GREEK TREASURE HUNT

After the opening flyby, shoot the crates in the area, as two of them hide uzi ammo and a small medipack. Hop NE over the railing to find flares on a table. Head under a NW archway past a shallow pool and loop around left into an opening between two merchant stands. Shoot the box around the corner for more flares and pull up three times to an upper room. Shoot the jars and push the wall button to open the door around the corner. Step out onto a balcony and look for a gap in the railing on the other (N) side. You can reach the gap from here with a running jump and grab, so do that and shoot the large jug against the far wall for uzi ammo.

 

From the gap, take a running jump SE into a niche, followed by another running jump NE to a balcony. Continue with a final running jump to the SE niche and pick up the SNAKE GODDESS for SECRET #1. Grab 2 x shotgun ammo before dropping to the alley below. Run W and turn right up the N ramp into a courtyard. Continue up the steps into an enclosed area and move the table underneath the opening in the E wall. Jump to grab the opening, pull into an upper room and shoot a couple of rats. One of the boxes hides an ambrosia (nectar of the gods), which I'll refer to hereafter as a large medipack for simplicity's sake.

 

Go downstairs, loop around and open the door to an outside courtyard. Look left to see a door blocked by three wooden bars and continue S past a cart. Hop over the short fence into an alley. At the W end is a nose handle you can pull a few times to remove one of those wooden bars you saw. Hop back over the fence, loop around left and use the table to pull up W into a passage. Climb down the vines at the other end to find another nose handle that removes another of those wooden bars. Run past the vines and up the steps to open a door to a lounge where a couple is watching something on the television.

 

Take the large medipack from the bookshelf, open the NE door and step out into a courtyard where you'll be greeted by a friendly cat. Find and pull the nose handle to remove the last of the wooden bars and go down the nearby steps into a familiar courtyard. Turn left, return to the pushpiece and jump to grab the opening in the E wall. Pull inside, go downstairs and out to the lower courtyard, turn left and open the E door. Go up the steps to a courtyard with a central plinth, continue into the next courtyard and search the sarcophagus on the right for the MAGNUM and the one on the left for the LASER SIGHT. Combine the two and note the closed E gate.

 

Return to the central plinth in the other courtyard, look up E and shoot the gem in the lion's mouth to cause the VERY ANCIENT SCROLL to appear on the plinth. When you pick it up you hear the sound of what seems to be a door opening, but actually handles are being added to the wall switches in the N and S alcoves so that they become operable. Examine the scroll for a clue of sorts for your later use. Go to the N alcove, pull the switch there down, up and down again, then go to the S alcove and pull the switch there down and back up. The E gate should now be open, so go there to a floor hole and jump over N for a small medipack. Jump back and use the ladder to climb down and drop into a cave.

 

Go through the S opening. The next opening to your right is for later, so continue E to an outdoor area and stay right to shoot some jars for shotgun ammo. Continue around this area, following the wall past a nook with empty boxes, until you reach a building and shoot the box for a small medipack. Go to the edge of the waterfall, look down and take a long dive into the pool below. Pull out, listen for the disconcerting sound of heavy breathing close by, light a flare and go to the NW corner for uzi ammo and a tightly timed wall switch that raises a block on the other side of the pool. Run there, hop onto the raised block and continue with a running jump into the opening in the S wall. Save in a different slot when you get there successfully and take the SNAKE GODDESS from the small table for SECRET #2 and don't forget the large medipack on the larger table.

 

Return to the pool area and open the NE door. Enter a dark room and open the floor trap door to your left. Drop down into a passage, shoot a bunch of rats and kick open the panel in the W wall. Shoot more rats, pick up the shotgun ammo in the NE corner and shoot the boxes on the other side of the room to get them out of your way. Push the face button, exit to the passage, turn right and pull up past the opened trap door. Jump S to grab the vines near the doorway and climb up to a ledge overlooking the pool room. Take a running jump slightly SW to land on the right side of an archway. Run past the apex of the archway and hop down right for uzi ammo.

