QUALOPEC'S CURSE - A BAD DREAM

Level by Christian Schook / Schookbaer

Unauthorised walkthrough by Monika Pietsch

This is the walkthrough for the first version of “A Bad Dream.”

In the revised version the author has made some changes.

The most obvious ones are: the shortcut has gone, wolves appear, the rotating blades have more speed, an additional room is to visit and the breakable tiles near the end have been exchanged with transparent ones.

I think this walkthrough can be a guideline for both versions.

Note from Moderator:  For those who prefer additional detail, an alternate walkthrough (for the revised edition, where there are substantial differences near the end) by Phil Lambeth follows this one.

The start is like in TRI, but it changes very soon.

Avoid the poisonous darts the best you can. When you come to the corner go and pick up some wideshot ammo in a niche. Go straight ahead and in the niche in the far corner there you find shotgun ammo, flares and a SECRET.

You have to watch out for bats. Return to where Lara looks up. Climb up and go to the left side. Climb into the opening on the right side and you will find the SHOTGUN, shotgun ammo and a SECRET.

You come to a round closed door. On the right side in the dark is a switch to open it.

Go on into the next area. Watch the camera flyby. You see a bridge, a central structure, a double red door on the right and a red door higher up on the left.

(Shortcut to finish the level, but not advisable: If you make your way up to the central structure and you jump over the rim, you will land in a green underwater cavern. First swim straight ahead to find an underwater lever, which will open a metal door on the side. Swim there and at the end you come to a switch. When you pull it, you can hear a rumble. Swim back and through an opening just underneath where you came down. At the end there is a switch and a metal door. Go through and you’re right back at the start.)

When you walk into the water and swim to the left you find an underwater lever. This will open the double red door. A giant scorpion is lurking in there. Kill it from the block and enter the room. There is a movable block on the left side. Push it forward and to the side. Pull another one once. To get by you have to jump in the corner. Then push another block. Again use the corner and Lara will be able to enter the passage. Pull a switch. Then climb up the ladder. From the slope jump grab the climbable wall ahead. Climb up and get off on the left side. There is a SECRET. Climb down a ladder and you will find the GOLDEN KEY. Afterwards make your way up and out. A skeleton will greet you. Eliminate it.

Now make your way to an opening on the right side. Pick up the wideshot ammo on the way. Go to the other side with a running jump. Pass 2 swinging blades. Pull a switch and enter the next room. Drop down to get some shotgun ammo.

Climb up and make your way to the opening around the corner avoiding the rotating blades. Kill the bats and a scorpion. Jump through the slicing knife. Push a switch. This should stop the waterfall, drain the water surrounding the central structure and stabilise the ledge when you leave after the red door (near the end).

Use the Golden Key and get 2 large medi-packs. Slide down and go towards the waterhole in front of the double door.
In a corner near the small water opening is a switch. Pull it to open an underwater door. Get into the water and swim against the current. It takes the all the air and some health to get to the other side. You come into a cave / big room with snow. Jump over to the next ledge. Eliminate a skeleton. On the other side of the block is a switch. Pull it and a metal door will open. Now jump back over to the entrance. Near to the entrance use a crevice and around the corner drop and hurry to the left to get over a breakable tile. Eliminate a skeleton. Go up the stairs and you come to the door you just opened.

Eliminate another skeleton. Use the monkey bar to get over to the ledge on the left.
In the room below you find a small medi-pack, flares and the BRONCE KEY.

Slide out of the room. Jump into the water and get a small medi-pack. Climb onto the icy ledge on the right side. Eliminate a skeleton and take the wideshot ammo. Climb up and use the ladder. Up on the ledges you will meet 2 skeletons. Get rid of them.

Jump over to the last ledge and jump to the snowy right side to get a small medi-pack.
Jump back to the ledge and there grab the green monkey bar and swing over to the other side. Go down a few steps and jump over (or use the monkey bar) to the metal door. Use the Bronce Key to open the door. Slide down. Watch a camera flyby.

You enter into a watery area with a wooden bridge and a red door.

You have to find several (5) switches before the red door opens.

Swim straight ahead, climb out and pull a switch (shows door).

