Curse of the Scarab - Part 1

2 Secrets, 19 Kills.

 

The level begins in a torch-lit room with 2 large doors leading to the labyrinth.  Before you go anywhere pick up the flares and the large med kit on the ledges at the sides of the room.  Next walk towards the doors and they will open for you.  Go into the next room where you find 4 large vases.  Shoot them open and pick up a small med kit, some uzi ammo and some more flares.  The 4th vase contains a small scorpion which you should kill.

 

Once you have dispatched the scorpion, climb up into the dark side room and light a flare.  Pick up the six shooter ammo and the uzi ammo hidden in the corners.  Return to the previous room and pass through the next set of double doors to enter a domed room with four ornate columns in the corners.  Climb up onto the platform in the centre of the room and pick up the small med kit on it.  As soon as you step onto the platform two things will happen.  First, a camera will show you an aerial view of the platform and secondly a ninja will enter the room.  Make sure that you pick up the med kit before the ninja gets there or he will steal it.  Kill the ninja and open the next set of double doors.

 

DON’T run up the sloped hallway because 2 large spiked balls will roll down the hallway and crush you.  Instead jump backwards up the slope until the ground starts to shake and then sprint back into the previous room and get clear of the spiked balls.  Next go up the sloped hallway to the ledge overlooking the pool.  Turn around, jump backwards and grab the edge of the ledge you were standing on.  Sidle right until you reach a ladder.  Climb up it as far as you can go, then sidle to the left and drop down onto another ledge.  Walk to the centre of the ledge and jump up and grab the monkey bars.  Monkey swing over to the altar and pick up the Eye Piece from the altar.  This will trigger a camera that will show you a door opening in the pool below.

 

Next, you must get down to the bottom of the pool room.  To do this in perfect safety you can use the ladders at the side of the room.  However, if you are in a hurry just do a swan dive into the pool.  Pick up the uzis at the bottom of the ladder and the explosive crossbow ammo from the bottom of the pool.  Swim through the open door and down the underwater passage until you surface in the scorpion room.

 

Climb out and shoot the five scorpions that you see.  Feel free to use the uzis you just picked up.  Go to the far corner of the room and find a pole.  Slide down that pole and walk into the secret room.  Dispatch the other five scorpions that attack you and pick up the six shooter from the spotlight in the centre of the room.  This is the first SECRET.  Retrace your steps to the scorpion room and pull the lever in the corner of the room.  This opens the door behind you.  Kill the scorpion creeping up behind you and go through the open door.

 

Pick up the crossbow lying on the floor and arm yourself with the explosive crossbow ammo that you picked up from the pool room.  Walk into the catacombs and shoot the mummy that attacks you.  Go into the hallway that the mummy came from and pick up a large med kit.  The fixed camera makes navigating around the room difficult.  Next, go to the hallway on the far side of the room and kill the other mummy and pick up the flares.  Exit the catacombs into the main room.

 

Work your way around the perimeter of the room in a clockwise direction.  First, light a flare, turn left and climb over the ledges in the dark corner of the room.  Jump to the ledge with the flares and pick them up. 

 

Next, work your way around the side of the room until you come to the fire pit.  DON’T walk to the edge of the fire pit or you will walk straight into the flames.  Jump over the fire pit, pick up the large med kit and jump back.  Be careful that you don’t hit you head on the low roof.

 

Go to the opposite side of the room and pull the lever you find there.  It will open the portcullis behind you.  The lever is also booby-trapped so after you pull it; a large spiked ball will fall from the ceiling and crush you unless you jump backwards quickly.  Shoot open the vase and pick up the large med kit.  Kill the ninja that comes up behind you.

 

Next go up the stairs to your left, light a flare and crawl through the crawl space until you come to a long tunnel.  Being careful not to fall over the edge of the ledge, walk down to the far end of the tunnel.  On the way, pick up the shotgun ammo halfway down the tunnel.  Jump down to the stairs which have now risen to a height that you can safely reach.  Light a flare and walk down the stairs until you come to the shotgun at the bottom of the stairs. 

 

Pick up the shotgun.  This is the second SECRET.  A ninja will run down the stairs behind you.  Dispatch him with the shotgun.  Retrace your steps back up the stairs and through the crawlspace and back into the main room.

