Reviewer's comments
"A simple joke level. I gave it a 1 in textures for at least including textures at all." - Lorax (01-Feb-2022)
"Well it definitely lives up to it's name, Lara... is... in... a... BOX. The puzzles were none existent, gameplay was just default Lara I guess. Enemies, objects and Secrets were none existent. The atmosphere made me feel like i was in a box, so it worked out to what it said. Sound and cameras were creepy and was to be honest right for the tone of the level. Lighting was flat, but the textures were not bad for a box. Conclusion - its just Lara in a box, it does what it says on the tin... or box i suppose." - JimmyBeon (09-Jun-2021)
"Lara in a Box is a phenomenal level where you can spend unlimited time in this boxy-like room where you can just jump, run, dive, and walk. Enjoy." - Kubsy (03-Jul-2020)
"Hilariously awful. Wolfy Regards." - Wolf7 (27-Jan-2019)
"This is only a mockery for all the level builders. Nothing to do in a single and empty room and when you want to go to the title screen, the game crashes. Pathetic." - Jose (22-Nov-2017)
"The meme is dead. Nothing to say. Nothing to do (Literally)." - SeniorBlitz (19-Nov-2017)
"No gameplay, or does running around in an empty room deserves at least 1 point? I think no. No objects, enemies or secrets, or does Lara count as an object? She is indispensable, if she's not there the game crashes ;) It looks like a box, but not so much. The only sound here it's the one of the atmosphere. The textures are brown and that looks almost like a box. The secret sound is in the audio folder, but why? :O this is strange......." - alan (15-Oct-2016)
"An empty room. Thats about it, Not much to say on this one." - JoeTheCrazyGamer (07-Aug-2016)
"I think this is a no-sense level but very funny!" - Daniele199 (23-Feb-2016)
"I had to get round to it eventually in my quest to review all the old levels. I see it's the only level the builder ever made. Perhaps he felt he'd said it all after this, lol." - Jay (10-Feb-2016)
"Title says it all, really." - Ryan (09-Jan-2016)
"How did I end up downloading this map again ? I surely had a lot of fun running in circle for 10 seconds and then watch at that window with the binoculars. Then I closed the game and started writing this." - Hedteur (27-Dec-2015)
"I don't really know why I bothered to download this, but I must confess that I laughed. It's Lara... in a box!! Wow." - SrDanielPonces (06-Dec-2015)
"Well it's Lara in a box. Literally. That's all there is into it. No items, no enemies, no nothing. Just a room, with Lara on it." - Zhyttya (07-Aug-2015)
"One of the biggest misterys in TRLE..WHERE DOES THE LIGHT COME FROM? Its a sealed box.. where does it come from? Is Lara the Light Source? Is she more than a GOD? We will never know.. But the light was great.. If i was IGN i would give 10/10 to Lightning and MISTERY!! This level has the perfect amount of textures and the best texture possible! Completely recommend if you have like 1 second to explore a level" - Leeth (07-Aug-2015)
"A rather pointless release that has you running around in an empty room for a few minutes before quitting and tossing it into the recycle bin. In this day and age, it's only really worth downloading, if you're a reviewer. Otherwise, don't even bother giving this late April Fools prank the attention it most certainly does not deserve." - Ceamonks890 (04-Jun-2014)
""Lara in a Box" is truly a groundbreaking level that rightly swept through the community's conscious. With its breathtaking visuals, heart-pounding action, and unrelenting suspense, this level never breaks one's sense of complete immersion. Gameplay unfolds flawlessly, as difficulty increases at a smooth and delicious pace. But perhaps the greatest achievement is its depth of content, ranging from 150 to 200+ hours of nonstop wonder and enjoyment. Astoundingly however, its fervid display of sheer brilliance will keep players coming back again and again, potentially finding more to love upon each revisit. With so much content and unlimited replay value, one cannot simply miss the chance to play "Lara in a Box". Truly a dive that will capture the heart, the mind, and the soul with an insatiable hunger for more. The community eagerly awaits a sequel...gotcha... .25/10" - Xela (27-Apr-2014)
"Ok after this i would like to propose michael to keep only "simple purple" "rude and crude" and "BeRT world" in the joke category and deleting all the others levels which are nothing but useless crap including this one!." - janachorider (06-Mar-2014)
"Well, there's something timeless about this 'box', after all, they say from a tiny seed once grew a mighty oak... I thought I'd check out the worst and best level of all time, and this has to be the worst without a doubt! Texturing is not too bad, that's all for this one. Net gameplay 0 seconds, 5 minutes if you run around trying to find a way out...:)" - sonnyd83 (23-Jun-2012)
