Reviewer's comments
"What a brilliant TR1 style level, it gave me vibes of Midas palace with the visuals but the layout and map is so unique and such a pleasure to explore once you get over the confusion of 3 different paths leading to the same area. The level has some gorgeous looking courtyard areas and well as plenty underground areas, caves, canyons, rooftops and pools to make your way through. Gameplay may lack much puzzle elements but makes up for it with some great platforming and exploration and of course an abundance of challenges, fun timed tasks/runs as well as plenty of traps including a boulder hill with spike traps, tricky slide/jumps above death pits, nasty axes, razor doors and fire. Enemies arrive thick and fast throughout with gorillas, rats, lions and crocodiles all wanting to take a bite out of you as you battle through trying to find a mix of gold or lead bars. There is a place at the end of the level where you can turn these lead bars into gold but nowhere to insert them to finish the level, the level actually ends after a usual finish trigger after completing a trap room making collecting the bars optional like one of the cleverly hidden secrets I managed to find. Definitely recommended !" - John (19-May-2024)
"Neutral
  • There are many gold bars to collect (and some lead ones to goldify) like in TR1, however these ones don't seem to be used for anything. I guess the act of collecting them is for bragging rights.

  • The traps definitely make up the majority of the action in this short level. Expect many spike pits, blades, and boulders to avoid. This level teaches you to be paranoid of any pickup that's out in the open!
  • As the title might suggest, expect plenty of simean foes to take down, although crocodiles and tigers also team up against Lara.
  • While leaning into the TR1 vibes, the visuals look great in their own way. This is in no small part due to the inclusion of a modest skybox, and the interesting architure that quickly outgrows its TR1 predecesor.
Time: 39 minutes | Difficulty: Hard | Rating: 8.5/10" - JesseG (17-May-2024)
"While we'll never know what the official take on this level might have looked like, I think it's quite fair to say that the author has made a very fitting replacement here. Even Lara losing her weapons on her way down to the lair. The level design is quite ingenious I thought, lots of side passages connecting the main areas, and overall it follows the original sketch very closely. It's running on the TR4 engine but it does feel like a TR1 level with a few added extras (not too sure what to make of Lara's walking animation though), and definitely worth checking out. I came out with eight gold bars, which isn't too shabby I guess. 30 minutes, 1 secret. 05/24" - Treeble (05-May-2024)
"The visuals and the atmosphere are really great. Some traps will catch you off guard, which is also great. Many enemies (not excessive and not in hordes) but we are well equipped to get rid of them quickly. Exploration is a big asset of the game, but most of it is optional. You can just take the obvious route and get done with the level fast, but this feels extremely disappointing. So, I recommend that you explore the map fully and find all 10 bars. And here comes another disappointment: nothing to do with them and no reward whatsoever. lol Took me 1:15 hrs with all secrets and bars. Recommended." - billie2001 (02-May-2024)
"A charming surprise release from The Cowboy, and although comparatively brief, it's still a great all-rounder. The environments and atmosphere are extremely well done and faithful to the original TR1 material, and gameplay is smooth flowing but entertaining. It offers the nostalgic look of TR1, but with the easier movements of TR4. There's nothing too difficult to accomplish (although a couple of the trap sequences might take a couple of tries), so this should be the ideal choice for those raiders looking for something with adequate entertainment value, but that won't leave them frustrated at any point. Also for a change, Lara simply gets to take the gold bars home with her instead of using them." - Ryan (02-May-2024)
"I had just finished the "Temple of the Midas Hands" by Opaque79 and I thought, why not play this other new Midas level. And it was indeed a good combo. The level info page says it's based on some work for Unfinished Business, it would be interesting to know more. Here you'll find a lot of reckless animal shooting, which I'm getting less and less comfortable with these days, but the level is sooo gorgeous that I really thought this would be a 10/10/10/10 for me. I felt the same sense of wonder that I had back then when I discovered TR4, or the Nevada gorges in TR3... As there are several ways to proceed into the lair of the monkeys, which is like a troglodyte maze, you really get the feeling that the level is super huge. The textures are so beautiful, and as it revolves around the Midas hands, it was a good idea to spread these piles of jewels around and have alleys paved in gold. There is also this sense of being somewhere far removed (I like having dark skies or totally closed rooms for this reason). Really, to me it's near perfect. But...! Why, why this abrupt ending, even if you didn't even visit the last remaining rooms ? Globally, I think that the very last part had some problems. The Midas hand is there, sure, but it's even not clear what it's doing and the video animation is really weird. When I first ended the level, I was frustrated at not having seen what was inside the other last rooms so I reloaded and it turned out they were just difficult moves again (another timed run with fire and a nasty double teeth door) and honestly, if I know it's not doing anything more and I'm going to end the level right away, I'm not wanting to give time for stressfull matters. Because finally, it turns out the gold bars you collect (if you get the 10 of them it means Lara is carrying 120 kg of gold in her backpack ;) ) are absolutely not necessary to complete the level, which means you can miss a lot of puzzles, which means also that some very technical moves (that means annoying, to me) are also not so vital in the end. In fact, the secrets are far more important to collect - and one of them is in a super nice room that you shouldn't miss. All of this is a bit confusing so I'm putting 8 for the gameplay/puzzles. But apart from that I found it to be a pure gold bar :) ! I found it a bit challenging ; I'm a slow raider (stopping by to watch the landscapes and sometimes going all the way back to see if I didn't miss something) and it took me a bit more than 1 hour." - OrFractal (30-Apr-2024)
"What does the Cowboy hope to achieve with this mindless firing? It could indeed be called a shooter level. We never need to collect those bars, we get nothing for doing so, and for the first time in 28 years the Midas hand was optional - you may not even notice it is here. I like to imagine the skeleton with magnums is Pierre from a different timeline, it would be good to fight him on the way tho - but I guess the plot doesn't need it so much. But you better find those magnums for the final boss. Now stop and look around. It's a beautiful, atmospheric map with a straightforward progress so take a breath and relax, cause even combat here allows so. Recommended." - DJ Full (29-Apr-2024)
