Reviewer's comments
"Quite simple. Two areas, upper and lower. You see them early so the game is mainly about solving how to get from one to the other, with some surprises on the way. One jump eluded me for it felt like a skip. On the other hand the final cave had a skip of a long path which confused me before I deciphered the intention. The colors were not my cup of tea, I wouldn't e.g replay the game for immersion as I think it's possible to make a more convincing night setting (the main two ideas feel quite organic though). I have a feeling this will get forgotten in time, but it won't hurt to play it either." - DJ Full (01-Sep-2024)
"First BtB2024 level I venture into and a great start indeed. The whole setting is huge and impressive and the game is largely about exploring the place to open it up piece by piece. The Sphinx room looks fantastic, the scene when you trigger the waterflow is breathtaking and the various mirror rooms very pretty (although there did not seem to be a puzzle element about them - they are just there for the looks). Only few enemies here and easily dealt with. Secrets are sneakily hidden (found only 2 of the 3) and you get a brief boss arena fight at the end. The only thing I found a bit odd is that those glass walls mostly did not look like walls at all, just an invisble barrier, but that is a minor issue in a grand and beautiful adventure. (95 min, 2/3 secrets)" - MichaelP (01-Sep-2024)
"So it’s back to Egypt again, and based on the story for this level, even Lara’s getting kind of sick of it. Hashtag relatable. This time, she’s looking for a golden book, which sounds like it would be a pain to read. Imagine lugging that thing with you on the bus. Or even just reading it in bed. Speaking of bed, it’s a nighttime level, which I guess makes sense based on the name. It does make for a bit of a dark and dreary level, though. At least the architecture is nice overall. The whole level is set inside a temple, which gets slightly repetitive, but there are some nice rooms here. A lot of them are very large, though, and there’s generally not a lot of gameplay in them. You’ll run through a lot of them just doing one thing before leaving, so they often feel underutilized. The gameplay is generally very simple and straightforward, and this is one of the shorter BtB 2024 levels at less than 50 minutes. It’s divided into two halves. In the first half, you’re searching for three keys, and there’s a certain amount of non-linearity as you explore a small hub area and try to find the correct paths. After collecting and using the keys, you get to explore a room with a sphinx. This is a fairly impressive-looking room (and I like how you can get a teaser of it long before you get to actually explore it), but it’s a perfect example of how underutilized the large rooms are in this level: you essentially just have to go down a side path to pick up a key and then go down to the bottom to use another key, and then you leave and never come back. All that buildup and you spend five minutes tops in that room (and that’s if you bother exploring to find all pickups). The level ends with the most anticlimactic boss fight of the competition so far, as you fight Seth’s cousin Setha (not to be confused with Seth’s other cousin, Sethb), who dies in seconds to the revolver. A short and concise ending to a short and concise level, I suppose. Well, I have another six levels left to play, so I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Lara, but we’ll be off to Egypt again soon. Maybe we’ll find a golden bookcase for your golden book next time." - Magnus (31-Aug-2024)
"What I liked about the level: 1) The cool colours used in the evening atmosphere and rain in the desert is a refreshing change. 2) I like how there’s always something to do so you’re never really stuck on next steps. 3) The outdoor rain bouncing so delicately in the evening courtyard was absolutely gorgeous. 4) The Pharaoh cavern with the waterfall was stunning. 5) Alternate ways that open as you progress is what I consider brilliant builder design. 6) The glass floor room… stunning. 7) Guiding the player with different lighting as a clue to progress is good design as well. 8) I liked how the enemies were left visible so you could see where you’ve been before. 9) Thank you to the builder for safe spots to kill Ahmets in waterfilled rooms. 10) I liked how the Horus doors were actually used as doors instead of inanimate decoration. 11) The use of pickups to help guide player progress is good level design. What I didn’t like or could be improved: 1) While looking nice, not sure the purpose of the large side by side mirror room as the rope and key item were visible in the actual room and invisible in the mirror room. The exact opposite of what a mirror room normally shows. 2) A small glitch getting out of a sloped crawlspace. Lara would stand up in the crawlspace and not crawl out. The only way to get out was with the “new” method of rolling out forward. 3) Just a wishlist but could have used a clue how to access an upper area in the outside courtyard for a scarab item. Conclusion: I simply loved this level. This is a real gem. So much to do in clever ways that never got boring even though tasks were simple. Set in compact environments where exploration in stunningly textured areas with beautiful lighting that never felt like backtracking. Proof that a level does not have to be “big” to be fantastic. Well done mystery builder. Suitable for average players." - Lizard Queen (26-Aug-2024)