"Just as Ian chose this level for one of his milestone reviews, I thought I could do no worse than to honor for my 1,000th review what has become a veritable legend in Level Editor Land. Just think: 53 reviewers before me, and an average score of 0.28. Surely no nastier depths have ever been plumbed by so many gluttons for punishment. I even resisted resorting to the flycheat in search of a finish trigger. However, just to be on the safe side, I played in god mode, fearing that sustained running throughout the room might trigger something and cause a demigod to materialize. Now for my review. Gameplay, there is none. Likewise, no enemies, objects or secrets. Therefore, in keeping with the fair and objective review standards to which we all unfailingly adhere, the first two categories require no investment of thought or anguish. The third category, however, raises a twinge of conscience. Since you can hear Lara's feet pounding the pavement as she circles the box as many times as it gives her satisfaction to do so, surely a measly point is called for. The final category gave me the most trouble. Since I could clearly see everything around me, and since I didn't have to light a single flare as I roamed this way and that, fairness dictates that I deem the lighting to be of at least average quality, hence the 5. In the unlikely event I should ever try my hand at building a level of my own, this one will serve as my benchmark. No one ever accused me of setting the bar too high." - Phil (29-Jan-2012)
"A...room with no gameplay, objects or lighting...at least the textures are correctly rotated(some of them)." - misho98 (28-Dec-2011)
"1) Lara in a Box (0,0,0,1) Total = 1/40 (2.5%)
Firstly an introduction. I'm relatively new to TRLE but not to Tomb Raider - I bought our heroine's first game the day it was released on PS1, was hooked by The Lost Valley and reeled in for life by St Francis Folly. I adored the first five PS releases (I played them all repeatedly) and this site has given me a new lease of life exploring Lara's worlds. I much prefer this game engine to all later official attempts and can only applaud the efforts by the 'amateur' builders I have seen here to date. My aim is to play test various selected levels with my 10 year old daughter Sarah (also hooked by this site!), referring only to the walkthroughs when absolutely necessary. We will then post our reviews which hopefully gamers like myself will find useful. That's the plan anyway! My level of skill can be judged by the fact I only referred to the walkthrough on TR3 twice on my initial attempt.

Now, I'm not particularly technical and I did eventually work out how to get levels to work in TRLE, but I must admit a basic one page guide to this process would have been helpful from the Home page.

So, onto this level. Well, it isn't really a level as such, but I did find it a useful place to test Lara's basic moves with no possibility of dying, in fact with no possibility of anything else happening whatsoever! It fully deserves its bottom ranking and long may that continue. In fact I feel I have to apologise to 'Gotcha' for giving Lighting and Textures 1/10, hence slightly threatening this esteemed position. However some effort was made on this part and is such rewarded.
Next Level - Lara and the Horse." - Robobok (15-May-2011)
"This is a joke room where you're just in a room. A box even. I used to do a lot of levels like this. The first one I made was a lot like this. It may be boring but I didn't mind." - afzalmiah (04-Mar-2011)
"I was able to finish this level after reading the walkthrough without any problems and accomplished to bring the review count for this level to 50 ;-)" - Blue43 (04-Oct-2010)
"I once have made a level like this, but I\'ve never released it. What a shame! I should have done it. I would be famous today!" - DJ Full (13-Jul-2010)
"I don't see any sense in this level. You can jump, run - but nothing else. You can't go anywhere else. Pretty boring." - manarch2 (11-Jul-2010)
"Gameplay&Puzzles: Except of some jumping (!), there wasn't anything to to here. 0 Points. Enemies, Objects & Secrets: No enemies, no objects, no secrets. 0 Points. Atmosphere, Sound & Cameras: Well, you could see something. That's all. 0 Points. Lighting & Textures: All the same. 0 Points. Result: 0 Points. Annoying but true. This level is nonsense." - Keith (07-Jul-2010)
"I don't understand the intention of this level. Level? Not really... I don't get the joke, so please don't download this "level"." - Jonson (03-Aug-2009)
"For the first time since then I writeReviews write I am complete helpless. What should one write about this "Level"? One single room, 6 x 6 fields large, twice as high than Lara and three different textures. And this it was. There is not any more , absolutely nothing. And now in addition one should write a Review? No chance. The only amusing thing was the Walkthrough of Michael Prager. And no, I do not write this Review to increase my Reviewcount on the easy way. Really not." - Scottie (08-Jun-2009)