Turn to the west side. On the left there is shotgun ammo and on the right is an underwater lever (shows door).

On the on east side there is an underwater passage and at the end climb out and pull a switch (shows door).

Now swim to the northwest side. There you can climb up on to a block. Jump to the block in the water and from the block to the ledge on the left side. Move the movable blocks till you have found a SECRET and Uzi ammo. Then move another block to find a switch. Pull it (shows door) and it also opens the metal door next to you. Jump from the block in the water to the green climbable wall. Transverse and walk up to the left. When you slide down jump and grab to avoid the deadly spikes. You come to the bridge. There is a crevice on the right side. Grab it and transverse to the left. You come to a switch. Pull it and it shows a metal door underwater. Drop into the water. Search the water for some more wideshot ammo and then go through the underwater door. You end up in a bath and find a switch. Pull it (shows door). If this was your fifth switch you will see the red door opening.

Make your way back to the bridge, cross it and go through the red door.

Jump into the water. Use the entrance where wide the metal door is. Swim to the left and use the underwater lever on the left side and pick um some Uzi ammo and return.

Swim through where the wide metal door was.
You have to eliminate a skeleton. Push a switch and pick up some Uzi ammo.

Swim on till you come to another basin one level higher up. Jump over to a switch. Pull it and you see a picture of a metal door.

Use the monkey bar over to the switch. This opens a metal door in the water. Go down and get a SECRET and the UZI.

Now use the green monkey bar to cross to the other side. You have to eliminate 2 skeletons. Take the RED KEY. Push a switch, which opens a metal door. Use the green and then brown monkey bar till you come to an opening on the right.

Bats are pestering you but you have to go on till you can get of the monkey bar. After having killed the bats jump back up to the monkey bar and swing on.

Drop and jump over the spikes and towards the right. There is a flat spot there. From there you can get a SECRET and plenty of Uzi ammo.

Now slide down and take care of 2 giant scorpions. You can try and get onto a block and kill them from safety. You are back almost where you began the level. Climb up and you meet 2 more giant scorpions. When you are back in the area with the bridge and the central structure go to the left and make your way to the red door. Eliminate a skeleton. Pick up some shotgun ammo. Use the Red Key to open the door.

A spiky boulder will fall into a pit. You come to an opening with a slide. When you slide forward you will fall onto breakable tiles. Run and jump to a block on the right. Now you can jump over to the central structure and jump over the rim. You land in a green cavern. First swim straight ahead to find an underwater lever, which will open a metal door. At the end you come to a switch and after pulling it, you hear a rumble. Swim back and through an opening just underneath where you came in. At the end there is a switch and a metal door. Go through and you’re right back at the start and that is the END.

Alternate walkthrough by Phil Lambeth:

After an opening flyby through an area eerily reminiscent of the opening level of TR1, run W down the icy passage past a harmless skeleton (the darts have been turned off in this version) and follow until Lara's attention is drawn up to her left.  Keep running forward, however, into a small cave and go to the NW corner.  Face the W wall and back flip to the slope behind you.  Jump off, grab the edge and pull up into SECRET #1.  Run forward into a dark area and pick up the small medi-pack in the far right corner.  On the way back out, shoot two bats.  Run out onto the slope and slide down to the floor of the cave.  Go back past the point where Lara's attention was distracted earlier.  Find the opening SW and note the steep S slope.  Go around to the right where Lara again looks up.  Continue into the passage and pick up some shotgun ammo.  Quickly turn around and shoot the wolf that's nibbling at your heels.  Note the closed door high up on the W wall before leaving this area.

Go back N where Lara was first distracted and climb up two ledges W.  Run forward into an open area and shoot two bats and another wolf.  Turn left into the side cave with a hole in the ceiling, and stand at the SW corner.  Pull up into a higher area for SECRET #2.  Go to your left to trigger three more bats, then pick up the SHOTGUN and some shotgun ammo.  Hop back down, leave this cave and turn left.  At the W end you'll see a huge circular door to your left.  Go around to the SW corner and pull down the wall switch.  The circular door rolls back, so enter the new area and run down the ramp.  Stop for more shotgun ammo near the remains of Indiana Jones and continue S.  When you step onto the raised stone path you'll see an informative flyby of the area down below.

