Level 1: The Secret Temple

Part 1

SPIKE BALL ROOM

The level opens with Lara sliding down and off a short ramp. When you land, immediately jump back and off the landing, and grasp the edge. Wait while 2 spiked balls go whizzing past your head. Drop down and proceed forward toward the gap. Before jumping over [stay well back from the edge], wait while another spiked ball comes toward you and drops into the gap. Below and to the left of the gap is a small landing. Jumping here will stop the earthquake.

From this small landing you can see monkey bars under the walkway above. You can use these to move to the end of the room. [But if you have trouble with the grab, you can instead use the back flip and grab maneuver described below and simply stroll across the walkway and jump down to the tile.] Swing over, drop, grab and shimmy to the right where you can climb up on a narrow ledge. In the corner is a yellow-and blue floor tile. Stand on this square to reveal a switch on the pillar back where you entered the room. To get back there, you'll need to jump back & forth on the sloping sides of the room below you, while moving back toward the small platform near the center. From there, a back flip to the slope behind, continuing into a forward jump and grab will put you back on the upper walkway. Jump over and pull the switch to open the door on the wall above. Make the jump to the now open alcove and pull the lever, which puts out the flame below the ladder. Make your way to the ladder and exit the room.

ROOM WITH BURNING EYEPIECE/UNDERWATER TUNNELS

In the next room, you will find a lever in the middle of each of the 4 walls. Pull them each, but do it quickly as you will soon be pursued by a fire demon. Pulling all 4 levers fills the pit below with water; jump in quickly to get rid of them. Notice the underwater lever beneath the burning pedestal - pull it. Head into the tunnel (north). To the right is another underwater lever to pull. Explore the short network of tunnels (picking up the flares), until you find the opening at the back to climb out. Activate the reach-in switch to extinguish the flame on the pedestal. Return for the EYE PIECE, and then grab small medpaks in the SE and SW corners of the room and red shotgun shells in the water near the entrance to the water tunnel.

MUMMY ROOM

Swim back up the tunnel through the now-open door at the end and up through the opening straight ahead. Let Lara slide into the pink liquid below and walk directly ahead (WITHOUT STOPPING) to the platform at the other end of the room and climb out before the flames ignite the pool. Climb the pole in the corner and avoid the annoying mummy. Back-flip from the pole to the raised landing and push the button. This raises another block at the back of the room, giving you access to the second EYE PIECE [on top of the tall pillar in the NW corner] as well as a small crawlspace in the darkened corner where you will find revolver ammo. After getting them, head across the flat squares above the slope on the left, back toward the entrance to the room to find Secret #1 (Uzi clips and blue shotgun shells). Carefully angle a running jump to the ladder, which has appeared by the entrance, and leave the room.

Back in the water, make a left around the corner and surface in the next room. Shoot the scorpion. As you approach the door, the grate in the floor will burst into flames. Carefully jump to the recessed area between the sloping stone blocks. From there, angle a jump onto the next sloping block on your side & hold the jump key while flipping back & forth on the blocks and toward the door until you land on flat ground. Combine the EYE PIECES and use the EYE OF HORUS to open the door.

ROOM WITH BURNING HAND OF SIRIUS

Enter the room with the flaming pedestal and shoot another scorpion. Go down the hall to the left and stand on the yellow-and-blue square, which opens another door back in the flaming pedestal room. Use the monkey bars overhead to swing back out, or the door will close when you cross the other colored square. SLOWLY proceed into the now open hall on the other side of the room until the spikes pop up in front of you. [Turn around and locate the ladder.] Jump up & grab the landing above [back flip] and proceed on and down to the end of the hallway and pull the lever. Head back to the flaming pedestal room, where a new block has been raised, giving you access to an overhead switch. Pull it to open the large stone door leading to the next room.

No time to look around as the fire demon has reappeared. Head into the next room and straight toward the back wall (avoid falling into the empty pools in the middle of the room). On the back wall are 2 buttons, to the left and right of the carved stone door. Push them to fill the pools then jump in to dampen those fire demons.

Part 2

ROOM WITH THREE POOLS

There are 3 pools in this room -- north, middle and south. Beginning in the north pool, follow a tunnel to a room with an underwater switch. Pulling this switch opens a gate in the south pool, giving access to a second underwater switch there. Pulling the switch in the south pool opens the gate in the middle pool. Before leaving the south pool, pick up the flares in the room at the east end.

Pull the underwater switch in the middle pool to open a gate in the north (first pool). Find the blue shotgun shells before leaving the pool. Back in the north pool, go through the open gate and follow the tunnel to an upper level. Push (action key) the doors to open them and go right to find an overhead switch. Pulling it raises a block near the entrance to the room. Drop down and climb these blocks. Turning to face the entrance, you will see a lion’s head statue on the wall. Shoot it to drop a rope to your left. Using the rope, swing over to the next landing.

Open the doors and slide down, catching the pole. Turn to face the door on the right (as you entered), positioning Lara for a back flip into the door on the left. Pull the switch (dropping 2 more ropes in the center of the pool room), and then use the pole to back flip to the right door and exit. Make your way back up the blocks at the entrance and carefully line up a running jump to the first new rope. From there, swing and jump to the second rope.

Turn to the right and make a tricky short swing/jump to the small landing (notice that the landing to the left is on fire). From the small landing, shoot the second lion’s head statue. This opens a door leading to the HAND OF ORION. To get there, head back through the north pool tunnel to the upper level. This time, turn left and line up a running jump/grab to the landing across the way. Go around the corner and get the puzzle piece. Notice the other door in this hallway -- you’ll come back to it later.

Back around the corner, on the landing and facing south, you can see that the flame is now out on the other small landing. Line up a running jump/grab, arcing slightly in midair to reach the landing, where you shoot the third lion’s head statue. Use the rope to swing across to the other small landing. Looking south, you will see another landing in the corner of the room. A running jump/grab with a slight arc will get you there. [Don't start making your arc until you're past the pillar to your left.] Go around the corner and down the hall to pull a lever. A flyby shows you that the flame guarding the HAND OF SIRIUS is now out. [Go get it, then place the two Hands in their receptacles in the large columns straddling the middle pool in the pool room.]

Placing the 2 HANDS opens the carved stone door at the back of the room. It also releases the 3 hounds, so be prepared to deal with them. Head part the newly opened door to the next room.

ROOM WITH GIANT GOLDEN SETH EFFIGIES

Walk out onto the hand of the giant gold dog effigy. Across the way, a gate and a flame block your path. Turn around and, using the ladder wall, make your way down to the opening in the wall above the bridge. Activate the reach-in switch to put out the first flame above. Make your way across the bridge and climb to another dark opening. At the back, a lever opens the gate above. Make your way back up the ladder wall and cross statue with a running jump/grab to the hand on the hand at other side.

Go through the door and shoot the scorpion. Push the button on the left, which releases another fire demon. Fortunately, it also clears the water in the pool below, so turn and head back to the statue room and take a dive. Under the bridge is an under water lever to open the door leading out onto the second giant statue above. Toward the far end of the pool is a landing with another button that opens the 3rd stone door after the second giant statue. [Reverse roll, angle Lara to the left and take a running jump to the landing in front of the climbing ladder.]

Go back up the ladder wall and across again to the other side of the room. Inside the door, a ramp leads up to the right. Run up and cut to the right as quickly as you can to avoid spiked ball that comes crashing down. At the top of the ramp is a hallway to the left. [Take a standing jump to it.] Push the button to extinguish the flame on the hand of the other large statue. Run or jump down the other side of the ramp and cut to the right quickly as another spiked ball follows you. You can now make your way across to the room in the SW corner, taking care of another demon hound as you enter. Pull the overhead switch in the back right corner of the room.