 

At the far end of the archway note the vine ladder and jump SE over the railing. Shoot the jars for flares, search the sarcophagus for a large medipack and shoot the crow that appears. Go through the crawl space, open the door and grab the small medipack from the table. Note the S door, but for a pickup go out onto the balcony and jump SW over the railing. Go clockwise around the outer ledge and find another small medipack in the plant stand. Return the way you came, open the S door and go downstairs to another closed door. Kick it open and come to a courtyard. Go through the W passage to another courtyard and push the face button to open the E door in the previous courtyard.

 

Return there, enter a small room and take shotgun ammo from the table to your left. Grab the flares at the SE corner and search the cabinet for PERSEUS' SWORD. Return to the courtyard and loop around left up the steps to the W crawl space and jump over the balcony railing to the archway. Go to the other side and use the sword as a crowbar in the floor switch to retract spikes protecting a plinth. Go the S end of the archway and use the vine ladder to climb the W wall. Shift left to the corner, and when Lara's head and shoulders are above the jutting ledge behind her you can safely back flip onto it. Turn around and make your way around the ledge to the plinth you saw in the cut scene and grab the OLD RUSTY KEY. A crow will eventually show up, so deal with it.

 

The easiest way back down is simply to dive into the pool below. Pull out, go W up the steps and open the gate with the key. The gate closes behind you as you enter the next room, Shoot the jars for flares and pull up N into a vine-covered opening. Turn around to see a blade trap above you. Pull up S and time a roll past the moving blade. On the other side of this room are two plinths bearing the UZIS and a SNAKE GODDESS for SECRET #3. Roll under the blade and drop down to the room below. Push the button in the niche between the two statues to release a trap door and drop you down into a body of water.

 

Swim W into an underwater temple area, loop around left into an opening and light a flare so you can get safely past a spear trap in the passage ahead. Swim up the shaft at the end of the passage, surface and pull out into a partially flooded room. Go around to the N side of the central structure and look up at it to see a lion's head. Shoot the gem in its mouth, go around to the S side and do the same with the lion's head there. A block comes out from the E wall, so climb it and hop onto the higher jutting ledge. Use the swingpole to get over to the jutting ledge across the room and face NE.

 

When the platform comes out from the wall, hop onto it and continue with a running jump into the alcove in the N wall. Pull the RED GARNET from the lion's mouth to retract the platform you're standing on and drop you to the shallow water below. Wade over to the SW floor hole, light a flare and save your game for a timed underwater exercise. After making sure you have maximum health, hop in, swim down and past the spear trap into the underwater temple area and continue into the W opening. Place the Red Garnet in the statue's heart to open the trap door beneath you. Swim down the stairwell, kick open the barrier at the end and for a secret (if you think you have sufficient air) turn left in the next room to kick open another barrier in the wall. Swim inside for a SNAKE GODDESS and SECRET #4, flip turn, swim out and up left to find a timed ceiling switch.

 

Pull the switch and beat a hasty retreat up the stairwell, exit the temple E, swim straight up and past the timed trap door before it closes. Pull out into a room with closed gates and wall switches with Roman numerals over each of them.

 

V GATE

 

Pull down the II and III wall switches to open the V gate behind you. Go there and up the steps to a ledge overlooking a room below. Safety drop from the ledge, shoot a couple of rats (that may be stuck in walls) and find the SHOTGUN on a nearby plinth. Continue into a room with rotating flame blowers and hop into the central pit. Pull down the W wall switch to raise a block, hop out of the pit and onto the raised block, close to the wall where the flames can't reach you. Face SE, save your game and time a running jump to grab the swingpole, swing around and immediately jump off to land on an upper ledge.

 

The jars here are empty, so exit N and time your way past two swinging axes to a wall switch. When you pull it down you're treated to a cut scene of an unfortunate prisoner who has magically appeared in the puzzle room. Go back past the swinging axes, time a jump down past the rotating flames and exit E. Go up the steps and back to the room with the Roman numerals where you see the sword-wielding prisoner who bears a striking resemblance to Duke Nukem. Pull down the I wall switch (leaving the other two in the down position) and the VI gate opens in the N wall.

