Reviewer's comments
"As far as debuts go, I've definitely seen worse than this but despite its relatively short length, it was a bit of an ordeal to go through. The gameplay flow is simple, linear and primarily suited for beginners and the tasks required to obtain four Black Beetles aren't very involving, but what really spoils it is the sequence where you have to use a monkeyswing and climb up a tall room to use four jumpswitches. The problem is that you have to keep going up every time you use one, which gets tedious really quick. There's also a stuck point if you use the switch that opens the exit before using the others, the door will close when you go back up again, which happened to me. Apart from those, there's a nice return of the Golden Lara statue which gets attacked by a harpy and a fight against a demigod, but that pretty much sums it up. Underwhelming." - Ryan (11-Nov-2018)
"Level that can be completed very quickly, since the author has poorly programmed the pyramid and only 1 beetle is needed to take the mechanical scarab. And avoid these long trips back to take the other 3. The demi god is also useless because we can avoid it and go to the exit." - Drakan (10-Nov-2018)
"A sort of short level if it wasn't for the tedious climbing to pull the 4 jump switches. The objective is to find the 4 beetles to place them in the pyramid, to get a key and insert it to the mechanical beetle, so you can use it to deactivate the spike traps. There are two harpies to kill and a demigod at the end. Lara takes with her some broken glasses." - alan (23-Jan-2018)
"Not a bad debut, but force the players to do that very looooong monkeyswing and repeat all the same movements at least four times was very very tedious and boring. And beware, 'cause if you choose the wrong order and let to the end the jumpswitch which opens the door in the skeletons platform you are forced to do that nasty path a fifth time! You also can drop to the pit in the room near the tile where you use the scarab, losing a lot of health, of course, but you never can go up. So that nasty path with the monkeyswing is the only task you can enjoy in this level 'cause once you used the scarab three times the level ends (not worth to shoot the demigod)." - Jose (15-Nov-2017)
"A rather easy and straightforward level with not much to do but to gather four black beetles to get the mechanical scarab and end the level. The part of the monkeyswing was quite tedious and boring. This is just a level to play once and forget it." - Gonxii (15-Nov-2015)
"This is a fairly classic example of a debut level, with the usual hallmark faults, but it's far from the worst example I've seen. Gameplay-wise, it's simple and readily achievable, the low point being an extended four jump switch exercise in tedium and the high point being seeing Lara's double being attacked by the harpy again (long time no see). Apart from collecting four beetles, there's not a great deal more to it." - Jay (30-Sep-2015)
"Pretty much your standard Egyptian debut level in terms of overall quality, with huge boxy rooms, flat lighting, generally poor texturing and unnecessarily drawn-out gameplay segments not really leading to a good lasting impression. Enemies and objects fit the surroundings about as effectively as always, but than again, that isn't much of an accomplishment in itself(eight year old builder or not.) So in conclusion, not recommended." - Ceamonks890 (02-Jul-2015)
"The level has become quite proper recalling of the fact which is it a first work and the level builder should have been only 8. Whereby I must also say immediately, that the level is only partly proper. I don't like the big hall with the double Lara. This hall was too big and too empty. The job was to bring a long Monkeyswing behind itself, then further upwards and over two footbridges completely upwards. There were four Jumpswitches. That is, that one had to make this too long way upwards four times. And if one is unlucky, one uses the Jumpswitch for the closed door too early. Because the door closes again even if one jumps on the block to the Monkeyswing. Then this is a very irritating Dead-End. The only property is which appears only one harpy and nibbles at the double Lara. After the four Jumpswitches one can break four black beetles from the wall and apply them at the small black pyramid. There one finds the second part of the mechanical Beetle. And now one can slide to the level end. Opponents were a harpy, little beetles, two skeletons and a Demigod. All together it was too light and, nevertheless, the big hall looked very much after time drudgery. But the rest was quite proper." - Scottie (12-Jun-2009)
"This is a first level so you really can't expect much from it. It seemed like a shortened simplified version of the original Cleopatra's Palace where you search for the four beetles and you face Lara's Double and you also have to use the Mech Scarab to disarm deadly spikes. Not that this is bad especially since it's a first level but more imagination could have been thrown in here. However rumor spreads that Dominik was 8 when he built this level if so definitely it's a great work." - Treeble (11-Apr-2004)