A cut scene shows a door opening somewhere. It’s the one in the hallway where you got the HAND OF ORION earlier. To get there and pick up a Secret along the way, head back over the statue and up and down the ramp. At the bottom of the ramp is a small opening of water. Jump in and pick up Secret #2 (large medpak). Now follow this water tunnel back to north pool tunnel (the gate will open as you approach), where you can access the upper level and the newly opened door. [Turn left when you emerge over the pool room. Take a running jump and grab to the next landing. Pull up and run forward, turning right at the bend. Turn left into the open door.] Pushing the button raises a block back in the room off the dog statue room. Make your way back there. [Retrace your steps back to the upper entrance overlooking the pool room, turn right, jump back into the water hole, swim south a short distance until you reach the intersection, turn right and then make a quick left to return to the pool room. Go through the door to the east (marked by a mound of dirt) to bring you back to the dog statue room. Take a running jump and grab to the other side, then turn right and go up the ramp and down the other side. Take another running jump and grab from the first gold hand to the other, then pull up and run forward into the next room to locate the raised block.]

Climb and shimmy to a landing with a button. Push it and take a running jump across to a ladder opposite. Jump to the next landing and look to the right for a landing with an overhead switch. Pulling the switch opens the doors above. Make your way up and through the doors. At the back of this room, climb down the ladder wall and find the water opening. Jump in and follow the blue tunnel to the next room. [Ignore the passage leading downward, which ends at a closed door.]

Part 3

COURTYARD WITH FOUR LARGE DOORS

On the wall to the left of the north doors is a climbable grate. At the top, arrange a jump over to the ledge above the west doors. Find the overhead switch and pull it, raising a block in the room above where you entered. Return via the water tunnel and ladder. Take care of the demon hounds that have shown up, then climb to the alcove and push the button. This opens a gate in the courtyard, giving you access to a yellow globe. [Climb back down the ladder and swim through the water tunnel until you return to the courtyard.]

Back In the courtyard, you’ll see 4 circles on the floor around the center of the room. Drag the first globe on to the SE circle to open the southern doors. Before entering, take a detour for the next Secret. Pushing the button upstairs has released a rope above the east doors. Climb back up [using the ladder near the NW corner], and using the ledges and the rope, make your way around to the ledge above the south doors for Secret #3: flares [and Uzi ammo]. The quickest way down is to safety drop to the raised pillar in the corner below, losing just a bit of health.

URN PUZZLE

Go through the southern doors and past two inaccessible globes until you reach a yellow urn. Push it ahead to the yellow-and-blue square to open a door in a hallway a couple steps back. Here another urn awaits. Locate the dark circle on the floor at the end of this hallway; you’ll need to maneuver the urn there to open the next door in the adjacent hallway.

Inside that door is a lever [beside the closed door] to open the final door where another dark circle graces the floor. You’ll need to move the first urn here to complete the puzzle. (Note: Another yellow-and-blue square in the hallway outside here is a trick. If you move the urn there, it will close the door). [You can side flip behind the urn when you get it to the fatal square.] Now you can access another globe in the hallway outside. This globe must be placed on the NE circle in the courtyard to open the eastern doors.

Head through the doors and down the stairs to a room where you’ll need to use the landings and rope to get to the other side, where you’ll find an antechamber with a closed gate straight ahead and a open doorway to the right.

TREASURE ROOM

Head to the right and up the stairs to find your prize: THE AMULET OF HORUS. Grabbing the AMULET opens the gate back in the antechamber, but first you’ll want to get some goodies here. Along each side of the stairway is a wall topped with columns. Behind the wall to the left (as you look out of the room) is another yellow urn. Move it to the colored square to open a door hidden above in the right corner of the room. There, at the top of the stairs, jump and climb to a crawlspace to find Secret #4: red shotgun shells. Before getting down, shimmy to the left to find some Uzi clips.

Now climb over the wall to the right (as you look out) of the stairway [the one down below opposite the urn you pushed earlier] to find some revolver ammo. Now you can head back down to the antechamber, but you’ll have to move to the left or right after clearing the door to avoid being pin-cushioned by the rolling spike ball that follows you. At the same time, draw your pistols to dispose of the demon hound lurking below.

As you enter the antechamber, you may notice a block rising in the corner. Ignore it for now and head through the now-open gate door [to the east].

FIRE PIT ROOM

Make running jump over the fire pit and enter the room behind. Notice the alcove with a button in the wall above. Turn right and climb the ladder, then jump across to the next pillar. A dark crawlspace on the left hides a vase. Crouch and shoot it, then crawl in to get the Uzi clips. Back out on the pillar, face the opening in the wall opposite. Make a running jump, hitting the action key in the air, to land in the opening.

Use the monkey bars to (taking the path to the right) to clear the nasty looking pool. (NOTE: Getting on the monkey bars is a bit tricky. From the back of your small landing, do a run & jump, then immediately press and hold action to grab the bars). At the other side, shoot the vase then make your way back to the fire pit room. A block is now in place under the alcove with the button. A flyby shows the flame going out in front of the other globe in the recess off the courtyard. Head back to the antechamber.

COLONNADE ROOM

Now use the raised block to access the crawlspace in the corner. (POSSIBLE BUG: If this block disappears, just cross back into the treasure room to re-trigger it). Drop down from the crawlspace and deal with the waiting demon hound.

Move toward the back of the room and down the ramp to retrieve the flares. Turn around and head up the ramp until you can jump and grab the wall on your left between the last two columns. Notice the small window and the stairs behind; you’ll be there later. Draw your pistols and angle a jump past the last column to the back of the room. Shoot the mangy demon hound that comes from the doorway. Now you can pick up Secret #5: normal grenades. Push to open the doors and return to the courtyard.

Move the next globe into place on the NW circle to open the northern doors.

ROOM WITH SLOPING PILLARS

Head through the northern doors and around the corner. The sequence here is as follows: Make a running jump and grab to the pillar directly ahead. Shimmy to the right. Pull up and slide down the other side almost to the bottom, then jump and grab the edge of the pillar ahead. Facing north, you’ll see a landing with a yellow-and-blue tile across the room. Use the monkey bars to get there. Landing on the tile will open the exit door in the SW corner.

Monkey swing back to the flat pillar. Facing east, do a standing jump from the front of the pillar to the sloping pillar below (hold down the jump key until you land). Do a short slide then jump to the next sloping pillar. Continue holding the jump key as you hit this pillar, then the next, until you land safely on the platform below. Climb the ladder ahead.

VASE AND URN PUZZLE

Begin by shooting all the vases. There are 4 altogether, including one hidden above, that you access through a hole in the ceiling of the hallway at the top of the ladder (this is the passage glimpsed through the window in the colonnade room). With all 4 vases shattered, you can now go back for the final Secret of the level.

Back in the room you just came from, the water is now blue and sparkling. Jump in and find the opening on the south wall, and the large medpak inside. Now swim across and find the opening on the north wall and Secret #6: revolver ammo and Uzi clips. Swim back to the ladder and climb to the passage above.

There are 2 dark circles in this small network of hallways. Ignore the one you see directly ahead as you climb off the ladder (Moving the urn here shuts a door which makes it impossible to move the urn to the other circle. To open the door you have to swim back and repeat the previous steps of this section.). Instead maneuver the urn to the circle at the end of the other hallway. Once it is in place, a cut scene shows a hidden door has been opened back off the courtyard. Return there via the water tunnel near at hand. [When the door at the end of the tunnel opens for you, swim up and turn left, not right, to get back to the courtyard. Remember that the globes are down the south hall.] The door is next to where you got the last 2 globes, and the final puzzle piece is inside. Move the globe to the last available circle to open the western doors.

Head through the western doors to find yourself in a dark room with a mummy at the far end. Along the left-hand wall make three jumps over the deep trenches to the platform where the mummy is. Climb the block in the corner and jump to the monkey bars. Follow the monkey bars all the way around to the lighted crawl space and use it to enter the next room. Inside, push open the doors and prepare to deal with a bit of nastiness on the other side.

SETH'S LAIR

As you enter, a flyby shows a crystal wall shattering and nasty old Seth storms out. He’s mellowed with age, though, because he won’t attack Lara when she’s on the upper level -- he’ll just stomp around below growling. He is deadly, though, once you’re below, so you have to keep moving and use medpaks as needed.

Ignore all the things in the room that look like they are meant for climbing or monkey swinging. The objective here is to activate three switches and get out. The exit is in the SW corner of the room on the upper level.

