Walkthrough by Harry Laudie
1. The game executable file is called Play.exe and not tomb4.exe.
2. There is an essential new move that the author does not mention. First, grab a crevice. Then tap the DOWN ARROW and RIGHT ARROW at the same time. Lara should jump up and grab a higher ledge.
3. This level is very dark. The flares are red. This is the worst possible color to use in dark places. Use the light from the binoculars to look around.
Level 1: Document Display
The game starts with showing you a document outlining the story.
Level 2: Temple of Swords
You get a flyby of a cave and ends with Lara standing behind a closed gate. Turn around and face the south-east. You can see a wall of wooden grates. Pick up the flares off the ground. Shoot the lower grate in the east wall. Jump up and shoot the top grate as well. Go into the tunnel and go south. Turn the wheel about six times. Roll and run out of the tunnel. Run through the open gate before the gate closes. I found it useful to run to the gate and roll. You most often end up on the other side of the gate if the gate has not closed too much. You enter the cave from the opening flyby.
Hop onto the north-west block. Jump onto a higher block to the east. Stand jump to the south to grab and pull up onto a column. Ignore the ladder above your head. It is for later. Run and jump north to grab a ledge. Pull up and slide down.
You will stop in front of a lava trench. Run and jump over the lava trench. Jump down to the floor and notice a block at the north wall. To the south opposite that block is a hard-to-see wall switch on a rock. Pull down the wall switch and hop onto the south-west ledge. Jump into the open gate in the west wall and stop. Run into an alcove when the spikes drop. Run and out and loop around to the left into another alcove. The side wall spikes are not fatal. Pull down a jump switch on the east wall. Exit and run west into the corner. Pull down a wall switch on the south wall. You get a cut scene of a gate opening.
Get back through the spikes to the entrance. Run and jump south-east to a flat tile. Stand jump south-east to another tile. Stand jump south-west to another tile. Finally stand jump south-west to enter the open gate. Run and jump to the west to land on a rock. Hop south-west onto a block and push open the double doors. You enter a tunnel with breakable tiles and spike traps. Run on the first breakable tile. Stand jump south-east onto another breakable tile. Jump up and grab the ceiling. Monkey swing south over the spike traps. Pull down the wall switch in the south wall. You can see the spikes trigger beside you. Exit the room by running over the corners of the lava pits. The ceiling is too low to jump over them.
Run and jump east over the lava again. Enter the cave and go north. Jump over the lava trench again. Go north and notice that the block has dropped. Follow the tunnel and go east. Pick up flares from a wall crevice. Face north and push the box to the north as far as possible. Turn left and push another box once. You enter another small tunnel. To the west is a timed wall switch for later. Go north and follow the tunnel to a large dark room.
Go north-east and pull down a wall switch on the west wall of the north-east alcove. You may hear a gate open. Go west and climb the wall ladder. Pull up onto a ledge. Jump east onto an arch. Go to the middle and pull down two wall switches. Continue east onto a ledge. Run south and into a tunnel. Go west through four open gates and use the floor lever. You get a cut scene of the dark room below. There are two other wall switches on the north ledge corners. Do not use them. They close the gates in the tunnel. Safety drop to the floor. Go to the north-west alcove. The gates are open so shoot the gong at the back wall. Exit the room and go to the right side branch tunnel.
Crawl under the low ceiling. Save the game in front of a timed wall switch. Pull down the wall switch and get a cut scene of a gate opening. Hit the KEY PAD 0 key to stop it. Turn left and run to the wall. Crouch and crawl forward. Stand up and run and sprint back down the entrance tunnel. Turn right and stay near the left wall to avoid being stuck by the low ceiling. Then left through the entrance. Run south-east over the lower rocks and jump onto the south ledge. Jump through the open gate in the east wall before the gate closes. Push open the double doors and shoot the gong at the back wall.
Exit the room and run and jump to the middle of the south ledge. Stand jump to the south-west twice to land in front of the open gate again. Stand jump south over the edge to land on the floor below. You lose about half of your health. Climb the corner block again. Jump to the middle block. Get onto the high south column and climb the wall ladder above your head. Pull and go north through the two open gates. Use the floor lever and get a cut scene of a box dropping in the wall north of the lava trench. Climb down and jump north to grab the ledge again. Pull up and slide down. Jump over the lava trench. Go north-east and enter the alcove of the cut scene.
Crawl through a crawl space. Go right, left, and left to stand up. Pull down a jump switch. Continue crawling and go through the open doors. Continue down the tunnel into a very dark cave. There is a closed gate at the east wall. Loop around to the left and go to the west wall. Crawl under the north wall overhang into another section of cave. Go straight and pull up into a north wall crawl space. Drop into another section of cave. Go east and use the two floor levers in a middle trench. Go west into the open gate and pull down the wall switch. You get a cut scene of something that is too dark to actually see. Exit this area and return south to the first cave.