Slide down into a large underground area.  Look around to get your bearings if you wish, but remember that it's important to do things down here in their proper order.  When you're ready to proceed, head S down the ramp toward the tiny waterfall.  Jump into the green water and swim all the way around to the other side.  Pull the underwater lever in the W wall for a screen shot showing doors opening elsewhere.  Swim back around and climb out of the water.  Run up the ramp and loop around to the left.  Go down between the stone walls to find a water hole.  The doors you just now opened are beyond the water hole in the W wall.  Draw your shotgun and walk forward past the open doors to draw out a giant scorpion lurking in a dark passage to your left.  After killing it, locate the moveable block in the S wall and push it forward once.  Go around it to the left and push it once more W.

A second moveable block is revealed, so pull it back once.  You can't move it outside, so the only apparent way to get around it is by standing at the corner formed by the block and the wall, facing SW.  Use the corner cheat to get into the S passage (hold down the up arrow and the jump key, and Lara will gradually make her way past the block and into the passage beyond). There's another unmarked moveable block to your right, in the W wall of the passage.  Push it forward twice to reveal a new area.  Go around to the left of the unmarked block and pull it once S.  Turn around and pull up into a small passage.  Use it to get around to the other side of the block.  Enter the revealed NW passage and find the wall switch just inside.  Pull it down for a screen shot showing a gate lifting open, then use the nearby ladder in the N wall to climb back out.

Walk forward when you reach the top and face the slope below.  Angle Lara slightly to her right so she'll slide down facing forward.  Step off onto the slope and immediately jump off to grab the climbable wall ahead.  Climb to the top, shift left and drop down into the upper passage where you'll hear the distinctive chimes of SECRET #3.  Locate another shaft at the W end and climb down the ladder there.  Step forward into the alcove and pick up the GOLDEN KEY.  Climb back up and this time allow Lara to slide down the slope to the area where she pushed the first moveable block.  Exit via the open doors E, where you're met by a skeleton.  Use your shotgun to blast it into the nearby water hole.

Turn left at the water hole and run down a short dark alley.  You'll fall down into a shallow hole at the end.  Pull down the wall switch for a screen shot of an underwater door.  Reverse roll and use the ladder to climb back out.  Turn around at the top and take a standing jump and grab to pull out to the ground level.  To the S of the water hole is a block and some steps you can climb.  Head E past the waterfall and hop down onto the ledge.  There's an opening to your right.  Enter and step onto a ledge overlooking a deep pit.  Take a running jump and grab to the other side, trying to ignore the dizzying camera angle, then pull up and run forward.  Time your way past two swinging blades, being mindful of the spikes on either side.  Loop around to the right and pull down the wall switch to open the nearby door.

Enter and drop down into the room below, ignoring the rotating blades for the moment.  Locate the large medi-pack in the alcove near the E wall and shoot any bats that are attracted by your movement.  Climb back up N, turn around and face slightly SW.  Take two steps back and then take a standing jump and grab to the nearest surface guarded by the rotating blades.  Shift left around several corners until you reach the far SW corner, where you will sustain minimal damage when you pull up.  Time a running jump into the W opening, then pause for a small medi-pack in the crawl space to your right.  Back out quickly, as a scorpion is on its way toward you.  Go up the N passage where the scorpion came from, stand near the giant cigar cutter and side flip safely through when the blades are open.  You can hear the tell-tale sound of a nearby but unseen slicer dicer (which never does show up, by the way) as you continue up the ramp.  In the next room you'll find a floor lever.  Push it for a flyby that takes you back the way you came in and ends outside at the E side of this area.

Use the Golden Key in the receptacle in the E alcove to open the door next to you.  Enter for two large medi-packs, then exit and loop around to the right.  Safety drop from the opening, and you'll find yourself near the ledge overlooking the deep pit.  Exit N, turn left and climb the block.  Note that the waterfall has disappeared and that the larger pool below has been drained.  Continue W and hop down near the water hole.  Jump into the water and swim S against a strong current.  Avoid contact with the walls, as you'll need every bit of your available air (and maybe a medi-pack or two) to reach the other side without drowning.  Draw weapons quickly when you pull out into an underground cavern.  Kill two wolves, then step out E toward a ledge to trigger a flyby through the next area.