 

Go to the statue behind the sarcophagus.  Pull the statue away from the ladder behind it.  Climb up the ladder into the room above.  Kill the 2 mummies there with your explosive crossbow ammo and pick up the small med kit on the nearby ledge.  Being careful not to fall down the holes in the floor, go to the altar and pick up the other Eye Piece.  Combine this Eye Piece with the one you picked up earlier to form the Eye of Horus.

 

Climb back down the ladder and cross to the closed portal.  Place the Eye of Horus in the recess and the portal will open to reveal a tunnel.  WALK down the tunnel and jump over the pit filled with spikes.  Go through the portcullis that opens in front of you to finish the level.

 


Curse of the Scarab – Part 2

1 Secret, 32 Kills.

 

Level 2 begins exactly where level 1 left off.  Lara is standing in a tunnel with a closed portcullis directly behind her.  If you look back through the bars you can see the final rooms of level 1.  In front of Lara is a pole sticking out of a hole in the floor.  Jump over the hole and pick up the six-shooter.  Next, turn around, jump onto the pole and slide down to the bottom of the pit.  Take out the six-shooter that you just picked up and kill the ninja that attacks you.  Pick up the uzi lying underneath the torch and follow the corridor into the next room.

 

Your objective in this room is to use the pillars to cross from one side of the room to the other side.  It LOOKS simple but it is actually very challenging.  Turn left and use a running jump to jump to the pillar up against the wall.  Grab it with your hands and pull yourself up.  Jump to the second pillar with another running jump.  Darts will shoot out of the walls from both sides of the room at this point.  Ignore the darts and take a third running jump to the third pillar.  More pesky darts will come out of the walls, but you should walk Lara to the edge of the pillar and use a normal jump to reach the platform in the centre of the room.

 

Pick up the grenade gun and walk to the far side of the platform.  Use a normal forward jump to grab the edge of the next pillar and then pull yourself up.  Walk through more darts to the edge of the pillar and than make another normal jump to the next pillar.  If you use a running jump you will overshoot it.  Avoid the darts and make a running jump to the final pillar, turn left and then make one last running jump to the torch-lit platform.  Grab the edge of the platform, pull yourself up and take out your grenade gun.  Use it to kill the ninja that attacks you.

 

Pick up the shotgun that the ninja drops.  If you follow the corridor you will find it ends at another portcullis.  To open this door you need to find the lever.  First backtrack to the torch-lit platform where you just killed the ninja.  Do a safety-drop off the right side and climb down the ladder to the floor of the pillar room.  Pick up the large med kit in the corner and kill the 2 scorpions that attack you.  Cross to the far side of the room and jump into the hole in the floor.

 

Run down the hallway to the Lever Room.  Shoot the 2 mummies that jump out on you with your grenade gun.  Pick up the small med kit and the flares.  Pull the lever and a camera will show you the door that you saw earlier opening.  Return to the pillar room and kill another 2 scorpions.  Retrace your steps to the portcullis and slide down the hallway behind it.


Walk into the main room and watch the triggered camera sequence to get a quick tour of the main room.  Your objective is to find a way to open the two large double doors at the end of the camera sequence.  First run to the large altar in the centre of the room and shoot open the 4 vases standing there.  Pick up the six-shooter ammo, the uzi ammo and the normal and wideshot shotgun ammo.  If you leave the uzi ammo lying there ninjas will steal it.

 

DON’T step onto the gold scarab tile in the middle of the altar.  Save this for later.  Instead go down the side alley on the left and shoot open the 2 vases standing there.  Pick up the large and small med kits quickly.  A ninja will come around the corner and try to steal the small med kit.  Kill the ninja and cross to the alley on the opposite side of the room.  Shoot open the 2 vases standing there and pick up the large and small med kits.  Kill the ninja that appears.

 

Go back to the main room, turn right and walk through the open doorway in front of the two large double doors.  Next go to the palm trees on your left and jump into the waterhole.  Swim down an underwater passage to a small square room and pick up the super grenade ammo lying on the floor.  This is the only SECRET in this level.  Next, swim down the underwater passage on the other side of the room.  Pull yourself out of another waterhole and kill the 2 ninjas shooting at you.

 

Return to the altar room and step onto the golden scarab symbol from the NORTH side of the room (the side you originally entered the room from).  A camera will show you an aerial view of the altar and the portcullis on your left will open.  Four ninjas will run through the door you just opened one by one.  WAIT until all 4 ninjas are out and then use your grenade gun to kill the whole group with one shot.