 

VI GATE

 

Go up the steps (of course, the gate closes behind you) and locate a vine ladder on the other side of the ledge ahead. Climb down, using Lara's funky climbing animation, and drop onto a rock ledge from which you can shoot the lion below in complete safety. Hop down, go through the N entrance, shoot another lion, turn left and come to a crossing. Take the right (N) path into an area guarded by a hammergod. For some reason if you go to the nearby fountain pond and stoop in the shallow water, you won't take damage while the hammergod continually whacks the ground with his hammer. From this position you can fire at him with your pistols until he dies. Not very sporting, but effective.

 

Find the vine ladder near the NE corner, climb up past the ledge, shift right and drop down. Make your way W with careful jumps (because of the low ceiling), using the swingpole (accessed by a standing jump) to reach the NW corner. Go across the archway, stand jump to the swingpole and continue with careful jumps to the SW corner, enter the crawl space and go around the corner for shotgun ammo. Return to the SW corner, push the large jar N over the ledge and follow down after it. The jar smashes into tiny pieces as it hits the ground, leaving behind the SWITCH HANDLE.

 

Exit S, continue to the wall and place the handle in the receptacle. Save your game for a timed exercise, pull down the wall switch to bring two blocks out from the W wall and use them to reach the upper ledge (side flips will get you there more quickly). Reverse roll when you get there, run E to the raised block and use it with a running jump to reach the timed platform jutting from the wall. Pull up onto a higher ledge, shoot some jars for shotgun ammo and pull down the S wall switch between the openings for a cut scene of the puzzle room. Safety drop to the lower ledge, from there to the floor, enter the S cavern area and locate the vine ladder.

 

IV GATE

 

Climb back up to the veranda, return to the puzzle room and push the II wall switch back up. The IV gate opens, so go there and up the steps to trigger a formidable spear trap. Making your way along the hazardous floor is not easy, and along the way you'll encounter swords dropping seemingly at random from the ceiling, so save your game before starting. There may be more than one way to do this, but this way works: Go around to the E wall, face S and wait patiently for the spears directly in front of you to retract. Run forward two squares, turn right, and when the next spears retract run W two squares, wait a second until the spears ahead retract and go W one more square. A sword will fall. Turn left, wait for the next spears to retract, walk one square S, two squares left (E) and another sword will fall after the first square. Then one square to the S wall (a sword drops), turn right and follow along the wall to a switch where you can save in a separate slot and relax for a minute.

 

Pull down the switch to open the exit gate, face E, wait for the spears directly ahead to retract and quickly loop around right with the sprint key past the opened gate (for me this was the trickiest part of all). Shoot a couple of rats in the next room and pull down the W wall switch for another cut scene of the puzzle room. The spear room is now safe except for any ceiling swords you haven't yet triggered, so return there and go to the SW alcove for a large medipack. Exit N to the puzzle room and find that the purported prisoner has come to life and is now your avowed enemy. The knight is more difficult to kill than you'd expect, and once he's out of the way a centaur will materialize. It explodes with spectacular gusto when it dies.

 

The E gate is open, so enter the next room, hop onto the wooden ledge and face W with your back to the wall. Jump up to open the ceiling trap door and pull up to the higher room. Go through the W opening, hop down to a lower ledge and go left toward an enclosed lounge area. Jump over the railing and search the table for 2 x magnum ammo. Continue clockwise along the ledge and come to a W side room with a floor lever that when pushed causes a sound like the opening of a squeaky gate. Your next stop along the ledge is a row of jugs above a grate that hide 2 x shotgun ammo. Drop down into the former puzzle room, where two skeletons have come to life. Either shoot their heads off with the magnum or use the shotgun to blast them into the central pit.