"This level is fairly pointless... well actually it is 100% pointless, this level is basically just a box for lara to run around in, theres no atmosphere, gameplay, puzzles or enemies. There wasnt really any lighting and there was some sort of egyptian texture on the walls and ceiling." - herothing (17-Apr-2009)
"I put a one for textures simply because they exist. Nothing else does, except the room itself and of course our poor heroine. Move along, nothing of interest here." - SSJ6Wolf (22-Oct-2008)
"It would have been at least a little bit funny if there had been a couple of skellies in the corners, all suspiciously dressed as Lara ;-). The way it is, a well-textured box is all there is to it." - Ruediger (07-Feb-2008)
"I cannot give 0000 to any level because the people have bothered to texture it. Now how did lara get into the box. Is this all a dream? Did she fall asleep and wake up there. Did she shoot a self reparing wall and run in there only to realise the wall had fixed itself, if so then why doesn't she just shoot the self repairing wall. So now we know that it couldn't be a self repairing wall but there are still lots of other possibilities. Maybe a wizard zapped her into the room along with some food for the journey. How long has lara been in the box, how long will she be in the box. When is the mean magician going to let her out of the box. None of these we do not know but we should all hope that lara gets out of the box safe and sound because i am sure that the cleaner will not be happy to find a rotting lara on the floor. So to save that poor cleaner from screaming i think we should save uup some money, buy some food and send it to lara to stop her dying because if lara dies then we will not be able to build tomb raider levels and without tomb raider levels life would have no meaning, and the suicide rate would go up and the world would be driven mad and destroyed by this one builder who just wanted to see lara stuck in a box." - Cory (15-Oct-2007)
"{OK, so I am trying to get my review count up. Sue me! }I actually thought this level was funny. There is absolutely nothing to do and no way out. The room isn't full of interesting things to do or look at but Lara is in a 'box' after all." - Kitkat (23-Jul-2007)
"This level made me laugh. It's so damn funny. :-) You are in one room, running around and nothing happens. :-) I checked all squares, there is no door, no window, nothing and she can't reach the ceiling either. No solution to escape." - Oxy (22-Jul-2007)
"You can probably gather what the rest of the review will be like when I tell you that the only reason that I downloaded this level was 'to see how bad it was'. Well, when I loaded up the level, I considered many reasons why Lara might be there. Perhaps it was a physical representation of Lara's mind after being trapped in various tombs throughout the years, or maybe her psychological fear of small spaces with no obvious exit. But then it dawned on me, that I was wrong. It's just a box, and there is nothing to do here. I gave a '1' for lighting and textures, firstly because I was feeling generous, and secondly because it managed to prevent a 'Lara in a Black Void' scenario." - Spike (01-Jul-2007)
"Author nick 'Gotcha'. Yeah you got me all right. I've never got around to playing 'Lara in a Box' until now, and I use the term 'play' loosely here. But it's reputation precedes it, having the enigmatic reputation of being for a long time the lowest rated level of all time is a great burden. I see there are a couple of new contenders to this crown, to take that weight off LIAB's shoulders.... Can't wait to play these. Frankly I was disappointed. I had expected so much less. In such great anticipation of playing this level, I had built up a picture in my mind of Lara being imprisoned in a 1x1x1 black box, unable to move, unable to do anything. Instead I got an averaged sized room with standard catacomb textures, and shock horror there were even alternate textures used on the floor to avoid the wallpaper tiling effect - wow such subtle nuances shows an eye for detail by the builder. There were no stretched textures to spot. Default room lighting was used - it could have been a lot worse - it could have been pitch black with -50 shadow bulbs. Of course there's nothing else to do and no finish trigger, but I could have spent hours marvelling at this understatement of architectural brilliance. But then again, perhaps not. Just as Sanctuary of Fire, Ice and Water set the benchmark for excellence in TR Custom Level building, Lara In A Box represents the other end of the continuum by setting the standard so low for all other contenders to fall below. I wonder if the author ever checks up on his reviews and is amazed by the attention and reputation that this classic level has gained. I'd like to lobby for a 'wooden-spoon' Hall of Fame, and LIAB should be the honoured first inductee. Time to download:0.2 seconds; time to install level: 2 minutes; time to play level: knock yourself out... as long as you want (best estimate 30 seconds); time to write review: 40 minutes; memory of this classic level: priceless." - EssGee (17-Mar-2007)