The fastest way to get all three switches is as follows:

First, jump in to the water below and follow the pool clockwise until you reach a tunnel. Follow the tunnel to the underwater switch and pull it. Follow the tunnel back to open water and exit the pool to the north. Turn right and run past the chamber from which Seth first appeared and find the button in the NE corner of the room (ground level). You must now make your way up to the top level using the raised block at the SW corner of central ground level. Once up, turn right [the exit door is to the left] and make a running jump over to the north side of the room and push the button on the north wall, opening the door to the exit. Head back and go through the exit and down the ramp to end the level.

 

Level 2: Edfou, Kingdom of Horus

UNDERGROUND CAVERN

Before moving, note the revolver ammo on the floor ahead. Pick it up quickly, then run immediately toward the rear of the room as a boulder comes crashing down. Pick up the Uzi clips near the ladder, then STAND STILL. Another boulder will crash down in front of the ladder, after which it is safe to climb up to the top.

When you reach the top, turn around to find Secret #7: The Uzi on a ledge. Shimmy along the sloped ledge to retrieve it, and then head back to the corridor at the top of the ladder. Follow the corridor - shooting 2 bats along the way - until you reach an opening to the outside.

COURTYARD WITH BURNING PEDESTAL

Climb up to the top of the opening and be prepared to shoot the armed baddie waiting to ambush you at the bottom of the ramp. That done, shoot the 2 vases at the top of the ramp - one contains Uzi clips and the other holds red shotgun ammo. Take note of the closed gate in the east wall, then head down through the opening near the burning pedestal and into the fountain courtyard. Pick up the red shotgun ammo in the SW corner.

COURTYARD WITH LAND ROVER

Head through one of the openings in the north wall to emerge in another courtyard where a Land Rover sits idling. To the right is a carved stone door flanked by 2 gem locks. You’ll need to find those gems. Begin by going west to a small lagoon.

CLOISTER WITH LARGE IRON GATE

Jump in and swim directly across to the ramp on the other side. Climb out and go left on the narrow quay to find Uzi clips. Now do a jump/grab to the archway above the ramp and jump down to the stairs on the other side. When you reach the bottom of the stairs, 2 hounds attack. Take care of them, then have a look around the cloister you have entered. In the SW corner is a large iron gate. In a room to the north is the MOTORBIKE in a locked garage. Shoot the vases near the garage to find explosive crossbow ammo and a small medpak. Lara will return here toward the end of the level, but for now return via the stairs and archway to the lagoon.

LAGOON

Jump back in the water and turn right (south) and swim through an opening under the building [past the pursuing crocodile]. Immediately turn left and make for the small quay where you can climb out and shoot the [other] crocodile that pursues you. Shoot the vase on the nearby sand ledge.

Now you can swim toward the other end of this small channel, picking up a small medpak and, just around the corner, THE DIAMOND OF THE NILE. Turn back and dodge the crocodile that’s waiting to chomp you. Swim back through the opening into the lagoon with the boat. If the croc follows you, climb out and take care of him with the weapon of your choice.

In the NW corner of the lagoon is a small fissure leading into another pool. Once through, swim past the building, make a right and head for the archway in the wall to the east, where Lara can climb out. Turn and shoot the crocodile that chases you (NOTE: You can climb out on the ramp to the west, but then you have to deal with the crocodile and an armed baddie simultaneously). Then, turn and deal with the crocodile in the pool on the other side of the archway.

Now swim over to the landing by the closed gate. Behind it is the other DIAMOND, but you have some more work to do before getting it. Shoot the vase above on the sand bank. The gate at the back of the courtyard where you began is now open, so you’ll need to head back. On the way, though, make a small detour for a Secret.

Head back through the archway between the 2 pools. Make a left and swim in the narrow channel between the yellow building and a quay with a stone bench. As you go, keep your eye out for a small opening at the foot of the building that you can swim through. Inside, climb on to the landing. Angle a running jump to the ladder across the room. [It's actually easier to take a standing jump and grab to the fissure in the wall, then shimmy to the right until you reach the ladder.] Climb up, then do a rolling back flip and grab the ladder behind. Move left and around the corner on the ladder until you reach its end. Do a rolling back flip with a grab to the platform behind you and pick up Secret #8: a large medpak & revolver ammo. Dive back in the water and return to the first courtyard.

COURTYARD WITH BURNING PEDESTAL

As you enter, a hound attacks from the left. Take care of him and head through the small doorway in the corner. Deal with another hound that sneaks up from the right as you enter.

Using the blocks, begin climbing and jumping until you reach a darkened balcony above. Grab the grenade gun super ammo on the block to the right of the dark doorway. Then head through the door and to the right. Activate the reach-in switch at the corridor’s end to open the gate blocking the second DIAMOND. At the other end of the corridor, you can look through a locked gate at the rooftop, but you can’t open it. So return the way you came and go fetch the gem.

COURTYARD WITH LAND ROVER

Once you have the second DIAMOND OF THE NILE in hand, use the 2 gems to open the carved stone door in the courtyard with the Land Rover. An armed baddie and a hound wait inside to ambush Lara. A bat will also pester you. So clear the area of enemies and pick up the flares near the south wall. The vase on top of the low wall at the back right also contains blue shotgun shells.

Now jump on the block by the north wall and activate the reach-in switch to extinguish the flame on the pedestal in the first courtyard. You can now retrieve the GATE KEY there.

COURTYARD WITH BULL STATUES

With the key in hand, head back past the Land Rover to the courtyard at the far north. In the columned depression, pick up the normal crossbow ammo and the grenade gun super ammo. Now deal with the armed baddie who lurks below in the courtyard. Use the GATE KEY to open the gate at the back of the courtyard. Be prepared to blast the crocodile that waits on the other side.

Hop in the fountain pool and swim into the small opening to the south. Climb out at the end of the channel to find the CROWBAR on one side and small medpak and Uzi clips on the other. Now it’s time to pick up some goodies and another Secret. Head back to the first courtyard [and into the anteroom with blocks] and climb back up to the dark hallway with the reach-in switch. You can now open the gate using the CROWBAR.

ATOP THE WALLS

As you emerge through the gate, notice the large medpak ahead in the distance. Make your way over and get it. Now return to the rooftop by the gate and continue south to the wall over the first courtyard. Look into the small courtyard in the back to see the revolver ammo atop a column. Get it, and [take a running] jump [and grab] to another column by the wall at the back of the courtyard. Pick up the Uzi clips. Climb onto the wall. Behind the wall and below to the right lies Secret #9: grenade gun flash ammo. At the other end of the narrow conduit you will find more Uzi clips.

SMALL COURTYARD WITH SLOPING BLOCK

Head back to the lagoon and swim again through the small fissure In the NW corner. This time, get out on the ramp and enter another small courtyard guarded by an armed baddie. Take care of him and pick up the red shotgun shells he drops. Behind the sloping block is another gate that Lara can open with the CROWBAR. But first, climb the block by the small door, and then angle a [running] jump/grab up to the higher block in the SW corner. Pick up a small medpak and activate the reach-in switch to open a second gate inside the passageway below. Jump down and shoot the crocodile that charges in. Open the gate using the CROWBAR and pick up another GATE KEY inside.

BLUE-CARPETED HALLWAY

Run up the blue-carpeted stairs, but stop as you turn the corner to avoid sliding into the firetrap. Before jumping across, turn and look up to find a small alcove containing Secret #10: red shotgun shells, Uzi clips and small medpak. Afterwards, make a running jump across the firetrap to the slanted block, continue to hold the jump key to clear the next firetrap and then grab the block ahead and pull up. One more standing jump/grab across a third firetrap puts you in the upper hallway.

Jump the deep pit and move beyond the slightly sloping square. After a second, a boulder falls behind you, revealing an opening in the ceiling. Go back and climb up to get the GOLDEN STAR there. Now continue back down the hallway over the second pit and through the door at the end. Shoot 2 hounds loitering on the terrace and place the GOLDEN STAR in the receptacle at the far end.