Go to the middle of the south wall and go through a crawl space into another cave. Go west and pull down a wall switch. There was a fire here if you came here earlier. You get another black cut scene. Return to the first cave. A block has risen near the entrance tunnel. Hop onto the block and just stand jump west to grab the upper ledge. Pull up and crawl forward until you can stand. Use the light from the binoculars and look at the floor to see torches on the floor. The red flares are really useless. Pick up a torch and slide down to the cave floor. Drop the torch where you can find it again. Go to the north-east corner and pull back a half-height block. Stand on the block and light the torch on the lit wall torch. Then light the low unlit wall torch to the left of the east wall gate. The gate opens.
Enter the tunnel and drop the torch near the closed gate in the north wall. Use the floor lever and go east through the open gate. Slide down to the base of a column. Pull up onto the column. Stand jump north to land on a ledge. Go west to the end. Climb down a north ladder and pick up red shotgun shells off a ledge. Climb up and pull up into a small room. Turn the wheel about six times. Go south outside the gate to pick up the lit torch. Use roll to get back into the room before the gate closes. Go east back onto the ledge. Go east until the ledge turns.
Go left and light a dark circle on the floor. Stand there as a sword drops behind you. Go south and stand jump to the middle ledge. Stand near the middle and stand jump to the south to another ledge. Go south-east and light another dark circle o the ledge. Wait for the sword to drop. Go north to the edge and face east. Take two steps back and stand jump to the north-east to land on another ledge. Go east and light the statue at the end. Wait until a sword drops behind you. Then quickly step back to avoid a fire emitter from the statue. Keep the lit torch. When it is safe, run and jump south of the statue and land in a tunnel. Go forward through the three open gates.
Go to the end turn to the left. Take the lit torch and walk into the water. You will float and start to paddle through the water. Turn the corner and continue to paddle. You start to find a slope so that you can walk. Walk to the end and light a wall torch. A trap door opens behind you. Drop the torch and turn around. Climb the west wall of the shaft above the trap door. Climb up and pull up into another large dark room.
Turn to your left and see a moveable pedestal on the ledge. Look around and see many closed gates. From the pedestal, go west and south to the wall. Pull out a moveable block from the west ledge. Pull the block north and place it in front of the pedestal. Push the pedestal to the north wall. You stop at a hole. Go to the north-west corner. Push in a moveable block to the north. Enter the alcove and pull down the wall switch on the east wall. Get out and go to the east side of the room. Enter the open gate in the middle of the east wall.
Use the floor lever and get a cut scene of the many traps. Carefully go east through the swinging blades, rolling wheels and spike bags. Go to the south-east corner and pick up the Golden Key from the floor. Carefully go back through the traps and exit this room. Loop around to the right and go to the north-east corner alcove. Use the key in the key lock. Now go west and enter the open gate in the middle of the west wall. Go west and find a moveable block between the second and third columns. Push it out and move it west between the third and fourth columns. Hop onto the block and pull down a wall switch. You get a cut scene of a trap door dropping open.
Go east to return to the room. Go left and drop into the open trap door. Follow the tunnel north and pull up to the east behind closed gates. Pull down a jump switch on the south wall. You get a cut scene of a block rising in the dark room. Slide down a slope to the north. Jump and grab a ledge. Pull up and slide down to a breakable tile. It breaks but the floor is safe. Jump to the east tunnel and climb up at the end. Do not go up the ramp yet. Turn around and climb a north wall ladder. At the top, shimmy to the right. Drop into an alcove for secret #1. Pick up a large medipack and a shotgun. Climb back to the tunnel. Go up the ramp and pull down another jump switch. You get a cut scene of a block rising in the dark room. Drop into an east hole. Crawl through the crawl space. Then pull up through a trap door back into the dark room.
Now push the pedestal north and east onto the fancy tile. You get a cut scene of gate opening in the room. Get down and go south through the open gates. Stay to the left side to avoid a rolling rock on the right side. Then continue up the right side sloped tunnel. Go north and pull down the wall switch to the left of the gate to open the gate. Step through the gate and the level ends.
Level 3: Chamber of Division
You start by dropping onto a slope and sliding down. Notice a crevice in the wall beside you. Drop down into a lower tunnel. Go east to a closed door. Press the big button and hear a trap door drop. Go back west to the crevice. Grab the crevice. This is an undocumented new move. Now tap the DOWN ARROW and RIGHT ARROW at the same time. Lara will jump up to grab a higher crawl space. Pull up into the crawl space. Crawl through and stand up. Press a big button and hear a trap door close. Crawl out and go over the closed trap door.