When camera control is restored, walk to the end of the ledge and take a running jump across the gap and grab the ledge on the other side.  Pull up and deal quickly with a pair of skeletons.  Go the back side of the central column and pull down the switch to open the door you saw at the end of the previous flyby.  Go back and take a running jump across the gap to the W side.  Pull up and run to the other end of the short ledge.  Turn right and take a running jump and grab N to the column.  Pull up, turn left and take a standing jump to the steps, where another skeleton has been awakened.  Blast it over the edge, then continue clockwise up the steps until you're facing the door you just opened.  Take a standing jump inside and go down the steps to meet yet another skeleton.  It may pose some problems because of the tight quarters, so you may wish to run past it a couple of times and then blast it into the E opening.

Stand at the edge of the opening and jump up to grab the monkey bars.  Follow the strip ahead and left, enduring the annoying fixed camera angle, until you reach the end and are able to drop down onto a ledge.  Walk forward and find the hole in the floor.  Drop down and pick up the BRONZE KEY between the two statues, then pull back out through the hole in the ceiling and slide down E.  Run forward and jump into the water below.  You'll find some shotgun ammo near a closed grate N, and some more shotgun ammo near the S side of the same column.  Climb out W onto a snowy ledge for some uzi ammo, and be ready to blast the nearby skeleton that's awakened.  Stand NE and take a standing jump to grab that portion of the upper ledge that's jutting out, and pull up into a familiar area.  Go around to the near SW alcove and locate the ladder to your right.  Use it to back flip to the upper ramparts.  Two skeletons are awakened and start making their way toward you, so blast them into the water below.

Follow the ledges around in the direction from which the skeletons came, and take a running jump N to the snow-covered ledge.  Go forward a bit and jump up to grab the monkey bars.  You'll get another annoying fixed camera angle. Monkey swing forward and take the second left.  Continue until the end and drop down onto a short ledge.  Turn to your right and take a running jump E to the opening.  Pull up and use the Bronze Key in the receptacle to your right.  The door behind you opens, so reverse roll and step forward to trigger a lingering flyby that ends with Lara sliding down and dropping into some water.  Surface and note the closed door W above you.  Swim E and pull up onto some submerged steps.  Go up the steps and pull down the wall switch (1st of 5) in the dark corner.

Go back down the stairs and swim into the larger underwater area.  Go across to the W side and locate some shotgun ammo in the SW alcove.  Near the NW corner, in an E alcove is an underwater lever (2nd of 5). Now swim over toward the E side and locate a shaft in the N wall next to a waterfall.  Swim down for some shotgun ammo.  Opposite the waterfalls is an alcove S where you'll find a small medi-pack.  Now swim S where you entered this area, toward the lighted circular wall emblem with a grinning monarch in the middle, and turn left just before you get there.  Swim down and to the right, and you'll see a narrow passage S.  Turn right at the end and swim up the shaft.  Continue W, down, then up, and follow past a shaft leading up to a breathing hole until you reach an opening at the very W end.  Surface, turn around, pull up and run to the end of the short passage to pull down the wall switch (3rd of 5).

Reverse roll and jump back into the water.  Swim back to the open area and head over to the NW corner.  There's a submerged block you can climb onto.  You're about to embark on a block puzzle, and there are several ways to do it, but here's the way the builder probably intended.  Jump to the lone block in the water, either from the adjacent block above the water's surface or from the higher ledge you can pull up onto.  Turn W and take a standing jump to the ledge directly ahead of you.  Push block #1 W once.  Go inside the passage and loop around to the right to push block #2 twice to the E end of the ledge.  Go back to block #1, pull it back to its original position, then use the central block and the ledge to get back into the passage.  Push block #1 once E onto the ledge outside, then reverse roll and find block #3 in the SW corner.  Pull it back twice to reveal an alcove.  Go inside and push block #4 S once to reveal a passage to your right.  Follow for SECRET #4 and a small medi-pack and uzi ammo.