 

The W gate is now open, so enter the dark room and pick up the glowing ORNATE BRONZE KEY. Shoot two rats on your way out and go across into the E side room. Pull up through the trap door, go up the S steps and use your newfound key to open the door to a hallway. Follow the red carpet, shoot a lion and safety drop to a lower room. Pull down the S wall switch to open the door behind you and step out onto the veranda to face your next challenge. Your task is to shoot out the eyes of the medusa that has appeared in the puzzle room pit, using the combined magnum and laser sight. When you succeed before getting yourself fried, a gate opens in a nearby room. Hop NE over the railing and follow the ledge to the E opening where you'll find the opened gate.

 

Follow through into the spear trap room, continue past the SE gate and turn left, then right to come to a floor hole lined with spears. Hop around the corner and sprint up the ramp as a boulder is released ahead. Take refuge in the corridor to your right and go around the corner to trigger a flurry of bats. Stoop until they fly away, then for a secret walk back the ramp to find that the boulder has caused the spears to retract. Hop down, enter the S alcove and pull up for a SNAKE GODDESS and SECRET #5. Also grab the uzi ammo, then return to where you triggered the bats. Walk toward a ledge overlooking a deep room and take a running jump over the gap and through the green light to grab the E opening.

 

Pull up and follow the passage to a crossing. Ignore for now the wall switch to your left and go up the winding steps to your right. Shoot the boxes for uzi ammo and use Perseus' Sword to open the crowbar door. Go across the room, open the N doors and step out into an open-air room. Shoot the box in the SE alcove for more UZIS and the box in the SW alcove for uzi ammo. Exit and go back down the winding steps. Pull down the wall switch you ignored earlier and go past the opened gate into a familiar courtyard and go down the E passage to trigger two cut scenes, one of something exploding and the other of a closed gate. Continue to the courtyard with a large tree, turn right past the opened S door and go up the steps to a balcony you visited earlier.

 

Continue N past the opened door and under the crawl space, jump over the railing onto the archway and climb the W vine ladder as you did before. Back flip onto the ledge, but this time turn slightly right and take a running jump NW onto the ledge ahead. Climb the vine ladder on the N side of the ledge, enjoy the nice camera view as you ascend and pull up at the waterfall. There's nothing to find or do in the immediate area, so run forward under the archway and continue W through the dark passage. Turn left at the crossing, and when you reach the wall turn around to see a vine ladder. Climb up until you enter a ceiling shaft, then shift right around the corner and continue climbing until you can pull up in front of a closed gate.

 

Us the Ornate Bronze Key to open it and time your way past three spear traps without falling into the fire pits directly beyond the first two (standing jumps with grab can be helpful here). Continue past the slope on your right into a room with five receptacles. Place a Snake Goddess in each one and your reward for finding all secrets, ZEUS' THUNDERBOLT, appears on the central platform. Return to the slope, stand left and save your game. You need to avoid the lava by using precise jumps onto the rock slabs ahead. Slide and jump at the last moment with a left curve onto the first slab, jump with grab to clear the low ceiling and jump immediately off the next slab to land safely on a ledge.

 

Turn to face SE, hop with grab (to clear the ceiling) onto the slope, slide and grab and shimmy right to the corner, pull up and jump SW onto the ledge. Hop up E onto the triangular ledge and see the source of all that heavy breathing you might have heard earlier. Continue forward and the gate will open to unleash a hammergod. When he is vanquished the next gate E opens, but first shoot some jars for shotgun ammo. Run past the flaming dragon statues and pause for a small medipack around the corner. Time your way past the next flaming dragon, continue S and take the large medipack from the plinth.

 

The gate to your left opens, so enter a pool room where a hydra comes to life. Continuous pistol fire will prevent it from mounting an attack against you. It will eventually disintegrate and the E gate behind it will open. Shoot the alcove jars in this room for shotgun ammo and a small medipack, continue into the next room with a translucent floor and take an unidentified object from the plinth to end the level. Hit the escape key for a nice flyby sequence while the end credits roll.
