Reviewer's comments |
"If you're after a spooky TRLE you can't go wrong with this one, I had an absolute blast
playing this one! Plenty of WTF moments (in a good way) with spooky moments and a generous
dose of humour sprinkled in there too! Loved what the builder did with Winston and Lara, it
was hilarious! Was a little strange playing as Werner Von Croy but I welcomed the change and
the narrative provided was more than fitting for that change. If you haven't played this get
it played already! Could not recommend this level more!" - Feats (04-Oct-2023) |

"Okay, this level is bittersweet, dark, crazy, disturbing, brutal, funny, unique, shocking and brilliantly
masterful, love it! Definitely a Hall of Fame TRLE for me (!), unfortunately some reviewers don't appreciate
the effort of the author, scandalous. ;)" - Crofti (20-Aug-2023) |

"Although it looks a bit crude with blocky textures and square Lara's Home level layout, it creates a good atmosphere and is short fun. The spider in the basement was annoying, because you can't kill it, but it will kill you immediately. Maybe the lighting could have been more versatile. I found some of the macabre things legitimately unsettling. It's a nice little freak show." - tuxraider (19-Dec-2022) |

"A very original spooky level. It has a good and well implemented story, some impressive
customised effects and one of the best spooky atmosphere ever seen in a custom level. The
gameplay per se is a typical home level one, consisting of keys/doors/levers, but saved by
its shortness, the story and the atmosphere. Recommended." - billie2001 (09-Dec-2022) |

"A perfectly fitting Halloween level and while not very inspired in terms of gameplay or setting, all those little and larger
effects, enemies and objects make it worth to play this game, some minor issues did not change that. The atmosphere is
very good despite the rather worn-out setting, audios and cams supported it quite nicely, and despite the darkness I think
this was not too bad overall especially as plenty of flares are provided and the darkness didn't really hinder the
progression, rather did it support the atmosphere.. Finished in 20 minutes with the three (rather easy) secrets as another
nice addition." - manarch2 (27-Nov-2022) |

"Short but genius. Atmospheric and scary. It was fun to play it and find out every reference from Tomb Raider games.
I only wish the end was less abrupt with a kind of spooky cutscene." - Level NextGen (26-Nov-2022) |

"Short and sweet! Well not so much of the sweet maybe lol because while personally i enjoy a
trap filled manor level, this one has a very dark and gory horror theme to it.
Young Lara has been possessed and your mission as you play as von croy is to find body parts
in order to start some kind ritual and appease this demon. Gameplay revolves around the
typical finding keys and levers etc to open up more rooms or areas but what you'll find in
these areas are mini challenges that need to accomplished in order to complete your quest
such as timed run in the freezer, a pushable object task, boulders and spike traps to avoid
and get past, jump scares and surprise enemy attacks and also some very clever kill set ups
and personally some comedy moments lol at least i found it funny anyway! The negatives for
me was the short length, the lack of much colour or lighting, the lack of variety in
textures as it uses mostly the same ones from the original tr3 mansion and the fact that you
cant explore any of the outside for example. Be prepared for a very dark house where you
will need a lot flares to see where your going at times but also prepare yourself and your
nerves for a scary but enjoyable little escapade full of imagination and amusing scenes.
Certainly one id happily replay for the thrills." - John (20-Nov-2022) |

"Here's a spooky and unsettling piece of the
macabre, aptly befitting the spooky season
(which has now passed, I know). I do
somewhat disagree with Torry's review, but
we all free to interpret something that we
did or did not like, even if the thoughts
are still a bit too fresh in our minds. This
is just a game after all, not the future of
humanity. Anyway, the gameplay here is
mostly straightforward and revolves around
item hunts and switch-pulling, but the gory
atmosphere throughout is hugely effective,
although the more gruesome scenes might
scare away younger raiders. Playing as Von
Croy renders you weaponless, but all of the
enemies are rather easily avoidable so that
you don't need them and plenty of flares are
provided to counteract the dark
surroundings. It was a shame that the final
sequence was little more than outrunning
everything that moves, but this was still a
well done spooky piece." - Ryan (13-Nov-2022) |

"A fun, grotesque short level with decent visuals and great atmosphere. Yes, it's gory, but
not excessively (though I guess everybody has their own limit), need I remind you that TRLE
has seen levels with like, boiled babies or something? This is not the case here, and I'm
also glad to see that no bunnies were harmed or covered in blood in a cliché way. I'm also
not a fan of the enemies, but some gameplay and animation ideas were pretty neat (my
favourites are the library, the kitchen and the pool area). I'd skip the Lara-faced enemies
and the level would feel less like Scary Movie and more like A scary movie while still
keeping its tongue-in-cheek spirit. It was nice to play as Von Croy for a change, he seems
to have made a very succesful recovery and is now able to do backflips and stuff. The escape
with the Iris is... intense, but quite short, then we get an abrupt end - maybe there would
have been a proper epilogue (at least I wish there was) if it wasn't for the time
constraints." - Mortensmor (12-Nov-2022) |

"A very nice level, perfectly possible to play without flares. I recommend to replace your dying LCD before you write nonsense and harm people. Thank you." - DJ Full (12-Nov-2022) |