CLOISTER WITH LARGE IRON GATE

When you place the star, you hear a gate open below. Looking down from the terrace, you’ll spot 2 demon hounds waiting below. Finish them off from the safety of the terrace if you like. Drop down and find the MOTORCYCLE waiting behind the newly opened gates. Before you can use it, you’ll have to open the large iron gates across the way.

Now move toward the large iron gates. As you approach, look for the dark underground passage on the right. Enter the underground passage and open the gate with your CROWBAR. Climb the ladder to the room above.

WHITE TILED ROOM

Begin by climbing over the wall that is to your right as you enter the room. On the other side, shoot 2 bats and then open the gate near the flame with your CROWBAR. Enter and drop down into the trough to your left to retrieve Secret #11: revolver ammo and Uzi clips.

Now, position Lara at the bottom of the ramp, just to the right of the centerline. Run about halfway up and stop as 2 boulders begin to descend, the left one slightly ahead of the right. The moment the left one has passed, do a left jump to avoid the second one. Now ascend to the top and use your GATE KEY to open the gate. Drop down inside and shoot the vase.

Return to the main room and climb over the wall on the other side. Shoot a couple more pesky bats, then open the gate near the flame. Repeat the climb up the ramp exactly as before and shoot the vase at the top. You can now return to the main room and pick up the 2 DIAMONDS OF THE NIL (the second gate will open as you pick up the first gem).

Place the first gem in its receptacle on the north side (right side as you entered the room). Don’t linger on the blue tile as a boulder comes rolling down from behind. Cross the room and place the second gem in its receptacle to the south. Again, beware of the boulder.

Turn right and climb the short wall, then up to the higher block. Turn around and climb to the next ledge above (with the black and white tiles). Pick up the small medpak, and then return to the higher block below. Look for a gap in the wall opposite and do a jump/grab to it. Shimmy left and pull up in the alcove for some blue shotgun shells, then continue to shimmy to the left until Lara can pull up into the next hallway. Make note of the locked door on your right, then run down the hallway and around the corner. Jump the gap (the boulders won’t fall unless you touch the blue squares at the bottom).

Continue down to the end of the corridor, shooting 2 more bats along the way. You have found the second GOLDEN STAR but it is still locked away. Drop down and shimmy left to an alcove to retrieve another GATE KEY. Jump to the ledge opposite and pick up the flares. Now return to the south end of the upper hallway and use the GATE KEY to open the gate. Activate the reach-in switch to open the gate guarding the GOLDEN STAR. With the STAR in hand, make your way back to the cloister outside.

CLOISTER WITH LARGE IRON GATE

Return to the room with the MOTORCYCLE and place the second GOLDEN STAR in its receptacle. Get on the bike and ride toward the large iron gates, which are now open. Stop as you enter and line yourself up for a straight run up the slope ahead. Hit the gas and don’t let up as you clear the jump above. On the other side, continue to accelerate until you have made it over the second jump.

AREA WITH DEEP PIT AND MAZE

Climb off the bike and look over the pit to the west. Jump to the block jutting out over the pit. Turn around to face east and do a safety drop off of the block to the pit below. Light a flare and find the short block to climb on. In a small well on the other side, pick up the revolver ammo. Climb back up, then up to the next landing where you must activate the reach-in switch to open a gate back in the maze.

Climb up to the next landing, and then use the ivy on the wall to ascend to the white sandstone block above. Make a running jump back to the first block and the area where you left the bike.

Now enter the maze. As you turn the first corner, 2 hounds lunge at Lara. A moment later, a third hound will come around the corner. After dealing with them, go to the end of the first alleyway and turn left. Find the opening at the end and climb up. Use the ivy on the wall on the other side to climb down into the deep pit. Light a flare and pick up Secret #12: crossbow explosive ammo and grenade gun normal ammo.

Climb back up the ivy-covered wall and head toward the east of the small maze, staying to the left. Pick up the DIAMOND in an alcove and place it in the receptacle in the next alcove to open the last gate. Head through the gateway and down the slope to end the level.

 

Levels 3 and 4: Philae's Ruins/The Timeless Sands

PHILAE'S RUINS

 

ROOM WITH RED-PATTERNED COLUMNS

Pick up blue shotgun shells in the NE corner. Notice the puzzle receptacle to the left of the door in the north wall. Lara’s first objective is to find the piece that fits there. There are 2 alternatives for doing this:

ALTERNATIVE 1: On the east wall are 3 buttons. Push the one on the left and the one right - leave the middle one untouched. Now turn and go to the west side of the room. At the base of the column in the middle is another button. Push it. You have now raised 3 iron columns over the flames by the west wall. Climb to the one in the NW corner and use a series of jumps to reach the red-patterned column in the SW corner and pick up the EARTH KEY.

ALTERNATIVE 2: If you feel like a fight, press only the MIDDLE button on the east wall. 2 black-and-green clad ninjas attack Lara. Send them to the next life and one will drop the EARTH KEY as he expires.

Once you have the key, place it in the receptacle. A tremor erupts, up heaving the room behind you. Run to the SE corner and find the WATER KEY. Make your way to the SW corner of the room. Don’t step on the grate in the newly created pool or Lara will have a long, and ultimately unpleasant, fall. Climb the rocks in the SW corner and find the receptacle for the WATER KEY. Placing the key fills the tunnel in the pool with water, allowing a crocodile to escape. Shoot the varmint and head down the water tunnel.

WATER TUNNEL

First, head straight down and pick up the flares. Now swim down the tunnel heading to the south and climb out at the end. As you ascend the stairs, be prepared for another ninja ambush. Continue to the top and climb out. To the east is a deep, dark pit. Look in carefully to find a block to which Lara can drop (light a flare if necessary). Continue down to the bottom of the pit and find Secret #13: grenade gun flash ammo. Climb back out of the pit. There’s no way to cross it, so head back down the stairs.

When you turn the last corner of the stairs, look up to see a dark alcove above the entrance to the water tunnel. Arrange a running jump/grab to the alcove and pick up the SHOTGUN + red shotgun shells. At the back of the alcove, activate the reach-in switch. A cut scene shows an iron box rising in the pit outside. Head back up the stairs and to the pit.

OUTSIDE BY THE DEEP PITS

Standing on the newly raised platform, arrange a running jump/grab to the opposite side of the pit. Turn left and go around the corner into small channel in the sand. Shoot a scorpion and pick up the flares at the end. Climb to a small opening in the dunes to find yourself above another deep pit.

Use the columns below to safely descend to the bottom. At the east and west ends are 2 tunnel entrances. The one to the west is blocked, so head down in to the other. As you head down the tunnel, notice the small gold statue behind the gate on your right. Continue down the tunnel into the next level.

 

THE TIMELESS SANDS



LARGE LAVA ROOM

As Lara enters, a block rises to her left and a flyby shows the room below: ledges, switches, ropes - and lots of bubbling lava at the bottom. This puzzle can be solved different ways; here is one.

Begin by turning right and using the rope to swing to the ledge on the south wall. Above the first raised platform, activate the reach-in switch to raise a block along the east wall. Now WALK off the other side of platform and stop. A gauntlet of spikes pops up from the floor ahead at timed intervals. To cross it, you’ll need to carefully time a SPRINT to the other side. Start from just off the raised platform and begin running when the spikes pop up. Press and hold the sprint key (/) to clear the spikes in time.

On the other side is another reach-in switch above a short raised platform. This switch raises a block in the NE part of the room. At the [east] end of the ledge, turn and face north. Jump to the first raised block, then to the ledge with the lever. Push it to raise a green block on the west wall. Now do a running jump to the gray block on the north wall ahead, and a second running jump [and grab] up to the next ledge with a lever. Pushing the lever raises a second green block and lowers a third below, allowing access to the next switch.

Make a long running jump to the top of the raised green blocks on the west wall below. Do not push the next lever on the S ledge yet (or you will miss several pickups and a Secret). Instead, turn toward the structure in the center of the room and make a long running jump down to it. Drop to the sandy landing inside and pick up the crossbow normal ammo. Look south for a ladder and an opening in the wall. Make a running jump + grab to the ladder above the opening. With Lara dangling at the bottom of this ladder, let go and then grab the ladder below the opening below. Pull inside, activate the reach-in switch to raise a walkway around the perimeter of the room. It also fills the bottom of the central structure behind you with sand. So jump back down, shoot the scorpion and pick up a small medpak + Uzi clips.