"If I'm counting correctly, this will be my 800th review. To mark the occasion I have decided to submit a review for a level I have not downloaded, have never played and never will. I have no idea what texture set has been used, nor how well the lighting has been achieved. If it has enemies (which I doubt)I will never see them.Whatever atmosphere it contains will remain an unknown to me.I have read several of the other reviews and (coupled with its reputation) have arrived at the conclusion that this level was intended as a snub to all the players and reviewers out there. Consequently I shall snub the builder back by submitting the lowest possible score without sullying myself with the business of actually experiencing whatever it was he inflicted on us.He deserves no less." - Orbit Dream (11-Mar-2007)
"I really don't understand why the author has released a level including a simple room where's no lighting, objects or anything. It's really impossible to build worse level than this one. I think there's nothing more I could tell about this level." - Samu (19-Jan-2007)
"Since when have boxes been constructed of stone? I would have scored this much higher if the box was made of more believable materials. Nonetheless, this box was, at least, spacious. A sofa and TV would have been a nice addition - at least Lara could have caught up with the soaps whilst sitting in comfort during her incarceration." - Staticon (25-Feb-2006)
"After hearing a lot of this "level" i felt I had to try it. The result is my first "all 0" rating. Allthough a joke level I fail to see the fun in this... Just a room with simple textures and no lighting. Something a 5 year old can do. 2005-10-08" - QRS (08-Oct-2005)
"Please never download this level. All it has is a room with Lara in it. There is nothing to do, just load and exit. Stupid stuff from some guy." - Anurag (24-Jul-2005)
"I actually got introduced to this ages ago by Gotcha (Sam) just haven't sent a review in. A little bit pointless now really." - TombRaiderFan (13-May-2005)
"Hmm another silly level trapped within four walls nowhere to turn. That's it. Makes you wonder how she even got in there in the first place lol well i'll give him 1 point coz I can't even build a room on the editor and he managed it! Bravo!" - Aims (05-Nov-2004)
"Well I was wondering why this level stands at the end of the list now I do understand - there is nothing to do. Lara is in a smaller room 8 clicks high. That is all. Right I thought maybe an invisible wall you could pass trough nothing...Not even a Box was there. That's why I give 0 at Enemies Objects Secrets. Well Lighting & Textures deserves 5 because the Textures are OK only no change of light at all. Gameplay 1 because anyhow it is there to move and it made me weird to think whether there really isn't a hidden way...Atmosphere Sound Cameras... just wall 0...." - TifaNazah (14-May-2004)
"I gave one for gameplay because the objective is to get out of the room and enter a tiny room that has absolutely nothing. At least the first room has some textures. While it did not make me laugh it demonstrated a certain idea. So this level can be called a joke level. Play this level if you're seeking solitude or peace." - Sakusha (08-Apr-2004)
"This level is horrible. Nothing to do nothing to see. Maybe I would have more fun picking up my little puppies dog crap all around the house then ever play this level again. This really sucks because it just took memory from my computer. Please do something else than taking up time." - Lyin_4rm_u (15-Mar-2004)
"Nothing to see and play. Bad very bad and not funny." - Yoav (08-Mar-2004)
"Well at least he textured the box. Would have been interesting to see how long I would have tried to get out if I didn't know that you couldn't." - Lady Lara (16-Dec-2003)
"This is a joke level? Seems I didn't get the joke then. Guess Gotcha got me as well. Haha. Nothing to do nothing to be seen it's just nothing. The installation was a waste of time because the 'level' just takes you a second. And shouldn't the title be 'Lara in a single room'?" - Tinka (16-Aug-2003)
"lol lol lol ! I think it's a great level ! I am laughing a lot !^^ Thanks Gotcha !" - Neso (10-Apr-2003)
"I must say that the exit of this first room quite escaped everyone. However once through the hidden doorway one is subjected to a psychological trauma that can only be described as pure sadistical transendentalism. I just had to play this level more than once for my eyes belayed belief........ I can be tortured no further.............." - Data (13-Jan-2003)
"I wouldn't call this a box - I would call it a room not a very big room but yet - a room. There is texture but it is rather boooooring. There is no gameplay there are no enemies there are no objects there are no......." - G.Croft (12-Jan-2003)
