Reviewer's comments
"I'm not really sure what to think of this level. It feels like it could have a lot going for it, but ultimately it felt rather empty and flat as we run around and inside a number of different buildings which hold little to no interest. And then, of course, there's a massive maze at the end. Lighting doesn't help as it's much on the dark side and as Harry denoted on the walkthrough, no flare pickups are available. It's not pitch black dark, but it's quite tiring on the eyes. The real pity is that Lara's outfit is unique and quite good looking, but otherwise this didn't really hit the right notes for me. 20 minutes. 07/20" - Treeble (06-Jul-2020)
"This level is well builded, but now I can understand the reason why the low ratings. The fist area is very very dark, without flares to pick up and there are not cameras to show the triggered doors, even when the doors are far from the switch or even when the door is timed (unmarked ladder, aaaarg!). And the last part with the nasty maze... What to say about that? Is it funny for anybody run through a very huge maze with no hints only to pull some switches?. Fortunately there's a map attached to the walkthrough (thanks Harry). The best I found was, the texturization (when I could see the surfaces). Recommended only if you check the walkthrough." - Jose (18-Jan-2018)
"Tedious, incredibly tedious. This level has only received 10 reviews (11 with mine) in the 15 years since its release and it's not difficult to see why. A timed run up an unmarked ladder, countless amounts of wandering around, overdone darkness, and the fun part... an incredibly tedious maze that, I'll own up, I couldn't even be bothered to negotiate properly (although I do thank Michael for providing a map). Play at your own risk. This has been underreviewed...and for very good reason." - Ryan (12-Jun-2017)
"It's been nine years since anyone reviewed this level. The reason for that being very simple:it's absolutely bloody horrible! From the impenetrably dark and gloomy areas at the start;to the timed run up an unmarked climbable wall;the pushable section of wall that looks like all the other static pieces of wall;a complete absence of any camera hints to accompany the inumerable switches;and the huge and confusing maze for the 'fun' Finale. Even with the redoubtable Harry Laudie's Walkthrough to hand I still found this to be a confusing and unpleasent experience - I pity the poor soul who attempts this unaided. Nonetheless, the large Church is a well built and fairly atmospheric place;and with the right amount of camera clues, abbreviated maze and considerably brighter lighting this would have been an acceptable thirty minute level. Definately for completists ONLY." - Orbit Dream (12-Sep-2013)
"The beginning looks like dark city street with many breaking through rooms and shooting glass. Lots of work to glazier lol but not much things to do in these rooms. A hidden block in the church brings Lara to a big room. I found there the revolver and ammo but I was surprised only by a few soldiers one timed run and a long maze. Thanks for the map Michael." - Yoav (06-Jun-2004)
"Playing 3 very hard levels in a row I thought well why not this one. Little did I know a MAZE. Got lost completely and later found out that Michael made a nice map so played from that. You did save my sanity Michael thanks for that. The start is outdoors in a very gloomy (dark) atmosphere with little or no flares to be found (at least I didn't) and all windows you can shoot. Lots of empty rooms some big some small finding well-hidden levers. Don't ask what opened where as I still don't know. Had a hard time locating where I needed to do the timed run and that one was a bitch to do as well. Best room is the one where I found the shotgun as I am a sucker for big rooms. Found also the crossbow and laser sight and the Uzi. What does this level lacks well camera use some puzzles as you just run around from room to room with mostly nothing in it. And the only way to leave this game (as I like an intermission) is through Alt-F4 sloppy. 05-02-2003" - Gerty (16-Feb-2003)
"This is one level that I have no desire to replay in fact to review this level I was going to replay it because it had been a little while since I played it first but when after a few seconds I realised which one it was I just exited out of it straight away. You may think then that I would be vague on it for this review but let me tell you I will never forget this one timed run which nearly drove me crazy or that library maze that actually succeeded in driving my mind over that brink to Insanetown! Maybe some people may find this atmospheric and fun but it just didn't click with me and I would just as soon let it fade into a distant painful memory." - Sash (12-Dec-2002)
"Although I did enjoy the library maze and the few rooms that were brightly lit and well decorated I have to wonder what the author was thinking when he made a very dark level with no flares and put in an incredibly hard timed door where you have to run around in the dark areas and find a door before it closes. Actually there's quite a bit of running around as there are at least four switches and no camera work to show you what they opened. I'm not sure what the building was either - it was a large outdoor area (no roof) that had various small buildings that were like the rooms of a house - there was a library a dining room and quite a few bedrooms to be found which made me wonder what was going on there - looks very interesting. Thanks to the wonderful map that Michael added to his review the library maze was completely enjoyable though the level ended suddenly when I got to the armor." - RaiderGirl (26-Nov-2002)