"I didn't like this level at all. There is nothing worthwhile in it the texturing isn't very good the lighting isn't good and you have to do the exact same thing four times to pull four levers. Well you're meant to do the exact same thing four times to pull four levers - I did it two times placed the beetle I got and got the Winding Key. Much easier and it made the level last ten minutes. There are two pits in the level and in both of them you survive when you fall down meaning that you can't get up (unless I missed a ladder). Nothing more to say actually. A short level which didn't get any better when you had to do the same boring thing four times." - Magnus (29-Jan-2004)
"If this was indeed built by an eight year old then I say it's an amazing level indeed. I'm not sure though because I can't read the read-me that comes with the download. Still it's an interesting level even though it's the same task we've done hundreds of times now - collecting the four beetles and the mechanical beetle to get over some spikes. Then you slide down meeting a demigod along the way that you can actually avoid and just keep sliding to the end." - RaiderGirl (20-Feb-2003)
"The level on itself is enjoyable if it weren't for that tedious monkey climb not once but four times. For the rest I thought this was rather a neat little level. Fighting some of the fiercest enemies not forgetting to outrun some beetles. Needing 4 beetles and the mechanical one you even find Von Croy's glasses. 22-12-2002" - Gerty (29-Dec-2002)
"I am guessing this is the first attempt. Short level and a little irritating. All you have to do is get the scroll then the crowbar and pry the four beetles to place in the pyramid. Only to get three of them it's needed to monkey swing four times. It was very annoying. The mechanical scarab comes next and after three sets of spikes you meet a demigod and the finishing trigger. A lot of thin walls and standard cleopal scenery resembling very much the original level with the four jump switches high up or was it two. Anyway not much but also not very bad." - Kristina (10-Dec-2002)
"Well I thought Dominik's 1st level was more than adequately done. 20 minutes or so to escape some beetles (you really only needed to pull one of those jump switches) locate the crowbar pry some beetles off kill a harpy knock a couple of skeletons off a ledge use the mechanical scarab and fight a demigod. Unfortunately 15 of those 20 minutes were performing a tedious monkey swing not once but 4 times." - Momster (03-Dec-2002)
"I thought it was really entertaining until I arrived at the four jump switches and it dawned on me that I was supposed to do the long monkeyswimg with subsequent crawl four times in a row. That really was a serious hamper on the gameplay. Otherwise it's a short and enjoyable cleo experience in a nice Egypt setting with the usual elements and enemies. Only in the big room the textures are a bit on the repetitive side while I thought the area you start out in was quite good." - Dimpfelmoser (01-Nov-2002)
"For an 8 year old this is a really quite astonishing work. Dare I presume he had a little parental help? Whatever the case may I suggest that in future Dominik gives a little more thought to gameplay; the same task undertaken four consecutive times is really far too tedious. Wafer thin walls and the dreaded Cleopal wad I can overlook but gameplay which makes you want to chuck the whole thing in should definitely be avoided." - Orbit Dream (27-Jul-2002)
"This is another level where you need to find four beetles that will finally give access to a mechanical beetle and usually I like these levels but this one had only one puzzle that needed to be completed 4 different times which was extremely monotonous because of a long monkey swing crawl and run. The only other thing to do was fight a handful of enemies and slide down a couple of ramps to end the level after 25 minutes. There were a couple of nice aspects to the look of the level like a suspended platform and the starting area but that one puzzle was so boring that it detracted from anything worthwhile." - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"Considering Dominik's age this is a nice application of the Cleopal WAD objects and puzzles. Unfortunately about half the time you spend in this level is monkey swinging again and again the same route which indeed leads to a severe temptation to use the fly cheat." - Michael (21-Jun-2002)
"If it is true that Dominik is only 8 years old then the rating should be higher but I am not sure. The level is a bit messy. Too many different textures brought together. The lighting is ok. And then 4 times the same distance (long distance) for 4 levers. It was a 30 minutes play...without the 4 levers about 15 minutes." - Henk (21-Jun-2002)
"Here we have a young author who comes with his own ideas of gameplay some ideas are good and some are a little less good. The level is overall rather entertaining with some good jumps a scroll and 3 black beetles to find to be able to use the mechanical scarab and slide down to fight the guardian. Before that Lara has met some skeletons harpies little beetles and her golden copy in those places rather well textured with some thin walls though. There is no great use of lighting but the camera work is good and there are some new sounds." - eRIC (21-Jun-2002)