Ahead of you is another closed trap door. Turn to the right and pull down a ceiling trap door to open it. Jump up to grab a wall ladder on the east wall. Climb up and pull up into a small dark cave. Drop down to the left and push the button to open the trap doors. Stand at the edge and take one step forward. Hop back and use grab to glide onto the ledge below. From here you can safety drop to the floor. You lose about a third of your health. Go east through the open door.
The floor to the south is a spike trap. Grab the stripped wall to the left. Shimmy around the two corners to the right and release. Turn around and grab another stripped wall. Shimmy around the two corners to the right and release. Push the corner moveable block #1 twice to the south. Turn left and push a moveable block #2 once to the east. Push the third moveable block #3 to the right four times to the south. Go back and pull block #1 four times. Jump over the block and go into the west corner and pick up a crowbar. Go back and push the block #1 back into the corner. You may have noticed a key lock above the west wall. There is a closed trap door above the east wall block. Pull back block #3 to reveal a closed door. Use the crowbar to open that door.
Follow the tunnel a little ways and pick up flares. Walk forward and stop at a pit. Run and jump south with a right curve. You should land in an alcove on a rising block. A rock rolls behind you into the pit. Get down and jump over the pit. Jump into an upper west wall alcove. Pull down the wall switch and get down. Jump over the pit and enter a lower east wall alcove. Pull down the wall switch and get out. Stand jump south-west over the slide into another west wall alcove. Save the game. Pull down the wall switch and back flip onto the slope to avoid a falling rock. Jump over the pit and go north through the open door. Notice a closed trap door above your head.
Go north down the steps and save the game in front of a wall switch. Pull down the wall switch and side jump to the left through the timed gate. If you miss, a rolling rock crushes you against the wall switch. Follow the new tunnel to the end. Pull down a wall switch to open a door. Stand jump back onto the steps. Go south up the steps to the open trap door. Pull up into an upper north crawl space. Crawl and pick up a small medipack. Stand up and pick up the Catacombs Key from a shelf. Ceiling spikes poke at your health. Quickly crawl back and drop back near the steps.
Go west and hop onto the block. Use the key in the key lock and the trap door opens over the east block. Go there and pull up into an upper west tunnel. Go to the end and use the crowbar to open the door. Enter a tunnel and pass three closed doors. Turn the corner and use the crowbar to open the middle door of three closed doors. Enter the room and open the corner box for red shotgun shells. Use the floor lever and get a cut scene of a block dropping. Exit the room and go straight to enter the tunnel. Go to the edge of a lava pit. Run off the edge to the south-east and land on a safe block.
Turn around and stand jump into a west alcove. Pick up red shotgun shells. Pull down the wall switch and get a fast flyby of the room. Jump back to the safe block. Run and jump north-east to a safe block. Run and jump onto the raised column to the south-east. Pull up onto the balcony of the flyby. Pick up the hard-to-see Temple Key from the dark floor. Follow the tunnel and the gate opens as you approach. Jump over the water or dive in. Pull up on the other side and the second gate opens. Follow the tunnel to an open area with a central statue.
Go left and shoot two thugs. Hop onto the back south-west ledge and pick up a small medipack. Jump onto the central structure. Climb the stripped wall to the top. Pull back a skeleton and pick up blueshotgun shells. Get down to the ground. Go west into an alcove. Use the temple key to open the door. Sprint west to avoid three falling rocks. You enter a room with a shallow pool. Shoot the SAS who is wading in the pool.
Return through the tunnel to the first rolling rock. You can jump into the alcoves to get around the rocks. Get into that first rock alcove and pick up a large medipack for secret #2. Now return to the room with the pool. You can actually get this secret later but I needed the health.
Go north and use the binoculars to look to the upper west wall. You should see a closed trap door on the ceiling. Go to the south wall and get into the water between two blocks. Save the game for a timed run. Pull down the wall switch on the west block. Pull up onto the block and hop onto a raised block. Jump to grab the wall to the west. Shimmy around the corner, back flip, and roll to grab another wall. Shimmy around two corners, back flip, and roll to grab another wall. Shimmy around two corners and climb the wall and pull up through the open trap door. The trap closes behind you. If you are two slow, the trap door will close and you have to try again.
Go east and shoot the SAS on duty. Go to the middle of the north wall and pull out the left side moveable block twice. Go behind it and pull out a second moveable block. Jump behind it and push a large button. You get a cut scene of a closed door somewhere. Go to the south wall and pull out a moveable block. It is to the right of a column. Use the binoculars to see the block. Push the block aside to reveal a tunnel in the south wall. Go up the east steps. Use the floor lever and get a cut scene of a door opening. Go down the steps and into the south wall tunnel. Follow the tunnel to a large room. Run to the right to avoid a rolling rock. Go north and up the steps. You get a cut scene of a block dropping to reveal a switch. Notice a wall switch above the fire ahead of you.
