Reviewer's comments
"Simply one of the best TR5 test levels out there, though it doesn't say much about its quality. An interesting mix of Deepsea Dive and Old Mill (3 SEA HAGS..? Whoa). 5(!) secrets, no end level trigger. What really annoyed me much is the inconsistency of the collision detection: it can make Lara phases through a wall, but sometimes it also can make Lara hard to pass another object even though she doesn't directly collide with said object." - Charles Kane (06-Feb-2021)
"As far as ‘test levels’ go, this fares quite alright, providing as it does more gameplay than some levels that come without either the ‘test’ or even the ‘demo’ tag. Even so, the gameplay elements it contains are rudimentary and contrived, and the level’s main attraction is clearly its unusual setting, rarely seen (if at all) in custom levels. I was happy enough that the numerous sea hags—who have adapted to a marine environment since last seen in an Irish lake—seem to be confined to specific areas, so you won’t get crowded by half a dozen of them; and that they are rather inefficient foes, thankfully unable to puncture the diving suit. Still, except in certain undistinguished areas which appear to be safe for some reason, their presence forces you to keep continually on the move while you explore an adequately rendered, fairly cramped suite of rooms in a shipwreck for secret ‘golden roses’ and the odd medipack." - Mulf (20-Oct-2019)
"Some effort was put into a very short swimming-based level, especially in the texturing. Gameplay was OK, I mean it was a hunt-for-the-golden-roses-aka-typical-secret-of-TRC, and nothing else. Enemies were quite annoying, shame we couldn't kill them! Wolfy Regards." - Wolf7 (06-Mar-2019)
"A test level that shows some true improvement compared to the previous test level releases. The environment in this is magnificent and beautiful. The whole level is nothing but searching for 5 hidden golden roses in a diving suit. There are some of those demonic enemies from Tomb Raider 5, that chase you through the level. As Lara has infinite air, you don't have to emerge from the water. What I experienced here was a short secret search, but still exciting. A full version of this would be cool." - Nuri (16-May-2018)
"Lara can spend around 5 minutes scouring the ocean depths for quite a few golden rose secrets while avoiding some sea hags in a quite well made setting. Again, it's not very long, but I do think that more effort has been put into this one and it was a blast from the past seeing Lara's diving suit again." - Ryan (01-Apr-2018)
"Enjoyable this demo, but only that: a demo and very short. The environments are nice and well ornated, but the rooms and the openings are too small and sometimes Lara got problems to swim from room to room. No musics or camera shots, the texturization was the best feature. Anyway, nice to remember the time, many years ago, when I was playing the TR5 game with Lara using her diving suite." - Jose (15-Jun-2017)
"The level looks good with the applied textures and the place where Lara is trapped. She's with her diving suit, so she can't drown while we explore the underwater cave along with her 'mermaid friends' or whatever those things are. You have to look for an amount of golden roses, avoid the creatures and the fire. Yes, there's fire underwater and Lara can catch it! I found a bit of fun in this one." - alan (19-Nov-2016)
"A very short yet rather enjoyable level where we search for five roses in a sunken shipwreck. Except from the secret chime, just the default underwater ambience is used but it's enough to well capture the feeling of being trapped deep down beneath. We can collide with many objects scattered around which make the quest a bit tricky but also the environment gets quite pretty because of them. The unofficial editor also provides unusual diagonal vertical walls to differ the geometry more than the official trle allows. All the time we need to evade some hags which are quite helpless and harmless. We can't eventually get rid of them so after everything is collected we can let them beat Lara to death because the game has no regular finish. SUMMARY: Five minutes of fun." - DJ Full (17-Aug-2015)
"This is probably the most exciting concept among the TRC test levels as it's built upon the Deep Sea Dive level in the original game. Ie you get the diving suit and no worries to explore underwater depths. The quest for the five golden roses is a brief one, but it also raises an important note about this type of level - it just probably wouldn't hold well on its own. Still, an interesting concept and somewhat engaging hunt. This is a test level so not really much to see or do here otherwise, pretty much only for the completionists. 09/14" - Treeble (26-Sep-2014)