"Perhaps I've been spoiled by the overall excellence of this year's BtB competition, but I just didn't have as much fun with this one as with the others I've thus far played. I looked unsuccessfully for an audio file to delete so I wouldn't have to endure that damnable thunder, and that started me off in a bad mood. I'm not partial to dark levels, as everyone knows, especially those that take place in driving rain, but as the game wore on I grew to appreciate the builder's technical knowhow more and more. Everything is laid out quite logically, little backtracking is required (unless you count the spiral shimmy shaft that you have to go up and down and back up, with the getting down part being a bit buggy), the enemies are few and thus the weapons and ammo pickups are rationed accordingly. Gameplay isn't exactly a walk in the park, but neither is it frustratingly difficult. A solid level that may have been better received as a separate standalone." - Phil (22-Aug-2024)
"Congratulations to the generous builder! Thank you for this great level. Only three minor things remove from this , and mostly because of the competition (otherwise I wouldn't bother deducting even a single point): 1 - There are a few large beautiful areas with very little actual gameplay (including one which you end up having to pick through with a fine-toothed comb). 2 - I didn't particularly feel I was in an Egyptian level. Everything was beautiful, built using Egyptian assets (obviously), but only by the end did some of the Egyptian atmosphere shine through. 3 - This is light on puzzles, as progression is a succession of "fetch quests" and levers -- some traversal is puzzle-like in a delightful way, making up for this. I could spend the whole afternoon listing the positives, though. This is a beautiful, must-play level: I loved it." - MigMarado (21-Aug-2024)
"One of the weaker and shorter entries in an admittedly very strong field this year. Nothing stood out to me, unlike for some other reviewers it seems. Mirror rooms and enemies not fully utilised. Straightforward gameplay and not particularly imaginative landscaping. Secrets were easily found." - Adrian (21-Aug-2024)
"This is mostly set in a temple, but breaks from the standard Egypt theming by being set during a stormy, rainy night. Texturing is good throughout and the lighting supports the theme well and is varied enough to avoid getting repetitive despite the darker theme. There's also plenty of impressive large scale rooms and designs, even if I didn't find any of it truly stunning. The unique atmosphere created by the theme is the strongest asset of this map, and gives it a somewhat chill feel despite the night setting. There's also some nice use of mirrors for floors and surreal effects (despite one oddly used one I'll cover later).
This is another level that sticks to the fundamentals and provides solid general TR4 gameplay. It's not especially hard, but it's quite non-linear for most of it's duration (after the oddly combat filled intro minutes) with a lot of ways to go, however it all starts to come together soon enough, and the many seemingly unique options start to narrow down to a few. While the main focus is exploration there's some platforming challenges and quite a focus on boulder traps (almost Sabatu levels, which I guess isn't spoiling anything when they're not actually on the builder list for this BTB?). I felt it lost a little steam towards the end, with some large rooms with only a couple of tasks, but it still manages to end just before it actually overstays it's welcome. There's also a room that appears to be a mirror puzzle, but the mirror doesn't actually have a gameplay purpose, which makes me think something was cut for time there. The secrets are a little easy, but at least I found them organically while exploring and not when I was stuck and trying to find the way further like in the last level I played, one of them also provides the Revolver which is the only non-pistol weapon provided, so there's at least one good reward out of it. Overall a pretty great level, although the take on the theme is what really pulls it together and carries it." - Mman (18-Aug-2024)
"Not to be pedantic, but the general concept of this level seems a little dissonant, as does it’s starting sequence: The temple we’re about to explore, sure is moonlit from the outside, but it’s very square hallways with consistently large ceilings are hardly touched by actual moonlight and instead illuminated in the obligatory red-and-blue scheme. While the level starts with the most pleasantly melancholic soundtrack the package has to offer (it’s also used at the beginning of “Mystery of the Dark Pyramid“ as well as in “High Priest” - and would have perfectly fit the nighttime scenery we encounter just a few meters away…), the immersion is immediately broken by a boulder that is thrown after us and an annoying scorpion attack as the befitting welcoming. When we go outside, the ambience track of the thunderstorm keeps the same very loud volume (no transition) and we realize it was fooling us all along, because there’s no visual trace of actual rain.