"I have to say I feel dizzy after this level. What a nightmare! Apart from the fact that it is black dark and I mean it you can't see a thing there is a horrible timed run and a more horrible maze. There are no puzzles only switches to pull huge rooms indoors and outdoors with only library textures and objects and a movable block. If you make the mistake and drop into the opening in the area you find the revolver before opening a door down there you are trapped you can't get up again I also found a crossbow. Some SAS guards absolutely no flares I had to add some with the savegame editor after hours of frustration and struggling to find my way by shooting with the pistols all the time. I would never recommend this level only if you are a sucker for mazes almost impossible timed runs and you have practised to walk around blind folded." - Kristina (07-Nov-2002)
"Actually a few interesting aspects here like the nice outfit an impressive cathedral several objects nicely used and plenty of windows to shoot. Enemies are only a few SAS and on the downside many of the rooms are rather empty and useless and after a few jump switches all you get is a tight timed run a well hidden movable block and a tedious library maze where the keep the hand on the right wall does not work. Very annoying indeed. For those who hate mazes as much as I do - here is a map: http://www.mprager.de/goldarmor2maze.htm" - Michael (16-Sep-2002)
"Set at night in a great custom made outfit you find yourself outside with purple sky above moving furiously above and the sound of thunder. You start off going in and out of buildings trying to find something to do some of these buildings have no purpose and have no objects in them other rooms were like libraries churches and bedrooms. After a while you find switches and levers to pull some open doors and some I have no idea what it opened as there are no camera views to give any clues as to where you progress and taking in the great amount of area and inside of buildings there is this is very annoying. There is a very tricky timed run to do which allows no fault at all it took me ages to figure out where this timed door was and took about 4/5 tries to get through it. A bug I noticed was the water tanks in one of the room you could go straight through it and get stuck. There is a variety of textures used and there are a lot of house objects used the lighting in some places were good but some of the time I had to light a flare because it was so dark. There are a few pushable blocks to push around and a library maze at the end which is massive an it holds a very tedious pull levers find open doors puzzle all I can say was thank god they weren't timed. The level ends when you find the breastplate. Overall the gameplay wasn't good it was very tedious and annoying at times cameras need to be used and more or better puzzles and traps were desperately needed. In terms of atmosphere sound textures and lighting it was very good and obviously lot of work went into that but I think this level would be very hard to find enjoyable." - John (14-Sep-2002)
"I`m sorry to say but I find this gameplay a bit boring. Lots of running looking everywhere several times since you don't have a clue what happens when you pull a lever. The surroundings are of various quality - the cathedral and the fountain looks good (the sauna was fun) but the rest is mostly average. Lots of rooms with nothing to do. You can get up on the roof but I didn't find anything there. The enemies are SAS guards. One timed run set so precisely that I couldn't manage it without help. One loooong run in a library maze - find four switches to open four doors makes this maze simply frustrating since you have to run around many times if you follow the 'one hand in the wall' principle as I do. And then suddenly behind the last door is the 'Gold armor' and the level ends." - G.Croft (13-Sep-2002)
"Where was the walkthrough wall I wonder cause you get almost anything else you deeply loath in a custom level. Jump switches where you have no idea what they cause (still don't know) climbable walls that are not discernible as such a pushable block that blends in well with the rest many rooms that have no purpose whatsoever and a really annoying maze at the end. I started this in the middle of the night and though this is quite dark (with no flares provided) I kinda liked the atmosphere and when I bumped into the first SAS guard I nearly freaked out. Thing is all the enemies come straight from the circus and hop around on one leg. Most hilarious and very spooky at the same time. The Gold Armor part one was amongst the very first levels I reviewed and though that certainly has its flaws it is so much better than this boring and pointless exercise. I like the timed run though and the cathedral was very impressive." - Dimpfelmoser (11-Sep-2002)
