TEMPLE OF QUATALPAC

OUTSIDE AREAS

 

Really, is there an error in the gameplay here? The author lets players advance without opening the main N double doors to get access to the temple area, by simply jumping to the top of the walls. But anyway, I'll write the way to open those doors like the builder "thought".

 

Turn around and run SE to kill the soldier in that corner; he'll leave the Crossbow when he dies. In that far SE corner you can climb the stairs and enter through the very left side of the barrier, but I found nothing inside. There are two double doors at the E side of this courtyard, but I found nothing behind them. Another soldier awaits you near the N arch and he drops the Laser Sight when he dies. Kill the soldier above that arch, too. Beware of the grenades! They can kill Lara! Go through this arch and kill the soldier at the top of the next wall. Go there and climb to the top of the wall where the soldier was. Advance S and go to the top of the arch and pick up the crossbow explosive ammo the soldier left behind. Safety drop to the ground floor, face W and combine the crossbow with the sight and use the explosive ammo to shoot the barrier in the W wall. Inside, you can shoot a wooden box in the room where the barrels are to get a large medipack. In the previous room you can open a floor trapdoor near the box in the SW corner (facing W) and drop down to the sewers.

 

THE SEWERS

 

Advance until you see a door opening to your left. (In the next W room in front of you, after killing another soldier you can shoot a wooden box to get shotgun ammo.) Go through that corridor (avoid the left passage) to another door which opens automatically. Turn right and enter a storage room with a high jumpswitch in the S wall. The first wooden box to your left is moveable; use it to reach the jumpswitch to open the large double doors outside to get access to the temple area. Make your way back there, killing another soldier on your way, and pick up the flares he drops. To the left of those now opened doors is a building with two openings with barriers. Use the crossbow with explosive ammo to shoot either barrier and inside shoot a box in the corner to get shotgun ammo; kill another soldier outside.

 

TEMPLE SURROUNDINGS

 

Walk through the N doors you opened with the jumpswitch in the sewers and find yourself in another large outside area. Run N, W and S to find a building up the S hills with another barrier you can trespass from its left side, but I found nothing there. Go N to the temple area. To the right of the temple entrance there is a small building with a crawlspace in its S wall. Go inside to get SECRET #1: the Shotgun. Kill the soldiers guarding the temple entrance if you want (they will not attack you) and go inside.

 

TWO SWITCHES

 

Follow the only possible path to your right to a room with a fountain and a small pool and kill some bats there. There is a closed door N and two corridors E and W. You can choose what you want; at the end of each path you'll pull a switch to open the door in this pool room.

 

East route:

 

Run for your life to avoid the rolling ball and drop into the pit in the next room; run through the N corridor at the bottom and continue to the very end of this path, taking care of the darts in the next room (beware, they're poisonous!) to find the first switch in the final room. Take the goodies from the pedestals and return to the initial pit with the ball, killing a couple of soldiers on your way and picking up the flares and the large medipack they drop. You'll have to move the cage near the skeleton through the corridor to get up. Return to the pool room.

 

West route:

 

In the first room kill the soldier and pick up the ammo he drops. Time the swinging spiked hammer and climb the central ledge to avoid two rolling balls. At the far S end you can spot the second switch, but if you want you can drop into the pit and go through the long S crawlspace to get SECRET #2: the Revolver and revolver ammo. Go back to the pit, climb, go S to pull the switch and return to the fountain room (another soldier appears with a small medipack); the door is now open.

 

FIRST HAND OF ORION

 

In the next room, climb one of the niches in the central structure, push the moveable block and climb to the room above to get SECRET #3: get all four goodies from the pedestals. Following the E route you'll arrive at a room with four dragons spitting fire at the bottom. There's another error in the gameplay here; if you drop to the very bottom of this room, you'll find a dead end and you'll never be able to return up (thanks, raidertom). Drop to the middle floor and time the fires to take a running jump to reach the central ledge, or don't drop and from the top of this room go either S or N ledges and run off to the central ledge in the middle level (losing some health). Pick up the small medipack there and pull the switches in the N and S alcoves to open a door for later.

 

Now safety drop to the ground floor and go through the W passage;  eventually you'll find a lava room. Grab the monkeyswing and time the fire emitters to reach the other side. At the end of the path you'll find a room with a blue gem (the Hand of Orion). It seems that the water is not really water in this pool. Return to the main room with the dragons the way you came. Something in this room has changed: in the N and S sides of the room, between the dragons, a couple of blocks have lowered, revealing a passage to get SECRET #4: shotgun normal ammo and a small medipack. Return outside and through the E opening this time. Climb the pole and jump back to any ledge, through the door you opened some time ago and this time you're forced to time the fires of the dragons, jump to the central ledge and to the other side of the room, where you can climb to the top from either the SW or the NW corner and return to the main room.

 

SECOND HAND OF ORION

 

Kill the soldier who appears and now go through the W passage. In the next room climb the S ledge and jump to grab the opening in the ceiling. Use the horizontal poles to cross the spike pits and jump into the water in the last room. Locate the underwater lever under the bridge and pull it to open the UW door in the opposite wall. Continue swimming until you can get out of the water. Shoot the white vase in the left corner to find a small medipack. (There is a wall switch in this room, but I never learned what it did). Continue through the S passage to a room with a deep pit and two trunks, part of a now incomplete bridge. The pillars under those trunks are climbable, so climb down to the bottom of the pit and follow the N passage to find SECRET #5: a large medipack and crossbow ammo. Return to the top of the room and from here Lara can walk over the trunks to reach the other side. In the next room pick up the second blue gem (Hand of Orion) (the same problem with the water here) and return all the way back to the main room the way you came, killing a soldier who drops revolver ammo.

 

ENDING

 

In the main room, place the gems in the mouths of the snakes in the N wall to open the door. Approach the back of the room and pick up the damned figurine from the pedestal to finish the level.