Inside the temple, the atmosphere benefits greatly from a little reverb. The architecture is made up of a network of very large underground halls and connecting hallways, which can sometimes appear very empty and/or mazy because of their sheer size and similarity in appearance. While the gameplay tasks are rather linear, it doesn’t help the player navigate the map that the tasks are as spread out like i.e. the water is far away from the scales. Not only did I run around aimlessly a fair bit, cuz I didn’t memorize the map layout right away. I was also stuck with the pyramid key for a while, because: what a bad spot to put a keyhole (almost camouflaged) sorry! There are also some more memorable rooms like: a beautiful mirrored hall! Now, what boss could await us there? – Aha. A single scorpion… The room where the final boss fight takes place is fairly impressive. But the boss initially hides behind some pillars, only to be disposed of in mere seconds with the revolver, because of very low HP. – Perhaps using more broken geo, objects and effects like fog could have counteracted the feeling of emptiness that comes with building big, square rooms. And then, there’s always one thing to make everything more interesting, aesthetically and gameplay-wise, which the builder does quite well: flood rooms!
Conclusion: Given the overall very high quality of the BTB24 competition, this review may have focused on the objective imperfections of this level. Nonetheless, it provides an atmospheric and fun raid for one sessions or two that is recommended to all.

"From the title, you may well be expecting something a little gloomy. Well yes, in some respects it’s not the lightest of levels, but it really is most atmospheric and lovely looking. Gameplay-wise it’s on the easier side, with nothing of great difficulty to achieve, but it’s varied and entertaining enough to please and doesn’t outstay its welcome. Another very pleasant entry in the competition." - Jay (16-Aug-2024)
"Another addictive game to play and the texturing/atmosphere was excellent as well; nice to finally get away from the brown haze - which has obviously been washed away by all that rain. A refreshing departure from the norm." - Dick (11-Aug-2024)
"This is another level which is sure to be among the top contenders for this competition, the bar this year is so high and we are incredibly spoiled with such amazing levels. The rainy atmosphere is quite welcome for a change of scenery, and what you get here is a massive sandboxy-style level which I have to say, I thought I would hate (not a big fan of non-linearity) but surprisingly I found my way through to the end alone. There are no Stuck thread at the time I' writing this review so take that as a voucher for the level design quality, things may not seem so obvious at first and while apparently there are overwhelming choices of path to pursue, you eventually start recognizing the landmarks as you slowly advance towards the end. The open design makes it hard to gauge your actual progress, but so long as you keep seeing new areas, you are making progress. I didn't find any additional weapons but funnily enough thought all the secrets were somehow easier than the main course. Definitely recommended. 80 minutes, 3 secrets. 07/24" - Treeble (11-Aug-2024)
"Neutral
  • Although the adventure ends with a face-off against Seth, overall the combat is pretty light. I never found any additional weapons (just some revolver ammo) but was fine getting through the various crocodiles and harpies with just the pistols.
  • The traps are also lightly used, mainly boulders that try to catch Lara off guard.
