make them ring, accompanied by another nice ending flyby. So, it is all about the wonderful atmosphere which I really enjoyed, but the actual gameplay was a bit tedious with the running around finding the next elusive switch. There is also a small maze, the flare bug and you can see and stand on an invisible block in the bell tower, but those are minor issue and all made up for by the funny cow stable. A quick raid in the festive season." - MichaelP (16-Dec-2007)
"Next up this Advent, Lara's off exploring a sleepy little town to find its lost bells. The town is charmingly rural and convincingly built, if perhaps a bit dark and melancholy considering it's nearly Christmas. (Quite an accurate portrayal of an English winter, in that respect, just more fun!) Finding switches, keys and pushable objects are the main gameplay staples - easy and relaxing, though I ended up doing a lot of backtracking and found some of the switches very hard to see. There's plenty to explore, and the authors included some really charming touches, like a stable of mooing cows and a stick of holly that Lara can use as a torch. Another enjoyable Advent level, completed in an hour and twenty minutes with three secrets found." - Ampersand (13-Dec-2007)
"Magnificent xmas level , I have been under the spell throughout the game, it is really very beautiful with the snow falling all the time! Fairly easy, but we have to look everywhere! I found all the secrets (fairly easy), but I had a little trouble finding two bells (I missed a switch). Belle barn with the cows who are watching us. I recommend it." - Minox (13-Dec-2007)
"Another peaceful Christmas adventure in an adorable small village, I loved its charming atmosphere. The fairly easy to-dos fits for an Advent level, if you still get stuck just go around and look for levers. Very nice objects, especially the cows, they also 'speak', nice touch. The secrets could have been wrapped as if were presents, since there was no need for medipacks. I enjoyed the hour or so I spent here, and recommend it to all." - Akcy (07-Dec-2007)
"A rustic English village was the backdrop for this Christmas level. It is a pretty dark village and there are many well-hidden switches that will frustrate you. I got confused a lot and wasn't really sure what to do next a few times, but I eventually made it through. The level wasn't especially festive, but a pretty good level for the holidays." - Shandroid (06-Dec-2007)
"Oh lovely, more snow and a pretty little village to explore in search of four missing bells. It's a suitably charming Advent level with some nice objects to use and I absolutely adored the cow shed with its quirky looking inhabitants who mooed at Lara. Plus, I actually found all the secrets - now I know it's Christmas." - Jay (05-Dec-2007)
"Another Christmas level released, and more fun to be had. This time Lara's objective is to find 4 bells scattered across town, and in order to do this she has to do some breaking-and-entering into other people's homes and occasionally smash their windows. I can't imagine the residents would be best pleased with her. The gameplay to be found here is quite fun at times, and exploring the many buildings and solving the odd torch puzzle was nice. That said, after trekking through the town several times I began to get a bit weary of the 'pull a lever, run to the opposite end of the level then find a key' formula. On the subject of switches, while I don't mind them being a little hard to find, the ones in this level seemed to be dressed in military-grade camouflage most of the time, which made it quite hard for me to find them. The rest of the objects in the level were well selected though, and are suitably placed (including some particularly cute cows). Another plus point in this level is the texturing, which despite it's lack of variation in colour scheme, is well applied and has few faults. On the other hand, the lighting throughout the level was pretty bland and monotone, and made many areas look quite grey. This also had a knock-on effect on the atmosphere too, making it a pretty depressing for a Christmas level, as grey lighting, brown texturing and a graveyard tends to give that effect. Thankfully, the fact that the town itself was detailed and believable enough managed to win me over once more, and brought my opinion of the general atmosphere back up again. While this isn't the best thing to play if you're looking for happy and joyful Christmas spirit, it's a good level nonetheless that should be given a go." - Spike (05-Dec-2007)
"Spend a stress-free raid in this deserted village - the only inhabitants I met were the cows! The puzzles were good; not to easy, not too hard, just enough to get you thinking. The 3 secrets were nicely hidden. There was also some lovely Chrismassy objects {but there could have been more! ;) } The falling snow really added to the holiday feeling, as did the end flyby music. It was wonderful to hear the bells ring out once Lara returned them to their rightful places." - Kitkat (04-Dec-2007)
"This is a perfect game ! The atmosphere of this little village is wonderful. You will be searching for levers and keys to advance up to the Belfry, having secured the missing bells. Keep your eyes open because the levers are very well hidden (there's another builder very near and dear to me who likes to do that !). I discovered some adorable cows who had quite a conversation with Lara - never saw them used before - what a sweet touch ! You will love this one !" - Mugs (03-Dec-2007)
"This is a superb xmas level, the atmosphere with the falling snow and the lighting is brilliant, also the choice of music to accompany the closing flyby is excellent. The puzzles are well done and not too difficult, although one in particular did have me stuck and asking for help. The custom objects are very well made including some cows. The texturing is very well done with only a couple of badly rotated texture segments. Overall I really enjoyed this almost 2 hour adventure and found 3 secrets." - Bedazzled (03-Dec-2007)
"Very nice Christmas level set in an English village where four bells are missing from the belfry and, of course, Lara's quest will be to find and place them so the villagers can have their Christmas after all. To do so, Lara will have to search for well hidden levers, a couple of keys, a Christmas cake and use a torch in more than one place. I liked the cows stable where the cows went "mooo!"! Perfect for the season." - Jorge22 (03-Dec-2007)
"The second outing of this year's Advent Calendar has you running through a snow covered town that's deviously designed to get you lost, but once you find all switches and the two keys, you can freely explore the entire city as you see fit. Along the way you'll find a torch and a few puzzles are related to that. The atmosphere is gripping even though the city doesn't look as happy as you'd expect it, but it's still a good play. After collecting the four bells and using it on the tower, you get to hear Jingle Bells as you're taken on a quick flyby through the town. Happy holidays! 40 minutes, 3 secrets. 12/07" - Treeble (03-Dec-2007)
"Cute, little confused level like slow puzzle and no too bright. Sometime need to use flares and sometime fired branch. Flower for cake was nice too, when looked for third and fourth golden bells. Vilage is very nice made it and only thinking will be big enough to play few hours. After more than 5 times returning to start position and who know how many circles in village run, finnaly foud all four bells and tut in highest area of church building. Easy for me because some lever are was very near to same gate for opening or little far. Frozen pool and few birds near and idilic winter trees made very nice atmoshphere for playing." - Ivan (03-Dec-2007)
"What a delightful Christmas level. Atmosphere, texture & lighting were wonderful. The village was deserted due to the Grinch that stole the bells. The cows gave me a warm welcome. Very well hidden switches extended the gameplay. Loved the ending music. Would have loved to see the residents of this quaint village appear after the Christmas bells had been placed in the belfry. You will enjoy this one." - guss18 (03-Dec-2007)
"Another beautiful Christmas level and another great game. This time Lara's looking for the missing bells of the bell tower. I must say that I've loved the charm and the atmosphere of the different places in the village. The bells are very well placed along the game and the first one you see is almost the last you get: it's a good detail. The puzzles are basically pull switches and find the door that opens and also few things to lit with the torch. Great textures and lighting and good camera work. I found only three secrets of four in 1 hr 10 min. Very good." - Loupar (02-Dec-2007)