"Probably the most interesting of the test levels available to play(in terms of TR5 custom releases), this one has you utilizing the diving suit from the 'Deepsea Dive' level in the main game, as you search a wreaked ship for secrets(all the while doing your best trying to avoid the deadly sea hags) and that's pretty much it. Speaking from the perspective of a reviewer who plays a lot of TRLE custom levels, I'd love to see the diving suit mechanics utilized in a TRNG-built release someday(among certain other features from past TR games), but since it hasn't been implemented(at time of writing), I suppose it's practically just a dream at this point. Either way, much like other test levels, it's only really worth checking out to see how certain features work and not for those who are going in expecting a full-on adventure." - Ceamonks890 (12-Jul-2014)
"I liked the original Deepsea Dive level much, and this time it was OK, too, but there were many collision (or no collision, as you take it) problems: It is possible to swim through several walls; and sometimes not possible to swim through bare space. But finding the secrets is nice, the sea hags looked good. Interesting level." - manarch2 (20-Nov-2010)
"I liked this short level very much. Yes, I could image it as a part of a bigger levelset. We have to find 5 secrets, and we don't have to bother about oxygen, because we have diving-suit. Unfortunately the final trigger is missing, so if you finished, and bored on the wich, exit from the adventure." - Obig (25-May-2010)
"Brief but effective. Lara is in a deep sea diving suit, in black and murky water, with only her bright headlamp to illuminate what is in front of her. For once I think the blackness is dramatic, giving a real sense of deep waters. A swarm of Sea Hags torment her, and they have never seemed more evil. Atmospheric, and creates panic to get out of there. Found all five golden roses, though had to consult the walkthrough for the triangular opening and the crawlspace at the bottom that were very hard to find. Why does Lara catch fire underwater, while the Sea Hags aren't bothered? Most authors are working in TR4, and don't have the TR5 game engine at their disposal, so I don't know if this has been used in a game. It should be." - dmdibl (27-Dec-2009)
"That was an original Test level , even offering fun and a purpose to the player , which is hardly the case with test levels. Well made with good graphics. The idea would have greatly benefited to be part of a complete adventure series , so to have higher marks. Recommended." - eRIC (10-Dec-2009)
"A very short level, and the task is simple: Collect 5 golden roses. They're quite easy to find. But the enviroment is very pretty, and the lighting is used very well. The underwater feeling caught me while I was playing this level. Good test level, it's worth to try." - rtrger (28-Nov-2009)
"I didn't fancy this level in the original game either, but at least here you don't have to worry about making it back anywhere before you run out of breath. Lara stays in the diving suit throughout the entire level, but there's still a bunch of sea hags around to make your life miserable. This is nothing but a 5 minutes swim through submerged chambers, avoiding all the sea hags and finding 5 golden rose secrets. There's no end trigger, so basically once you've found the secrets you're done. Not the first level I'd recommend someone." - Selene (25-Oct-2009)
"There's really no gameplay at all, unless you count dodging sea-hags and picking up a few secrets as gameplay. However, the environments are very well put together and look quite convincing. It's a gimmick but it's worth a quick look." - Orbit Dream (23-Sep-2009)
"I rather enjoyed seeing Lara in her diving suit, but it proved surprisingly inefficient at warding off the damage caused by the sharp nails of several sea hags. The object of the demo is collecting golden roses and whilst it lasts it's not at all bad. It's a scenario we don't often see and I must confess I wouldn't at all mind a bit more. Brief but fun." - Jay (21-Sep-2009)
"Alright, this one was indeed different and thuis worth a look. Lara in her clunky diving suit looking for 5 secret roses while trying to not take too much damage from the unfriendly sea hags that roam the place and catching fire on occasion. Only 5 minutes, but still memorable." - MichaelP (20-Sep-2009)
"Your main task for the (test)level can best be described as evading sea hags and collecting 5 golden roses. Doesn't sound like a whole lot - but I probably liked it much better than the original level in that aspect. The looks are not that bad as well, if it wasn't for the fires underwater and the rather confined feel of the area it would even feel somewhat believable - as in not artificially constructed just as an area to play around. This certainly had some potential, so it's a pity that more was not done to give Lara a clear goal, something more to do and a definitive end, but if you're happy with just playing around in Lara's diving suit, then this will be keep you satisfied just fine." - eTux (12-Sep-2009)
