Reviewer's comments
"It is the Lost Valley level from the original game but with more enemies and out of bounds areas to explore. Sadly not a lot of effort has been put into actually making anything new in the level. Secrets are mostly the same as well. The main attraction in the level is the abundance of T-rexes and raptor enemies that litter most parts of the map now. That being said the level immediately equips you with enough weapons and ammo to deal with anything coming your way, so if you know how to dodge the enemies then it's not too difficult to beat it. The new areas you can explore take you to the hills which are meant to be out of bounds, which means you can bump into the 'sky', which feels sort of janky. There just isn't enough here to get a player looking for a quality level to play this. Simply play the original for a better time." - LuxQSD (15-Mar-2022)
"This is pretty much a remix of Lost Valley, with a few minor layout changes (mostly for secrets) and a huge increase in enemies. It seems overpopulation has occurred because t-rexes appear even in the highest parts of the hills! Luckily Lara is provided with many weapons and medkits at the start to deal with all of them. There isn't much going on besides the combat and some exploration, as Lara searches for those three gears to stop a waterfall. Some pushable blocks were added, but Lara can't push them, they are just used as footholds. Throw in some fake water surfaces and you have a pretty bizarre release overall, and not one that I'm sure brings enough to the table to justify its existence. However it may be a decent choice for someone looking for a high amount of TR1 combat. 21 minutes." - JesseG (11-Aug-2021)
"The point of this level seems to be just The Lost Valley with more action - meaning more dinos (some on illogical places and teaming with wolves on top of it). I must say that I got quite bored with it, I mean I liked the original level of course but the designer did not add anything in fact I think his additions harmed the level. Not recommended, sorry. Was surprised to play this after Beneath the Forbidden City, to be honest. I am gonna rate with only what he added in mind, which is very little." - Nomad (27-Aug-2020)
"Another return to familiar territory, only this time the Lost Valley has been seemingly overrun with dinosaurs of all shapes and sizes. Gameplay-wise, there's little to no changes, aside from a couple of extra blocks and ledges, plus loads of pickups and weaponry, so I can't really give it a higher score than what I have here. The construction is well up to standard and if you want a bit of mindless shooting and nothing more, then this should be right up your street. But it personally didn't click with me." - Ryan (05-Aug-2018)
"I know this is simply the Lost Valley that we all know and love but I thought this was great. More raptors, T.Rexes coming out the whazoo. The use of the push blocks to give the player access to areas they were not supposed to get from there was interesting too. I had never run through that underwater tunnel by the shotgun before. I played this using the Tombati.exe and graphics were brilliant. I had to add three missing dll files to the directory first but it played great." - Torry (01-Apr-2018)
"Nice remake with more enemies than in the original "Lost valley" level from Tomb Raider 1. I wasn't able to kill some of them, because they were out of reach, but that wasn't necessary anyway. Something not so creative about this level: You have the same task as in the original level and the gears you are looking for are be found the same way, at the same points of the level. No new puzzles or something to get them. That's a little disappointing. I would describe this level as "The lost valley, infested by more enemies", because that's exactly what this level is. Nothing really new." - Nuri (24-Feb-2018)
"If you're a pure shooter, perhaps you're interested to play this level; if not, and if you've already played TR1, it's not worth to play 'cause you'll find the same map and only much more enemies to shoot (some of them located in odd positions). What I did to get some fun was try to get the three wheels without kill the enemies (hard way). You know what you expect; it's your choice." - Jose (15-Nov-2016)
"This is a remake but with much more animals to shoot than in the original one. There are also still a few stumping around when I left the level as I saw no need to kill them. Your goal is finding 3 Cogs and use them. A nice trip through memory lane." - Gerty (01-Sep-2016)
"Original released as "gym.phd", this leve was originally intended to be played through the Croft Manor option in the main menu, so it would disable you facilities like saving and reloading. As years have gone by, I find myself being able to save at any given points a commodity mostly required to get through whatever game I'm playing, as time and patience tend to be much shorter than a decade or so ago. Anyway, point in case: this is The Lost Valley from TR1. You know it, you've played it, you love it. Jackie has "injected" a great many number of dinossaurs into the level, so when you least expect, one might come around the corner and bite you without previous notice. A different twist to a classic. As everything else is pretty much left untouched (bar a couple of pushblocks on strategic locations, be warned though those areas weren't originally meant to be explored so illegal slopes might get you forever stuck), I find it hard to attribute ratings to the categories. 15 minutes, 5 secrets. 12/15" - Treeble (30-Dec-2015)