Climb back into the opening and make a running jump to the new walkway below. Shoot the hound that waits there [to the west]. Turn left and run to the east side of the room [and take an angled jump around the block]. Pick up the revolver ammo and shoot another hound that comes running. Head to the north and look for the dark entrance to an alcove in the north wall. Activate the reach-in switch to open the gate on the south wall. Continue around to the west and the raised block with the jeweled chain. Pull the chain, which raises a gray block in the SW corner of the room. As you leave the block, shoot a couple of bats that pester Lara.

Now head to the open door in the south wall and Secret #14. Pick up the large medpak, then step onto the left side of the ramp. When the spiked ball falls, quickly run to the right to avoid it. Run up the right side of the ramp a bit to trigger a second spiked ball. Jump to the left so it misses Lara. Now you can safely pick up the small medpak and crossbow explosive ammo.

You can now exit by the door at the top of the ramp [and bag an extra scorpion] or, more easily, the way you came in. If you choose the former route, shoot the hound after you climb down the ladder. Head to the blocks in the SW corner of the room. Climb until you reach the ledge that's level with the central structure and make a running jump W across to it. Climb to the highest block atop this structure. Lara must now make her way back to the switch on the west wall (the one that she left alone earlier). This can be done by using the rope to swing across W and then making a couple of jumps or by going back around the perimeter ledges as before. [To reach the nearer rope, turn around and jump E to the higher sloped ledge.  Turn back around to face W, take a running jump and grab the rope.  Ignore the second rope and simply swing forward and jump off to the W ledge.]

Either way, get Lara to the switch and push it. A flyby shows the central structure filling with sand. Unseen, the gray block obstructing the last switch on the ledge above disappears. Jump to the platform behind, turn and then jump up and grab the ledge above and pull up. Push the final switch to reveal another opening in the east wall of the central structure. From the south end of this ledge, Lara can make a long running jump to the SW corner of the central structure (with the loss of just a bit of health).

Shoot the scorpion running around inside [This is probably the scorpion you may have shot earlier near the spike ball trap. If so, you won't see it here.], then drop in and enter the new opening. Pull the chain to open the gate in the wall opposite and make a running jump/grab to the opening.

SMALL YELLOW LAVA ROOM

As you turn the corner, shoot 2 scorpions and find yourself facing a golden receptacle. To the left of it, pick up the red shotgun shells. Turn and go toward the closed gate and right into a sloping room. Look down the slope to see the spike pit below. Lara will have to run down, chased by 2 spiked balls, and jump over the spike pit to escape. If you stop just on the other side of the spike pit, you can take a moment to plan your next move. A couple steps further and Lara begins to slide toward a lava pit so you’ll have to think fast. Either way you’ll need to arrange a jump down to the gray footpath below to the left.

When you land there, shoot a couple of bothersome bats. Ascend to the platform against the south wall and use the rope to swing over to the landing to the east. Shoot another bat and enter the opening in the wall to find a lever. Push the lever to drop another rope outside. A long running jump should just get you back to the footpath below. Stand below the new rope and jump up to grab it. Use the rope to swing up and into the opening above on the north wall.

SWITCH AND BLOCK PUZZLE

The solution to this puzzle is as follows: Ignore the first lever you see as you enter. Instead climb through an opening in the ceiling up to a upper hallway and follow it to the end. Drop down and pull the chain. This opens the first gate back by the first lever. Go back and, still ignoring the first lever, go past it to find a second lever. Shoot the scorpion that comes around the corner, and then push the second lever. This opens a door back by the chain and lowers a block upstairs.

Return to the upper hallway and make an immediate right into a newly opened passage. Follow it to the end and drop down. Activate the reach-in switch there to open a gate leading back to the first 2 levers. Now return and push the first lever that you have ignored up to now. This opens the next gate in the lower hallway and raises a block closing off the upper hallway. Follow the lower hallway around the corner to the left to reach the next lever. Push the lever to open a second upper hallway back at the beginning.

Return to the starting point and pull up into the new upper hallway on the south side of the opening in the ceiling. Push the fourth lever, which is inside. This opens the last gate in the lower hallway by the chain. Head back there and shoot the scorpion along the way. At the end Lara can pick up the SACRED HOURGLASS. Now make your way back to the lava room and [take a standing] jump to the footpath.

SMALL YELLOW LAVA ROOM

Use the rope again to swing to the landing against the south wall. Below, at the east end of the room is a small gray landing by the wall. Make a running jump to get Lara there. Jump and grab the top of the wall and pull up. Go around the green block to find the receptacle for the SACRED HOURGLASS [in the statue's lap]. Placing it fills the room behind with sand and raises a footpath. 3 demonic hounds also have appeared, so take care of them.

As Lara steps onto the newly raised footpath, look to the left and right to see 2 openings that are now accessible. Enter the opening to the left and carefully WALK toward the back. Spikes will pop up as Lara approaches the corner. Once they have activated it is safe to pass and find CARTOUCHE PIECE #1. Cross the room now and enter the other opening. Poison darts guard this corridor [so crawl past them]. At the end is CARTOUCHE PIECE #2.

Now since a forest of lethal spikes blocks the entrance where you came into this room, Lara will have to find another way out. Look back toward the statue where you placed THE SACRED HOURGLASS. The green block in front of it has disappeared to reveal another lever. Push the lever and a flyby reveals the location of the exit. Make your way there and climb the ladder to the landing above. As you enter the hallway, turn right to see a green block rising to close an opening. Go to the end of the hall and activate the reach-in switch to open a gate above.

Now climb to the upper hallway and activate the reach-in switch there to lower the green block below. Head back down, shooting the scorpion at the bottom of the stairs. Go into the opening where the green block was and find the reach-in switch to open the last gate above. Climb back up, but have a weapon ready to shoot the hound that charges Lara as she turns the corner. Head down the torch lit stairwell and shoot another hound that comes bounding up the stairs [together with another scorpion]. Continue to the bottom and then drop into the hall near the door to the large lava room where you started.

Combine the 2 CARTOUCHE PIECES and place the BA CARTOUCHE in the receptacle to open the gate to the right. Proceed down the newly opened passage. As you approach, another gate ahead opens. To your left is another golden receptacle, to the right an EYE PIECE behind a closed gate. Go ahead to the top of the corridor. The gate closes behind you.

SPIKE BALL ROOM

Notice the ramps coming down from the sides of the room, the first immediately as you enter. Slide or jump into the room as spiked balls come rolling down the first ramps. Quickly approach the second ramps and stop just long enough to let a spiked ball roll past. As soon as it clears the footpath Lara is on run ahead past the second ramp or a spiked ball will flatten you from behind. Without stopping, continue running past the third ramp and the spiked ball should miss Lara there. Approach the last ramp and wait for an opportunity to jump past it when the spiked ball is out of the way. Go through the doorway as the gate shuts behind you.

SLOPING BLOCK AND LAVA ROOM

Ignore the lever for now [as well as the reach-in switch you'll find near the torch] and head past the torch to the back of this small room. Find an opening in the ceiling in the corner and jump to grab the ladder and climb to the next room. Jump and pull up on the raised block directly by the top of the ladder. Facing to the north, angle a running jump to the far sloping block (the one that slants down toward the east). Slide and jump to the next sloping block, then to a third and finally up to level ground. Look left to see the BA CARTOUCHE on a column in the corner of the room. Make a running jump to get it.

When Lara picks up the CARTOUCHE, a flyby shows the room filling with sand. As the flyby ends, the column Lara is standing on collapses. Pull out a weapon to shoot the hound that charges up. Jump over a short sand bank to the west side of the room and shoot the hound and scorpion there. Continue back to the opening in the floor where you entered. Before going down the ladder, jump to the other side of the opening and push the lever there to raise the gate below.

Back down in the small room, activate the reach-in switch and push the lever. This raises two new columns back out in the Spike Ball Room (with levers atop each).