 

Enter the room the 4 ninjas emerged from and pull the lever in that room.  This will open another portcullis in the main room and release another 4 ninjas.  A camera will also be triggered to show you exactly which door you just opened (this will happen with all the levers).  Run back into the main room and have an old-fashioned shoot-em-up with the 4 ninjas.  Once you have killed them all, run into the room they came out of and pull the next lever.  This will open the portcullis directly opposite you and release 4 more ninjas.  As they are much closer this time, the ninjas will reach you much sooner than before.  Kill them, run into the next room and pull the next lever.  The triggered camera will show you the portcullis back near the large altar opening and another 4 ninjas emerging.  Kill them and run into the room they came from. 

 

Climb up the ladder in that room until you emerge on the roof.  Ignore the ninja on the opposite rooftop.  He is only there to distract you while a 2nd ninja sneaks up behind you.  Turn around and shoot the ninja behind you and then shoot the ninja on the other rooftop.  Next do a running jump over the alleyway to the next rooftop.  Jump up and grab the monkey bars on the ceiling and monkey swing across to the third rooftop.  Kill the 2 ninjas that jump out on you.


Do a running jump over the alleyway to the 4th rooftop and walk onto the golden scarab symbol on the floor.  This will trigger a flying camera sequence that shows you the two large double doors opening.  Step off the golden scarab symbol and onto the white rocks and you will slide down to the floor.  Run to the double doors and jump backwards up the sloped hallway.  When the ground starts to shake, sprint back into the previous room and get clear of the spiked balls rolling down the sloped hallway.

 

Run up the sloped hallway until you reach a ladder.  Climb that ladder to the top and then sidle to your right to drop onto a small ledge.  Pick up the flares and go through the door that opens, (and closes ominously behind you).  Cross to the far side of the room and pick up the large med kit there.  Homing darts will come out of the walls so to cross the room safely you will need to either crawl or sprint.  Crawling is safer because you can’t get hit that way.

 

To open the next door you will need a key so turn around and face the door you just entered through.  Pull out your infra-red binoculars and look for the small alcove in the shadows to the left of that door.  Crawl to that alcove and light a flare.  Jump up and pull yourself up into that alcove.  Crawl into the next room.  Pull out your grenade gun and blow away the 2 mummies guarding the small altar.  Pick up the Hand of Sirius from the altar and light another flare.  Retrace your steps to the portcullis and place the Hand of Sirius in the small recess next to the door.  Walk through the door that opens in front of you to end the level.

 


Curse of the Scarab – Part 3

0 Secrets, 5 Kills.

 

Part 3 of “Curse of the Scarab” starts with Lara standing with her back to a closed portcullis.  If you look back through the portcullis you can see the final rooms of Part 2.  Looking forward, Lara is facing a dark corridor that turns left before plunging into darkness.  Light a flare and slowly WALK along the twisting corridor.  Jump over the spike pit hidden just around the corner, in the dark section of the corridor.  Once you reach the stairs, drop your flare and run to the top of the stairs until you reach the Rope Room.

 

When you enter the Rope Room, a flyby camera sequence will show you that the hole at the bottom of the pit leads down a vertical corridor to reach the large scarab altar back in the main room (as seen previously in level 2).  The message is simple:  It is a long way down so don’t fall!

 

Walk to the edge of the platform overlooking the pit and line Lara up so that she is facing the rope hanging down from the ceiling.  Jump backwards one square, take a running jump and grab the rope with your hands.  Slide to the bottom of the rope and turn Lara so that she is facing the corridor on the other side of the pit.  Swing back and forth 5 or 6 times until you have built up some momentum and then jump towards the corridor on the end of your forward swing.

 

If you mistimed your jump you will slide to the bottom of the pit and fall down the hole.  A fixed camera will then show you a grand aerial shot of Lara falling to her doom only to land splat centre in the middle of the altar.  If you look closely you will notice that from this angle, the altar looks suspiciously like a giant bull’s eye!  Hey, I thought it was funny! (Author’s joke).  Assuming that you have done everything correctly, you will land in the corridor on the other side of the pit facing the fire pit.