Liked
  • There are a couple of simple puzzles to work through, such as the water scales, pushing a block back and forth, and finding hidden objects in a mirrored corridor.
  • This entry offers a couple of large and elaborately structured areas, one outdoor pyramid area and one indoor sphinx area that have plenty of nooks and crannies to explore.
Time: 1 hour 7 minutes | Difficulty: Easy | Rating: 7.75/10 - Good" - JesseG (27-Jul-2024)
"There is not much to say about this level. It's not linear, but you can't really get lost either. I really liked the actions as they were very varied. You didn't always have to repeat the same thing. Otherwise quite short compared to other entries, but not worse, with well-built rooms and interesting ideas. I really liked the moonlight atmosphere. That was something new." - nad (26-Jul-2024)
"Visually this is a really well done level, texturing and lighting are of a high standard and the titular moonlight atmosphere is conveyed rather well. However the gameplay didn't grab me at all here and felt somewhat neglected at times. A mirror room where you don't need the mirror at all, some gameplay sequences that are skippable (the major part of the sphinx room and a raising block whose function is a mystery to me), many underused rooms where you just enter, pick up/place an item and leave, thus lacking challenge and immersion - even the boss fight against Seth was less climatic then it could've been (no sound?), and also very easy granted you've found the revolver. That aside, every other aspect of this game is actually quite professionally done and just screams for more gameplay to get involved. Finished in 35 minutes with all three secrets found." - manarch2 (24-Jul-2024)
"A brooding, stormy night provides the backdrop for this moderately challenging entry into the contest. The moonlit atmosphere works really well and provides a nice change from all the brightly lit levels so far. Aside from there being a little too much running through large, spacious areas and a slight lack of conventional puzzles, I really liked this level for the nice flow it had. The tasks might be on the simpler side, but the entertainment value remains high throughout thanks to the constant feeling of moving forward. Even the Seth battle was noticeably less difficult this time round. Another strong entry." - Ryan (21-Jul-2024)
"A solid BtB entry. The gameplay is enjoyable and quite easy. Nothing really oustanding though. The tasks are simple and not demanding. Some parkour, traps and combat. The level is centered around the main area and from there we can enter different passages in any order so it's non-linear. The design is decent. The textures are properly applied, the lighting is well-done and the architecture is good. Some rooms could have benefited with some more decorations to make them less empty. Overall, it's a short, pleasant and fine raid without much diffuclty. Recommended." - BlackWolfTR (20-Jul-2024)
"Although non-linear and pretty soon with many tasks at hand, it's not difficult to follow since it doesn't let you go far if you visit an area prematurely. Only got stuck once in the Sphinx area because I didn't see a not very visible triangular opening, but thankfully not for long. Beautiful visuals and good flow, I enjoyed it a lot. A bit less than 2 hours and all secrets." - billie2001 (17-Jul-2024)
"Very well built game with interesting geometry. Unfortunately the peaceful moonlight atmosphere is ruined by a noisy storm, and I admit I renamed the 105.ogg file to live in peace (sorry). The gameplay is quite intricated and I had to watch a video walk in some occasions to find my way. I think this is a traditional and enjoyable raid. Maybe not a candidate to win the competition but it's an interesting entry anyway." - Teone (07-Jul-2024)
"Another beautiful level here! As the title suggests more of a night time setting here but it gives it a dreamlike aesthetic. Gameplay flowed for the most part, only time I got stuck was when I was looking for a well hidden lever. Would wholeheartedly recommend this level though a joy to play!" - Feats (06-Jul-2024)
"Very nice level containing a mixture of a little bit everything. Gameplay is rather non- linear filled with item and switch hunting, and fairly simple but nonetheless entertaining jumping tasks and puzzles. Environments are also well-decorated, including decent texturing, lighting, and object placement. Even though the level may not contain any big surprises or awe-inspiring moments, it is overall, really well-crafted and I thoroughly enjoyed it." - Samu (04-Jul-2024)