SPIKE BALL ROOM

Walk back through the gate to the Spike Ball Room and stop on the first square. Wait for one more spiked ball to come crashing down in front of Lara. Jump over the hole in the footpath and find the first lever on the column to the left. Make a running jump/grab there and push the lever (NOTE: Lara will have to shimmy to the very outer edge of the column before pulling up in order to be in a position to push the lever). [Take a standing] jump back to the footpath below. Jump over the next hole W, making your way back toward the entrance to the room. Find a second switch atop a column to the right. Make your way up to push the switch and then return to the footpath.

The gate guarding the EYE PIECE in the corridor outside [opposite the cartouche receptacle] is now open. Lara will have to make a long running jump to clear the slope leading back to this passage. Once you have the EYE PIECE in hand, place the BA CARTOUCHE in the nearby receptacle to open the gate in the corner of the small room at the other end of the Spike Ball Room.

Make your way back across the Spike Ball Room to the small room at the other end. As you enter, turn left and find another opening in the ceiling. Climb the ladder to the room above. Make a running jump/grab over the left side of the spike pit ahead. Pull up and immediately drop back and hang from the edge while a spiked ball whizzes over Lara’s head. Pull up and run straight to the top. Pick up another BA CARTOUCHE there. If you don’t want to be chased by another spiked ball, return down the ramp on the same side you came up. Jump the spike pit and notice the lever that has appeared at the bottom.

GOLDEN STAR #1

Push the lever and return one more time over the spike pit and to the top of the ramp. Look for the crawlspace that has opened near the ceiling on the left-hand side and climb in for Secret #15: red shotgun shells and a GOLDEN STAR (NOTE: This star is not a puzzle piece; rather, it is first of eight [scattered throughout the entire Rescue series] that will allow access to a bonus level at the end of the series if all are found). Return to the small room with the torch below and leave by the door in the SE corner.

Place the BA CARTOUCHE in its receptacle to open the gate ahead. Before going through, step into the opening on the right and walk up to the slope. Use your binoculars with night vision (ctrl key) [using the sprint key to zoom in] to look at the pattern at the top of the slope. Memorize the yellow highlighted squares. Lara will need to jump on these squares in this order (starting from the frog square at the bottom) to open the doors in the next room.

ROOM WITH HIEROGLYPH CUTOUTS ON FLOOR

Ignore the lighted squares. To open the 4 gates in this room, Lara need only jump on the 4 squares highlighted with yellow in the diagram, starting with the frog in the first row. Lara must not touch any other square or 1 or more of the doors will close. The squares catch on fire as Lara leaves them, so if you make a mistake have Lara stand on the raised square in the NE corner of the room to reset the puzzle.  [Starting from your left, identify the vertical rows as A, B, etc.  Jump to these squares, starting from C1: E3, C5, A7.  If you hear a thud along the way, you know that you need to start over.  Standing jumps from the corners will get you there safely.]

Once the 4 gates are open, go through each in turn and activate the reach-in switch inside (the order doesn’t matter). The sand door will now creak open, allowing Lara to exit.

ROOM WITH SLICING BLADES

Go through the newly opened sand door and around the corner of the passageway. Don’t run into the room ahead yet or slicing blades will zing down on Lara. Instead, find the opening in the left side of the corridor and activate the reach-in switch. This opens an alcove in the corridor back toward the sand door. Go there and activate another reach-in switch. The slicing blades are now disarmed, so proceed through the room and into the passageway on the other side.

BROWN GRANITE ROOM WITH POLES

First look to the left and notice the black ladder on the wall. The flame at the base makes it impossible for Lara to get there. Lara must make her way to the other end of this room, using the gray platforms to the right and the poles in the center.  Angle a running jump down to the first gray platform below and to the right. Set up a jump and grab to the first pole. Holding onto the pole, turn Lara around so her back is facing toward the next gray platform. Do a back flip on to the second platform. Jump to the next pole, turn Lara’s back to the landing at the end, and back flip to it.

Now climb the ladder to the right and stand on the illuminated hieroglyph. The flame back under the other ladder is now extinguished.  Using the poles again, make your way back to the first gray platform. Jump and grab the higher landing at the east end of the room. Now make a running jump to the bottom of the ladder on the other side. Climb the ladder and move right to land on a platform above.

[For some reason the flame did not go out for me.  If that should happen to you, get back across to the other ladder, using the gray platforms and poles.  Climb up the ladder, turn around and take a running jump, curving to the left to land on a slope above the ladder.  Slide down a bit and jump off with a roll to grab the ladder in the wall.  If you want the revolver ammo, reverse the directions provided below.  Otherwise, climb up a bit, jump off with a roll to grab the ladder in the opposite wall, and make your way up to the opening.]

Turn around to see another ladder opposite. Angle a jump + grab to it [or take a running jump to land in the far front corner] and climb into the opening there for the revolver ammo. Now turn back to face the next ladder on the east wall. Do a running jump and grab the ladder. Move all the way to the right side of the ladder and position Lara about halfway up. Do a rolling back flip and grab the ladder on the wall behind. Move to the far left side of this ladder and do another rolling back flip and grab the ladder on the other wall. Climb up and around the corner into a short hallway. Push the lever to open the gate below, slide down the ramp and enter the now opened doorway at the bottom.

MAZE WITH CAVE PAINTINGS

At the first juncture, go to the left. Notice the closed gate toward the right, but continue straight ahead S. Follow this passage to its end, shooting a hound en route, and stand on the illuminated hieroglyph. The gate you saw before has opened. Return there and pick up the second EYE PIECE. Go around the corner to the passage that parallels this one and push the lever to open a gate in the next branch of the maze (keep an eye out for the hound that was released at the same time).

From the door where you first enter, now go right [north]. At the first juncture, go right and around the corner. Stand on the illuminated hieroglyph. Return to the juncture and follow the tunnel in the other direction. At the next juncture, go right and follow the passage to another illuminated hieroglyph. Step on it, then return to the juncture. Go straight, past the closed gate, and follow the passage to its end. Step on the final hieroglyph to open the gate you just passed by.

Return and go through the now open gateway. Climb the stairs and follow the path to the giant octagonal door. Combine the 2 EYE PIECES and use the EYE OF HORUS to open the door. Run down the passageway ahead to end this level and return to the previous one.

 

PHILAE'S RUINS (cont.)


The small gold statue you saw through the gate some time ago is now before you. Pick up the SANDS STATUE and go through the open gate and to the left. At the end of the tunnel, pull up to find yourself back in the deep pit with the columns. The tunnel entrance at the west end is now open, so make your way there and into the tunnel.

ROOM WITH DEEP CHASM AND FLAMING PLATFORMS

As Lara approaches the next room, a flyby gives us a tour: a deep chasm at the bottom of 2 steep slopes, a ninja patrolling the ledge on the other side, and a WATERS KEY atop a pillar at the south end of the room. The first objective is to lower the iron box that blocks the pillar with the KEY.

Lara will have to use the platforms with the holes on top to make her way to the other side of the room where the ninja is. However, these platforms start emitting flames shortly after Lara steps on them, so move from one to the next as quickly as possible.

Begin by stepping down to the very left side of the platform directly below the doorway you stand in . Immediately turn toward the right and make a running jump to the platform on the LEFT side of the column ahead. As quickly as possible, arrange a running jump to the platform against the north wall. Finally, make a running jump/grab to the landing to the west and pull up on flat ground. [This can be done in one fairly continuous, fluid motion without having to waste time positioning Lara before each jump. Use the left arrow key to pull Lara to the left in mid-air while making the jump to the platform against the north wall.] Pull a weapon and take care of the not-so-aggressive ninja.

Close at hand on the north wall is a button. Push it to lower the iron box guarding the KEY on the platform at the south end of the room. From the landing where you just pulled up, make a running jump + grab back to the platform under the monkey bars. Jump up to grab the monkey bars and swing across to the south end until Lara is hanging over the KEY. Drop down and pick up the WATERS KEY and immediately [before the flames pour through the holes and engulf Lara] jump back up to grab the monkey bars. Turn and swing back to the platform at the north end and jump back to the wide ledge on the west side.