"Picture the scene: Lara in a room with nowhere to go and nothing to do. Now if the author had decided to do a level called 'Lara in a padded cell' or 'Lara in a coffin' or whatever that might have appealed to my somewhat twisted sense of humour a tiny bit. Even if there was no gameplay to speak of I might have given it a point somewhere. But as it is even the title isn't amusing so it gets zilch zero nada nichts from me." - Bex (09-Nov-2002)
"Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! (No I did not go into a fit due to the level itself but by the review of Dimpfelmoser: he sure has more humoristic imagination than the level creator.)" - bERT (22-Sep-2002)
"This level doesn't deserve what I gave it but unfortunately this rating system doesn't have negative numbers...." - eTux (12-Jul-2002)
"This so called level finds Lara trapped in a small empty room with no escape and nothing to do. I wouldn't bother!" - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"A 6x5x2 tiles room with no exit and no finish trigger. Not funny." - Michael (21-Jun-2002)
"**** censored **** J" - Torry (21-Jun-2002)
"This isn't the first and won't be the last of these joke levels." - Treeble (21-Jun-2002)
"PLEASE! I BEG YOU! DON'T DOWNLOAD THIS LEVEL! YOUR LIFE WILL BE IN DANGER!" - TrueRaider (21-Jun-2002)
"Nothing to see only four walls the ceiling and the roof: a box. A kind of test?" - Josep (21-Jun-2002)
"What a waste of bandwidth." - Scott (21-Jun-2002)
"The name of the level and the name of the creator say it all. This is Lara in a box and that's it - Gotcha!! I have to add that this is the largest box I've ever seen though." - RaiderGirl (21-Jun-2002)
"Hahahahahaha sorry but I do admire this person. First the name Gotcha and the title: Lara in a box both should be a dead give away and me as number 13 reviewing it hahahahaha 18 april 2002" - Gerty (21-Jun-2002)
"Is it just me or should this level have been called 'Lara in a Room'? It's probably just me. Anyway not much to do in this level other than running around in the gigantic box. Rather boring actually." - Magnus (21-Jun-2002)
"Oh man this is really bull****. Sorry no way to write a real review here..." - XETH (21-Jun-2002)
"Oh boy! That was a waste of time! I hope that I don't have to play such a **** again!" - Alexander (21-Jun-2002)
"This isn't really a level. At least you shouldn't call it as such. It's one small room - no doors no windows nothing to see nothing to do. This so-called level should be deleted at once - no one will notice anything!" - LaraFan (21-Jun-2002)
"This is obviously a joke with Lara in a small room with nothing to do. No objects nothing I guess from the author's name it was his/her idea of fun. I am not amused." - Kristina (21-Jun-2002)
"I had to have a look at this because it was at the bottom of the list and you are right of course there are no enemies secrets or objects in the traditional sense and the gameplay is non existent. However the concept of this level is nothing but ingenious. I mean to put Lara in a small room call the thing Lara in a box and actually have some gamer try to leave this confined space for 40 minutes is just too good for words. As an avid fan of Nihilism and Dada I like the idea of providing us with a completely useless Lara thus questioning her (and ultimately our) utterly futile existence. But that's not all there is here. If you are interested (like me) in the philosophical side of Lara this level poses a few more interesting questions. For instance is there any real difference between let's say Lara in The Center of the World or Lara in the Box. She can't leave either space only one is a bit bigger. She would probably prefer to hang around in this level and just chill out rather than run around the whole day and die just to entertain us. And where does Lara go to have a rest cause you never see her in her sleep? Maybe it is in this room. Sure enough this work deals with the question of Lara's existence outside a given level room and isn't that the biggest puzzle of all. Furthermore I think it's fair to say that here the room itself is the real enemy and as enemies go it's very challenging and if you don't read the converter info you might say that the big secret is that there is no way out. After running around in circles for some time the atmosphere becomes rather depressing and that's very convincingly done. Lighting and Textures are ok in my view. All in all I would say that this level is the Tomb Raider equivalent to Andy Warhol's Empire State Building Film. You don't have to watch it but it's very important that the thing exists. In fact what I'm going to do is keep this file but will never open it again as I like the idea of someone providing a bit of privacy for good old Lara and hopefully this room will become her sanctuary where she can have a quite smoke without being hassled by gameheads from all over the world." - Dimpfelmoser (21-Jun-2002)
"Huh??? What is there to review and rate??? See what I wrote for Titanic." - Drew Pizza (21-Jun-2002)