"As with all click-for-click remakes of TR1 levels, this cannot honestly be rated high for gameplay inventiveness - except that Jackie absolutely goes overboard in the enemy department, and provides several additional dozen dinos and wolves to shoot (although they pose little actual menace with the copious arsenal provided).Much of the placement of dinos is actually quite funny (several of them are well out of harms way);and those who are familiar with the original will breeze through this with little to no trouble.Everything else is well up to par,so (as remakes go) it entertains sufficiently." - Orbit Dream (03-Sep-2015)
"And so we are back to my childhood again..... not quite. This level is an exact copy of the original Lost Valley level except from the added enemies of course and the pushable blocks which helps you get to the secrets earlier than you are supposed to. It's a level i've played too many times for it to still be fun to play and challenging enough. Even though he added more enemies i still thought it was very easy. One thing i found very funny was the T-rex balancing on top of the cliff. I was hoping there was a way to get to the fellas up there haha. Only recommended for people who haven't played the original too many times or if you want a more challenging raid." - totizedger (25-Jun-2015)
"Essentially nothing more than a slightly difficult version of the Lost Valley level that we all associate with TR1, where enemies are more abundant and you can obtain all the weapons in the game, at the very start. So, if you didn't think the original version was challenging enough, then good news. This very well could be right up your alley. Everyone else interested in this release on the other hand, are better off looking elsewhere. As this level completely lacks anything truly original or compelling enough, to make itself worth the download in this day and age." - Ceamonks890 (28-Jun-2014)
"I think my scores for this level are almost too generous because I think the builder's contribution to it is minimal and if you played the original level, playing this is more than optional. OK there were slight changes in the geometry and added enemies to spice the whole thing up a bit, but on the whole this is not quite a fun game, especially since this level has been remade a bit too often. Sorry." - manarch2 (28-Jul-2013)
"I don't know if this is indeed what happened, but it's just too endearing to think that this level was conceived by someone who's played the original game (at least the level in question) so many times that at some point he thought it's just not challenging enough anymore - and given the wish-fulfilling box that the level editor is, thought he'd spice it up with a whole T-Rex clan and another throng of velociraptors. For what it's worth - that's the essential difference between "Gecko Valley" and "The Lost Valley" - sheer numbers of dinosaurs you encounter. The few additional minor tweaks are boxes that allow you to reach a secret very early in the game, and one in the valley that allows you to walk along the end-of-the-world exposing ridge. I have to admit - taking on 3 T-Rexes simultaneously wasn't that easy, but apart from that, the challenge is not that overwhelming. Though the view of the T-Rex doing a balancing act on top of the heart stone is hilarious, there isn't that much more in the way of this particular remake - at least not enough to warrant a much higher score. Enjoy it for what it is though, and you'll have fun alright." - eTux (20-Oct-2012)
"You might have been forgiven for thinking Lara killed off every last dinosaur in Lost Valley during her first trip there, but judging by this subsequent visit they've been breeding like rabbits ever since. This is a pretty faithful recreation of the TR1 Lost Valley level only with more of everything - not just raptors, wolves and T-rexes, but also guns and medipacks, which you honestly don't need. A nice chance to reminisce." - Jay (15-Feb-2012)
"It is a modifided version of Lost Valley. If I see well the modification is that, 10 more times T-Rexes and Raptors. There are many of them, but not true enemies. We can hide from them in a lot of places. Moreover, we can reach the enemies of the top of the rocks. Yet it was a good adventure." - Obig (14-May-2010)
"An almost exact remake of "Lost Valley," including correct placement of cog wheels and secrets, but with additional dinosaurs. The texturing and position of trees is very good. There are a few push blocks around and it isn't clear why they were added. This is often a favorite level, and Lara gets to leave T-rex corpses strewn over the landscape. The problem is that that there are T-rexes up top cliff walls, and Lara isn't able to target them. (Lara tried to scale up the cliff to reach one, but it was too far to reach.) So they stomp around, shaking the screen, roaring, and there isn't anyway to get rid of them. I can't rate this too high, as it's only a remake, but if you're in a mood to replay "Lost Valley," this is it. Nicely done." - dmdibl (11-Apr-2010)
"TR1 Lost Valley with more dinos, that's Gecko Valley. Nothing else." - rtrger (05-Apr-2010)
"In this adventure Lara visits the Lost Valley again, but now she needs more ammo... There are many pickups right in the beginning of the level, it doesn't take long and the player realizes it is not pointlessly done. After going down the at the waterfall a T-Rex, raptors and wolves welcome Lara. In the big valley three T-Rexes (!) have to be killed along with some raptors and two more are snarling at Lara from the upper parts. The level is almost the same like in Tomb Raider I, but with much more enemies. I enjoyed playing it." - Matie (27-Mar-2010)
"Another wonderful trip down memory lane here with a replay of The Lost Valley - only this time its on steroids with more dinos and especially more T-Rex to deal with and 5 secrets to find. Thoroughly enjoyable for the almost 30 minutes I spent here." - MichaelP (26-Mar-2010)