Place the WATERS KEY in its receptacle near the flaming column at the south end of the ledge. The chasm in the middle to the room is now filled with water (and crocodiles). Shoot the reptiles and jump into the water. Swim to an opening below and to the left of the pillar [S wall] where you picked up the KEY. Swim in and to the right. Near the end of the short tunnel and on the left, is a narrow gap. Swim in and pick Uzi clips. Swim back out and around the corner [through the narrow opening] to pick up some more Uzi clips. Swim back out to the main room. As you exit the tunnel swim up and right to find an opening [in the south wall, near the east corner] at the water’s edge. Climb out and push the button at the end of the corridor.

The button has opened a gate in a corridor directly opposite this one on the north wall. Make your way there and climb out of the water. When you reach the end of the corridor, make long running jump over the lava pit to the slope beyond. Slide and jump over some more lava to the next slope, and make one final jump to clear the flame emitters. Push the button to start a small tremor that reshapes the room.

Climb up to the right, run ahead and climb up again to find the second SANDS STATUE. Now make a little detour for some goodies and a secret. Jump across to the ledge below the entrance. Turn and locate another flat area just to the west. [Light a flare so you can see.] Jump over to it. Now jump and grab the crawl space above in the west wall. Crawl in and turn right at the first juncture to pick up Uzi clips. Turn and crawl the other way to the end of the crawlspace.

Climb over and up the blocks ahead to reach the long gallery with the sun roof. Pick up the large medpak + blue shotgun shells from the pedestals at the far end. Climb back down and find another crawl space at the base of the east wall in the dark gray stone. Crawl in and turn directly right to find Secret #16. When Lara can stand up, climb up on the block to her left. Jump over the flame to the other [NW] corner of the room and pick up the red shotgun shells. Now, facing east, make a running jump to the floor of the room, avoiding the flames.

Climb the block in the NE corner and push the button to lower the iron box across the way. Jump over and enter another narrow galleria. About halfway through it, look up to the right for an opening in the wall above. Jump up to the opening, crawl through and drop to the ground on the other side. [Lara will pull up, attempt to stand and fall back down into the narrow galleria.  I was finally able to keep her in a crouched position and crawl forward, but I couldn't duplicate this move on later attempts.]  Pick up the red shotgun shells and draw a weapon to take care of the ninja that emerges from behind the palm tree. Climb back through the hole to the narrow galleria. Continue to its end and pick up the crossbow explosive ammo.

Now make your way all the way back to the large flooded room where you began. [Do this by turning around and running to the end of the galleria. Turn around and drop down to the block. Jump down to the floor and carefully walk over to the block near the SW corner. Side step in front of the flames to its left side and pull up to the top. Drop down the other side into the hole in the SW corner. Go through the crawl space and turn left. In the adjacent room, face north and pull up onto the block to the left. Jump straight ahead to the crawl space. Crawl in and make an immediate right, then wind your way to the opening. Turn around, drop down to the slope and slide to the bottom. Face slightly NE and take a standing jump over the flames toward the button you pushed earlier. Turn to the right, climb up on the block, run forward and climb up onto the next block. Turn right and take a running jump to the floor. Zig to the right and take a standing jump over the slope into the tunnel leading back to the pool.] Climb out of the water [in the opening in the east wall] where you entered this room and return to the deep pit with the red-patterned columns.

Use the columns to climb back to the area with first deep pit. Shoot a scorpion and jump over the pit, and return to the starting room via the stairs and the water tunnel.

ROOM WITH RED-PATTERNED COLUMNS

Two seated statues flank the door in the north wall. Place a SANDS STATUE in the niche on the back of each one to open the door. Inside to the left, behind the newly opened door is a box of red shotgun shells. When Lara picks them up, a scorpion will sneak up from behind.. At the bottom of the short set of stairs is a button on the wall. Push it to open the adjacent door. Look to the top of the short stairs here to see a large vase. Shoot it and collect the crossbow normal ammo hidden inside.

ROOM WITH SMALL POOL AND SEATED STATUE

Head through the door the button opened. To the left, across an empty pool, a ninja will start blasting Lara with his Uzi. Blast him back and pick up the uzi ammo he drops, then the nearby small medpak. Notice the door in the east wall, as well as the statue niche guarded by the flame emitters. Lara has a bit of work to do to open this door. Pick up the flares in the shallow depression to the right of the large staircase (NE). To the left, grab the UZI between the two columns.

HALLWAY WITH SMALL LAVA PIT

Now head up the stairs and climb the block at the top. Keep climbing to the top of the long ladder and then head around the corner of the short corridor at the top. Jump the small lava pit and find the ladder to the left. At the top of the ladder, crawl in to the narrow gap, turn, and drop down in a narrow cubby on the other side for Secret #17: red shotgun shells + Uzi clips. Climb back into the narrow gap at the top. This time crawl out in the direction of the lava pit. With Lara hanging from the side of the column [top right corner], do a back flip with a roll and grab the cranny in the wall behind. Shimmy to the left [and around the corner] until Lara can crawl into the gap. Drop to the other side and push the button at the bottom of the stairs. Return to the room far below with the empty pool [remembering that there's a long climb down that ladder at the end of the tunnel].

ROOM WITH SMALL POOL AND SEATED STATUE

The small pool is now filled with water. Jump in and pick up the revolver ammo on the bottom. Swim to face the underwater door and use the action key to open it. (NOTE: The button on the wall of the pool was used only if Lara falls or drops into the pool when it is empty. It raises a block to allow her to climb out). Swim through the short tunnel and emerge in a room with a burning pedestal.

ROOM WITH BURNING PEDESTAL

In the SW corner, look through a small gap to see a vase. Shoot it. Climb the short block that was to Lara’s left as she came out of the water. Jump and grab the edge above [facing W] and pull up into a short corridor. Around the corner and straight ahead is a gap at the top of the wall (notice the closed gate to the left). Climb in and drop and hang off the other side. Shimmy all the way right, then drop and shoot a second vase on the small landing. Drop back down through the opening at hand to the room below.

Repeat the climb back to the crawlspace above. This time shimmy just around the corner and pull up into the gap. Drop on the other side and shoot a third vase in a shallow hole in the corner. Notice the small opening high in the wall to the west. It is blocked by a gate.

Use the crawl space to return to the upper corridor. The gate is now open. At the end of the corridor is a button. Push it to open a door in the room below. Head back down and through the open doorway in the SE corner. Activate the reach-in switch to open the other gate upstairs where you shot the third vase. Return there, climb into the gap, turn and drop down to the next room.

Jump into the pool and pick up the GARDEN’S KEY on the bottom. Now swim through the small hole in the north wall of the pool. Turn right and swim through another narrow breach and around the corner to pick up the WATER’S KEY. Return the way you came. On the floor under the opening back to the pool, pick up the crossbow explosive ammo. Get some air out in the pool. Now swim back through the hole and turn left. Follow the tunnel past a few turns to its end.

ROOM WITH RED-PATTERNED PILLARS AND ROPE

[Pull out and make your way to the N wall.  Turn left into the alcove and step on a trigger tile to make a rope appear in the next room.] Arrange a running jump E across and to a flat spot to the right of the small lava pit [using a midair curve to the right]. Pull a weapon to take care of the ninja that charges around the corner. Find the ladder and climb it to the landing above. Walk to the end and turn east to see a small landing near the north wall with a button. Make a running jump there and push the button to open the door high on the south wall. Jump back to the landing at the top of the ladder.

Now facing east, jump [past the rope] to the pillar with the column on top. Jump across to the next pillar to the east. Drop down N into the alcove below and place the WATERS KEY in its receptacle. Climb back out and return to the landing above the ladder. Along the way, a cut scene shows the fire has been extinguished in front of the statue niche back by the small pool. Now to find the statue.

Jump and grab the rope and use it to swing up to the landing under the door high in the south wall. Climb out and pick up the crossbow explosive ammo on the pedestal to the right, triggering the other door in the room to open. Go through the doorway (if you step on the red sand in the middle, a scorpion will appear).