Go down the steps and jump onto the east ledge. Use the crowbar to open the door in the east wall. You return to the room that you left by the tunnel. Go into the south-east corner. Jump over a ledge and crawl through a crawl space. Go to the right and find the switch from the cut scene. Pull down the wall switch and get a cut scene of the fire stopping at the top of the steps. Run back to that room and up the steps. Hop onto the ledge and pull down the wall switch. You can hear a trap door open and the camera view changes to above you.
Go back to the entrance slope where the rock rolled down. Stand jump up the right side. Jump to grab the north wall and climb the wall. Run over the bridge and open the small box to pick up the Catacombs Key. Hang from the left side of the ledge with the box. Do not get into the climbing position. Shimmy to the wall side may help. Tap the DOWN ARROW and RIGHT ARROW key at the same time. Lara should jump up to grab a wall above the open trap door. Climb the wall to the top. You enter another dark room and the trap door closes.
There are eight moveable blocks. The only useful block is the second from the left as you face the west wall. Move that block to reveal a wall switch. Pull down the wall switch and a door opens in the south-west corner. Go there and run and jump over the pit. Jump into the left corner, as you have to land on a slope. Slide down and jump at the end to grab a ledge. Pull up and jump north-east onto a ledge. Go east and slide down a slope backwards. Grab the edge and safety drop to the floor. Jump to grab the climbable east wall. Shimmy around two corners and climb down to the floor. Pull down the wall switch on the east wall. The fire has stopped. Run around to the west and open the small box to pick up the Mayan Idol Part 1. Return to the wall switch and pull up through the open gate. Go north through the crawl space. Continue to return to the room that you left earlier.
Go north-east to the left of the steps. Place the catacombs key in the east wall key lock to open the door. Enter and go east to the end of the passageway. Pull a skeleton cage back four times. Hop over the cage and go east. Enter the tunnel and go to the end. Pull a skeleton cage back five times. Hop over the cage and pull the cage back into the tunnel five times. Hop onto the cage and press the button on the upper west wall. Get down and follow the tunnel to an open door. You are above a room where you started much earlier.
Jump at an angle to grab the west ledge. Shimmy to the left and pull up. Run around to the south ledge and use the floor lever. You get a cut scene of a door opening in the room below you. Just run off the ledge to the north and land on a structure with the skeleton. You were here before to get ammo. Safety drop down to the ground. You can go west to get the secret if you did not get it earlier.
Go south through the open door and jump over the deadly water. Shoot two thugs and two SAS. You can look around the platform and see some moveable items on fire tiles. There is also fire on the platform at the top of the steps. You can also see two floor levers and buttons behind the statues.
Go west to pull up onto a block. Jump up to grab a crevice in the north column. Shimmy around the comer to the left. Tap the DOWN AROW and RIGHT ARROW at the same time. Lara should jump up and grab a higher ledge. Pull up into the alcove. Open the small box to pick up Mayan Idol Part 2. Safety drop to grab the crevice and shimmy to the right. Drop on the column and safety drop to the floor.
Jump behind the idols near the steps and press the small red button. You get a cut scene of the platform and the corner fires are stopped. Start with the east side of the platform. Go to the north edge. Pull back a pedestal with an egg seven times onto a same tile design. You get a cut scene of water near a closed door. Move the identical pedestal and egg on the east side to its location on a same tile design. You get a cut scene of the door opening near the water.
Move the south-east corner urn onto the dark tile north of a design tile. That is: four north and one east. Move the north-east urn behind it. That is: four south and one west. The gate should open in the south wall. Go there ands press a button. You get a cut scene of the fires stopping on the platform.
I had trouble with moving the west side corner urns. Move the north-west corner urn onto the dark tile north of a design tile. That is: five south and two east. Move the south-west urn behind it. That is: five north and two east. The gate should open in the south wall. Go there ands press a button. You get a cut scene of spikes popping up on the platform.
You have a choice:
Choice 1: Go up the steps and stand at the right edge. Stand jump at an angle onto the center of the platform at the top of the steps. Back flip back onto the floor to avoid two falling rocks. Go up the steps and jump into the open alcove. Pick up the item to end the level.
Choice 2: Continue the level.
Use the two floor levers and get a cut scene of a door opening near water. Go north to return to the previous room. Go east and enter the open door. Run through the water and drop at the end. Swim left and pull open an underwater door. Follow the underwater tunnel to the end and pull down an underwater lever. You get a cut scene of fire stopping at a receptacle. Swim back and pull up. Jump over the water and into another tunnel. Run to the end and find the receptacle. Combine the Mayan Idol pieces and place the idol in the receptacle. You get a cut scene of rocks dropping at the top of the steps. Exit west and then south to return to the previous room. Go up the steps and jump onto the platform. The gate opens in the south wall. Jump into the open alcove to pick up the item to end the level.
Level 4: Document Display
You get another document thanking the user for playing and the game ends.