"On thankfully rare occasions a custom level will ignite such a negative reaction that the
player will feel compelled to give it without delay a scathing review with correspondingly
low scores. My own example of this was one of the 2006 BtB levels if anyone cares to check
behind me. My review of it was so uncharacteristically caustic, in fact, that Michael
rejected it on the spot. Undaunted, I toned down my language a bit and slightly boosted
the scores, and even though Michael begrudgingly posted the revision, he grumbled that it
might so discourage the builder that he'd never take the time to produce and release
another level (and to my knowledge he didn't, although I'm not convinced I can take the
sole blame for that). Anyway, I didn't find The Perils Ahead to be one of those levels.
Yes, it's dark, and as everyone knows I hate dark levels, and some of the gameplay
elements are distastefully macabre, but it's well constructed and tells a decent story,
and it's certainly appropriate for the Halloween season. Plenty of flares are available,
more than you'll ever need, and although you're never provided a weapon you have no real
need for one. The only enemies are a dog that in my case got stuck in a wall and a mummy
that you can easily avoid awakening, although there are encounters with maggots (with a
practical way of dealing with them) and bat swarms (about which you can do nothing but
grin and wait for them to go away). Progression is fairly straightforward, finding a key
here and placing it there, and you get to play as Von Croy for a change instead of as
Lara. There's nothing here of award-winning quality, but I found it to be a worthwhile
raid." - Phil (08-Nov-2022) |

"Sorry but I found this level to be plain stupid. I think the most stupid aspect of it was Lara's head and face on the enemies and that rolling ball. Then I have my personal dislikes. I detest Home levels, they have been done to death. I hate Young Lara levels and am not fond of Von Croy either. Then let me not get started on the darkness here. Yes I know, there are plenty of flares scattered about but good lord, you had to use them constantly just so that you did not miss an important key or switch. Then we have the morbid collection of body parts to place on the pentagram to get that final key to exit the level. Sorry but I do not find this sort of thing entertaining at all. I found all three secrets but this is what happens when you are forced to use flares constantly." - Torry (06-Nov-2022) |

"I completely disagree with Torry's review. This is supposed to be a Halloween level and I
think it was really nicely executed with Croft Manor in a completely different style (not
necessarily black and white but still in a dark manner). The gameplay was really short with
finding keys and levers mainly however certain cameos like unification and reboot Lara made
me laugh really hard and I think it was nicely executed with a bit of horroresque touch by
slicing reboot's Lara head. Other objects such as Lara's head as a rolling ball or resized
head were really scary indeed. Overall I think this is a really good level perfect for
Halloween to turn off the light and play it in darkness. Great job Caesum :)" - Kubsy (06-Nov-2022) |

"Man, that was some crazy sh... poop, to put it decently. :D 10 out of 10, because it does
what it's supposed to do. Despite being pretty short and easy, this level gives a unique
and unsettling experience perfect for Halloween evening. It's always nice to see other
playable characters, especially when the roles are reversed and our main protagonist
becomes the villain. Yes, young Lara has always been creepy in the FMVs but here she goes
completely nuts. The sepia color scheme and audio effects only boost the atmosphere and
the madness that the player needs to escape from. Long-time TR fans can also find some
neat and
funny jokes or easter eggs here and there. Especially those who are not fond of latest
official games should be satisfied. ;D There isn't actually any ending cutscene but I do
understand that the 2-week
time limit may have not allowed the author to create one and I'm impressed by fantastic
job he did in such a short time anyway. I love Forgotten Remnants, which is Caesum's
previous project and was pleasantly surprised to see another level of his, especially
after so many years. I adore Your creativity, dude, so please, keep it up! :)
There was only one glitch I came across regarding crouching - remember that Von Croy can
roll out from the hole just like in TR5, which wasn't mentioned in readme. You probably
won't be able to get out by hanging on hands." - TombRadek (02-Nov-2022) |

"Short, yet very enticing horror tale set in Lara's mansion. I must say I enjoyed every
minute of it. The atmosphere is dark (many flares scathered around) and somewhat hazy, which
serves the plot just right. all the "critters" make Von Croy's (yes, we play with Von Croy,
as Lara seems to have chosen the dark path) search for the Iris a living hell, but you can
deal with all of them easily, as they're more something that the atmosphere wants and needs.
There are many wow moments, as in "what happened here moments". Even the rain unfalls
instead of falling. Plenty of good ideas, and I do indeed recommend it in the genre." - Jorge22 (02-Nov-2022) |

"A very nice and short level, perfect for Halloween evening. The game is set in Lara's
mansion, and it focuses on solving puzzles. It has spooky atmosphere. There are plenty of
creative ideas that are often quite crazy! For example, I really liked the idea of a sound
hint for the key or the idea of Winston farting :D As you can see, the level offers a dose
of humour besides the creepiness. Despite all of this the gameplay is pretty basic most of
the time. The visuals are good. I didn't notice any hiccups in that regard. The architecure
is quite simple. The level is kept in sepia style, which is unusual and provides a different
kind of atmosphere than other horror levels. I liked the contrast in lighting between the
dark corners and the bright, goldish places. All in all, it's a really cool level, with a
creepy layout and a dose of humour. Recommended!" - BlackWolfTR (02-Nov-2022) |

"Apart from the broken wall switch sound a perfect Halloween level, game duration under 1 hour. Young Lara
has gone completely insane or possessed after the events on the island (Tomb Raider Chronicles), can
Werner von Croy help her? The main task is to get some body parts and help (known) people. The level has
some creepy but also funny parts, the look which consists mainly of brown tones creates a whole
atmosphere of its own. The very high darkness could be a problem for some players, although there are
really enough torches to find. Caesum's second level was really fun and yes I got scared too! :)" - vandit (01-Nov-2022) |