LONG SLIDE WITH LAVA PITS

Lara must now slide down a series of chutes, jumping 3 lava pits along the way. Try to make your jumps as close as possible to the edge of each pit in order to clear it. Once you reach the bottom safely, climb up and run back along the ledge against the east wall to pick up the revolver ammo. Look out the second window to see the grenade gun in the distance. Lara can’t reach it just yet. Now look up and take note of the button high on the west wall of the room. You’ll return here later. For now, exit through the doorway in the SE corner.

COURTYARD WITH OBELISKS AND GOLD STATUE

Around the corner, look across the lava pit to see the GOLD STATUE on a pedestal in the distance. There’s no way to reach it yet, so head through the opening in the sand bank to the south and find the open pool. Jump in and pick up the revolver ammo and grenade gun normal ammo at the bottom. Swim into the tunnel heading east. At the juncture, look left and notice the closed door, then swim up and to the right until you reach a dark underwater door on the right side of the tunnel. Open the door and swim into the next channel, making the first left toward an iron gate which opens as Lara approaches.

ROOMS REACHED BY WATER TUNNELS

Climb out of the pool SW and shoot the scorpion that approaches. Then shoot the vases on both sides of the room and pick up blue shotgun shells and Uzi clips. Find the button on the pillar under the window [behind the column near the SW corner] and push it to open the door back toward the beginning of the water tunnel. Return there and climb out. [Swim into the tunnel and turn right at the juncture. Turn left at the bend and turn downward into the hole at the end. At the bottom keep swimming straight ahead (north) through the open door and up until you reach the air hole.] Take note of the patter of crocodile feet behind the iron gates. Push the button between the 2 iron gates to raise an iron box back in the room you just came from. Swim back there.

Climb the short pillar at the back of the room and angle a running jump/grab to the pillar under the window. Jump to the iron box, then make a running jump with grab to the fissure in the wall ahead. Shimmy right until Lara can pull up into the opening. Drop into the depression below and look left for a dark opening. Climb up into it and pick up the Uzi clips around the corner. Now head the other direction and down the stairs to the water opening. Swim to the end of the channel and emerge on a balcony. Push the button to open the door above the small pillar back in the main room.

GOLDEN STAR #2

Return to the main room. Before entering the open doorway, Lara will have to find a way to open another door inside that room. Jump in the pool and swim back N past the iron gate. Go left and past an underwater door on the right, then up to exit the tunnel. Climb the blocks ahead and push the button to open the other door. Drop to the block below. Instead of heading back to the water tunnel you just came from, make a running jump over it and the sand bank ahead [from where you now stand] to land in another opening. Swim to the end and up through the opening. Climb the blocks up to the ledge to find Secret #18: small medpak + crossbow explosive ammo + GOLDEN STAR #2.

Return, using the underwater door to exit this tunnel [turn left at the intersection, then take an immediate right] and make your way back to the main room. Climb up to the open doorway above the short pillar and push the button at the end of the room. Draw a weapon to take care of the ninja that charges into the room. That done, head back out to the main room. (NOTE: The small water opening only leads to a closed door now. Also, take note of the button blocked by the iron box).

Outside in the main room, notice the iron box which has risen in the middle. Drop to the short pillar below the doorway and make a running jump/grab to the iron box. Look to see the other door high on the wall is open now. Jump to the red patterned pillar against the east wall, and then arrange a running jump/grab to the other open doorway [to the south]. Inside, cross the boardwalk and push the button at the back of the room. The boardwalk collapses to reveal a lava pit. Arrange a running jump over it and to the platform on the right or left. Don’t stay too long on the platform, as it will soon burst into flames.

Outside in the main room, another iron box has risen between the columns by the east wall. Angle a running jump/grab to the first column, then use the iron box to cross to the next. Activate the reach-in switch to open the 2 iron gates back in the room at the other end of the water tunnel. Swim back there and be prepared to tangle with the crocodile that is now free. Once he’s dealt with, push the button on the back side of the column between the two gates. A flyby shows iron boxes have been raised in the lava pit outside, and the GOLD STATUE can now be reached.

COURTYARD WITH OBELISKS AND GOLD STATUE

Return by the water tunnel to the courtyard and use the iron boxes to jump across and retrieve the GOLD STATUE. Pick up the Uzi clips in the corner. Now head back over to the doorway where you originally entered this area (to the room with the long slide and lava pits). A column now stands below that button high on the wall [to your left in the dark area as you climb up onto the block]. Climb up and push it, then return to the courtyard. Along the way, you’ll hear an explosion. Around the corner to the left, Lara can go through a new opening [drop down into a sandy area with a couple of palm trees and streaked designs on the floor] and pick up Secret #19: small medpak + GRENADE GUN. After retrieving them, head back to the pool leading to the water tunnels. [An iron box rises behind you, preventing re-entry to this area.]

This time, take the other tunnel (leading to the south). Not far along, keep an eye out for an underwater door on the right. Behind it lies Secret #20: a large medpak. After picking it up, continue down the water tunnel [swimming over the opened door]. As Lara approaches the corner a crocodile attacks. Get past it as well as you can, and swim to the end of the tunnel to emerge back in the first room of the level (the iron gate opens as you approach). If you like, wait for the crocodile to surface and blast it. [Go through the open door to the north, turn right at the ramp facing the room beyond and vault up into the next room. Turn left and locate the niche behind the statue.] Go and place the GOLD STATUE in its niche to open the adjacent door.

OUTSIDE NEAR THE GRAY STONE STRUCTURE

Head outside through the open doorway [and slide down the ramp]. As Lara turns the corner by the gray stone structure, a ninja awaits. Shoot him and pick up the Uzi clips [unless the ninja picked them up before you shot him]. Follow the footpath around the perimeter to the other side of the structure. At the end of the path, drop into a shallow well and push the button to open a gate inside the structure. Return down the footpath. Near the wall of the structure [when you turn the corner at the end of the path and are facing to the SW] climb the slope near the palm tree. A couple of jumps will put Lara on a ledge near the outer wall above. Make your way behind a second tree and around to the flat shelf near the east wall. Pick up the revolver ammo there.

Slide down to the pillar with the green tiles on top near the wall of the structure.  Jump from the pillar to the top of the wall. [Or access the wall directly by taking a back flip to the slope behind you, jump off and grab the edge of the wall and pull up.]  At the NW end of the wall, find the blue shotgun shells. [Hop down SE], climb down into the structure and follow the tunnel underground. Climb out of the tunnel, then ascend the ladder to emerge in an area with blue-trimmed walls.

AREA WITH BLUE-TRIMMED WALLS AND WATER OPENING

Follow the footpath around the corner and until you reach a small slope, Jump the slope and push the button in the well behind. This opens a door in the adjacent courtyard, so jump back over the short slope and head S to the open doorway. In a dark area on the left wall of the room is another button, Push it to open a door in the water tunnel outside. Notice the door in the shadows at the end of the boardwalk.

Jump in the water and follow the passage to another opening. Climb out into a room you should recognize from before. Lara can now push the button [directly opposite the pool she just emerged from] that was previously blocked by the iron box. This opens the door back in the room off the [previous] courtyard. Head back there and through the open doorway [past the boardwalk].

LARGE POOL BENEATH RAMPARTS

Run down to the water’s edge. The body of water ahead is divided into three pools by rock outcroppings. Once Lara jumps in, there’s no turning back. Slide into the water as a crocodile appears. Swim left under the rock outcropping then right to find a flat spot where Lara can climb out at the pool’s end. Turn and shoot the reptile. Now jump to the steep sand dune to the north, slide back and grab the edge above the water. Shimmy all the way left until Lara can climb out on flat ground and pick up the red shotgun shells.

If another crocodile is circling below, shoot it now. Otherwise, jump back in the water and head through the center pool and into the third pool to the south. Turn right and find the ledge at the west end to climb out on. Shoot the second crocodile if you haven’t before. Jump to the rock outcropping over the pool to the north. Slide back and grab the edge over the water and shimmy all the way to the right where Lara can climb out and grab some Uzi clips.

Jump back in the water and swim into the center pool. Swim up under the rock outcropping at the east end and climb out.  Run down the corridor ahead to finish the level.