 

Look beyond the flames to where the light is flickering.  There is a waterhole there just out of sight and that flickering light is being reflected off the water’s surface.  Sprint through the flames and jump into the water before you burn to death.  Take a small med-kit (for your burns), and swim to the bottom of the pit.  Pick up the large med-kit lying there and swim through the open portcullis.  The portcullis will close behind you so you have to find air quickly or you will drown.  DON’T swim to the end of the corridor.  That’s a decoy (and a dead end) designed to make you waste time and to use up your air.  Instead look for the hole in the ceiling halfway along the corridor.  Swim up the vertical corridor to get air and then climb out of the water.


Run to the small altar and pick up the Hand of Orion.  A camera will show you the portcullis that closed behind you earlier opening.  Swim back through the now-open portcullis and climb out of the water where you first entered it to put out your flames.  Climb up the stairs to your left and do a forward jump to the ledge opposite and pull yourself up.  Follow the stairs to the top, climbing and jumping to the next ledge whenever the stairs fail.  When you reach the top of the stairs, place the Hand of Orion in the recess next to the closed portcullis.  Walk through the door that opens to the next room.

 

Study the faces on the floor closely.  The faces facing you are safe to walk on.  If you step on the other tiles you will burst into flames and burn to death because those tiles are cursed.  SLOWLY WALK around the room until the path fails.  Do a running jump to the point where the path begins again and follow it until you reach the corner.  At this point spikes will shoot out of the floor and then retract, over and over again.  Time the spikes and then run (or jump) over the tile after the spikes retract.

 

Once you turn the corner you now have to step on the tiles facing AWAY from you.  DON’T get them confused.  Follow the path again, jump over the point where the path breaks and SLOWLY WALK along the pathway until you reach the room’s exit.  More spikes will shoot up and down again blocking your escape.  Time the spikes and sprint over the tile when the spikes retract.

 

You should now be in the tile puzzle room.  Run over to the statue blocking the exit and look at the scarab floor tile in front of it.  Notice how the scarab is reversed on that tile.  Now pull out the statue so that it is standing on that tile.  The statue is no longer blocking the exit but the act of moving it onto that tile triggered some spikes in the crawl tunnel.  You didn’t think it was going to be that easy, did you?  Next run back to the door you first entered the room by.  Notice that the floor tile to the LEFT of the door also has a reversed scarab on it.  Push and pull the statue until it is standing on that tile and the spikes will retract.

 

Enter the crawl tunnel and crawl until you pass two dark openings, one on either side of you.  If you turn around and look back you will notice that the spikes have silently risen back up behind you so you can’t retreat.  Turn back around and crawl to the dimly lit alcove up ahead where you can stand up.  Once you start crawling again, whatever you do DON’T stop because 2 scorpions will come out of those dark openings behind you and another 2 scorpions will come down the crawl tunnel in front of you.  If the scorpions catch you in a part of the crawl tunnel where you can’t stand up, then you are TOAST.  Once the scorpions get close you can’t shoot them because they are below your sights.  You can’t crawl away from them either because they will block your path and slowly eat you to death.  The only way to survive is to crawl to the alcove up ahead where you can stand up and kill the scorpions.  Once you have killed the scorpions, crawl to the other end of the tunnel and climb up the ladder.


You are now in an overgrown room with ivy hanging off the columns and there is a small platform in the centre of the room.  First pick up the small med-kit on the central platform and then back off as a spiked ball will fall from the ceiling and squash you if you stay on the platform.  A fixed camera will give you a nice aerial view of the platform when you walk onto it.  Next run around the edge of the right side of the room until another camera shows you a hole in the ceiling (this is a hint).  Light a flare and climb up the ivy on the side of the pillar until you reach the corridor running over the top of the previous room.  Follow the corridor until you reach the chamber with the hole in the floor.

 

Position Lara so that she has her back to the wall and then do a forward jump to the first ledge above you.  Catch the edge of the ledge with your hands and pull yourself up.  Jump to the second ledge above you in the same way only be sure to stay on the left side.  If you are caught on the right side of the ledge, you will be squashed by a spiked ball falling down from above.  Jump to the third and fourth ledges above you in the same way as you jumped to the previous ledges.

 

On the fourth and final ledge, walk to the edge of the ledge and do a forward jump to the hallway opposite.  Catch the edge with your hands and pull yourself up into that hallway.  Run down the hallway until a ninja appears.  Stop and blow him away.  Next WALK to the end of the hallway.  A camera will show you emerging from a tunnel in the side of a pyramid.  Press the LOOK button to admire the view (pretty impressive isn’t it).  Slide down the slope to end the level.