Go back outside, jump to the central block, and from there jump to the SW ledge.  Push block #5 three times W into the secret passage.  Pull block #4 once N, go outside and jump from the central block to the SW ledge and pull block #4 back once.  Go back around and find a new passage.  A door to your left opens as you approach it.  Pull down the wall switch (4th of 5), turn to your left and take a running jump and grab to the ledge over the canal.  Pull up and take a running jump E.  Run up the ramp to trigger a boulder and veer to your left to safety.  Continue up the ramp after the boulder passes by and turn left into the opening.  Save your game at the top of two facing slopes.  Step forward and slide down, and jump off at the bottom of the second slope to grab the ledge W above some deadly spikes.  Pull up (you'll take some unavoidable damage) and turn to your right.  You're facing a bridge and that closed red door you've been seeing in all those cut scenes.

Start across the bridge and the camera angle changes abruptly.  This one is helpful for a change, as you can see a crack in the near wall.  Go back until camera control is restored, then jump up E and grab the crack. Shimmy left around the corner and continue until you're able to pull up.  Drop down E onto the ledge and follow until you reach a wall switch.  Pull it and hop back twice to fall into the water.  Swim W, close to the N wall, and you'll find an opening beyond a column where a door has been opened.  Swim inside and follow the narrow passage until you emerge in a well-lit pool.  Climb out SW to some "attaboy" Indiana Jones music and follow to the wall switch (5th of 5) in an alcove.  Pull it to open that door on the other side of the bridge.  Return to the large outdoor area.  Climb out NW where you did the block puzzle earlier, jump into the block puzzle passage and retrace your steps as described above.  (Watch out, there's a second boulder waiting for you at the top of that ramp, but this one isn't triggered until you get much closer to it.)

Make that two-tiered slide and jump over the spikes for a second time, pull up and run across the bridge into the open doorway.  A remote camera angle shows a skeleton being awakened far above you while a wolf attacks at close quarters.  Kill it and jump into the refreshing blue water.  Ignore for now the E opening and swim into the W opening (noting the closed grate straight ahead).  Swim down and follow the long passage E until you reach the opening to your left.  Turn left there and swim up to locate the underwater lever.  Pull it to open that grate, then surface for air.  Go back the way you came (if you continue E you'll end up at another closed grate.)  Go through the opening formerly blocked by the grate, swim up to the surface and pull up E.  Wade forward and find yourself in a new area.  Swim to a ledge, pull up and quickly dispose of a wolf.  Note the floor lever guarded by a perpetual flame blower, as well as the keyhole in the S wall.

Jump E down onto a ledge and locate the GOLDEN KEY at the N end.  You can't reach the former ledge from here, so jump into the water and swim back through the W opening.  Retrace your steps as described above and use your Golden Key in that receptacle to turn off the flame blower.  Jump over to the floor lever and push it for a flyby that shows an underwater grate opening E.  Jump E to the lower ledge, hang drop from the E edge into the water below, and swim through the E opening you ignored earlier.  Swim forward and up the shaft (ignore the side passage S for now, as it leads to another closed grate).  At the top, swim W through the opened grate and into a new area.  Surface and pull up W. Run around the ledge to the dark SE corner and take a running jump N to the ledge.  Pull up and go to the wall switch for a cut scene showing an underwater door opening. Jump into the water, go through the E opening and down, and this time take the S side passage.  Follow until you reach the opened door for SECRET #5 and two stashes of uzi ammo.

Swim back up and pull out W once more. Jump up to grab the monkey bars and monkey swing across a familiar area as the camera angle changes once again. Continue until camera control is restored before releasing. Pull up onto a higher ledge and blast away that skeleton you awakened earlier.  There are two more nearby that are still asleep, however, so you know you'll have to deal with them sooner or later.  Sure enough, as you head E along the ledge the camera angle changes again to show both skeletons awakening at the same time.  Turn around and do battle with them, then continue E and pick up the RED KEY.  Push the nearby floor lever to open a door behind you.  Again, the nearby monkey bars come to your rescue.  Use them to go N to the wall, then W as that annoying fixed camera angle kicks in again.  Don't release prematurely after you pass through the opening, as you'll slide down to your death.  Don't go all the way to the end, either, but turn to your right and drop down into an opening.  Kill the bat that was badgering you, then step forward N toward a formidable spike trench as a second bat comes fluttering up to you.

If you try the obvious method of getting across the spike field by jumping back and forth along the facing slopes, you'll trigger a flyby that's most annoying.  I suggest taking a little damage by stepping forward into the spikes, then stepping back as the flyby does its thing.  After that, you're safe to jump the slopes without further distractions.  Be advised, however, that the trench is wide and allows little room for error, so you'd best save before beginning this maneuver.  When you land safely on the flat surface, go and stand at the NE edge.  Take a standing jump over the harmless trench to land at the end of the far ledge.  You can probably see a giant scorpion cavorting down below.  Without moving backward or forward, take a running jump N onto the higher ledge for SECRET #6 and the UZIS along with some uzi ammo.

Safety drop from the ledge to slide down to where that giant scorpion is waiting for you.  Use some of your high-powered weaponry to eliminate it, then look around to find yourself back in the starting area.   There are two big differences, however.  One of the ledges W is missing, so you can't go back up that way.  But a block has shifted to open up a new area directly across the way E, so go there and enter the passage.  Follow until you reach an open area where you get that maddening fixed camera shot yet again.  Don't dash forward, as the area ahead is spike trapped. Save your game here. Step inside and turn left to the safe square in the NW corner.  Walk E along the wall to the next safe square.  Don't try to pick up whatever's lying on the next square E, or you'll be spiked.  Turn right and take a standing jump S to the next safe square next to the wall.  Turn left and go E along the S wall for two more squares (just past the skeleton), turn left  and run to the N wall.  Turn right and pick up the shotgun ammo on the next safe square.  Continue forward to the E wall and pull down the switch.  A cut scene shows a door opening that you saw near the very beginning of this level.

Make your way gingerly back along the safe squares until you're out of this hellish area.  As you emerge from the passage, head SW along the snow-covered rocks to the steep slope on your left and the short alley to your right.  Enter the alley, where the door opened high up to your left.  Pull up into the passage and follow it until you slide down into an area where you're accosted by two giant scorpions.  After eliminating them, note that you're back in the upper ledge area that you couldn't reach a little while ago.  Head W and take a left where you opened that giant circular door much earlier.  Go down past the Indiana Jones skeleton and slide back down into the temple area.  Turn left and head E along that snowy ledge.  When you near the wall, stand at the snow line facing SW.  Take a running jump onto the stable, moss-covered side of the roof-like structure.  Turn to face SE and take a standing jump up to the adjacent flat surface.

Go up the steps past the sleeping skeleton and use your Red Key in the keyhole.  The nearby door opens, but the skeleton isn't awakened.  Tiptoe inside and follow the passage until camera control is once again taken away from you.  Wait a few seconds, and a boulder will come rumbling down toward you and fall harmlessly into a pit.  Walk forward until camera control is restored, jump over the pit and run forward to the end.  Turn right and save your game before pulling up onto the slope.  Slide down and jump off near the end onto a second, but invisible, slope.  Slide down the second slope a short distance and jump off to land on an invisible bridge.  Walk out to the N end of this bridge and take a standing jump NE to the block to your right.  Turn right and take a running jump toward that hard-to-see shaft.  You'll land safely on a stable surface, so simply run forward into the shaft and the green water far below.

There's an underwater temple W and a closed gate S. Take a deep breath and swim into the temple, all the way to the back near the NW corner (swimming first down, then up) where you'll find a shaft with an underwater lever.  Pulling it opens that S gate, so hurry back for some air before proceeding.  Go through the S opening and follow until you're able to pull up into a small room.  Pull down the W wall switch and endure a brief earthquake.  Go back out, swim up for some air, and go back down to see that a new area E has opened up near the lake floor.  Swim inside and allow the strong current to carry you along until you reach the end.  Pull up onto some steps. If you run forward and down, you'll come to a closed gate, so take the opening to your right and go up the steps to a wall switch that opens the door.  Go back down, enter the open doorway and end the level with a crash to your desktop.
