Reviewer's comments
"Here's a marathon re-imagining that takes the original TR1 experience to a whole new level. While there are a few sections that do look remarkably similar to their original counterparts, the majority of the gameplay here is fresh and new. In particular, Sanctuary of the Scion has been given a mesmerising makeover, Natla Technologies is a new level in its own right and I appreciated the different take on progression in the Obelisk of Khamoon level. It's definitely rather challenging throughout, with countless timed runs and trap sequences plus more enemies that any raider could ever wish for. There's plenty to sink your teeth into (not to mention the secret quests which are extensive at times), but I do have a few criticisms. Firstly (at least in the Atlantis sections), I wouldn't have minded a bit more ammo than what I ended up with. After expending all my powerful weaponry taking down all those Atlanteans, I arrived at the final boss battle with next to no ammunition so I ended up defeating Natla with only my pistols and eating up rather a lot of medipacks. Secondly, a lot of the trap sequences were either far too repetitive or sneaky for their own good, often resulting in annoying unintended deaths. Finally, the texturing was a bit repetitive and crude in quite a few places, but there were also some wonderful looking rooms like the main area in the Palace of Kings level or the entire Egypt section. Still, my overall impression was favourable so if you're up for it, definitely give this a go. Not for the faint-hearted though." - Ryan (20-Jul-2025)
"Before archiving the Part 1 release on my personal HDD, I did a quick check and noticed the author has implemented additional changes for those levels in this Complete Edition, such as lighting changes, a new outfit for Peru, and the added TR1X features such as a solid rate of 60 FPS. I didn't play through the entire first half a second time however, but generally speaking my thoughts for those levels apply for the second half as well. There's a bit of a dichotomy when it comes to environments, sometimes they look bland but when they look great, they're absolutely great. The vibrant and coloful (although apparently AI generated) textures in Egypt made for such an unexpected change in setting that I didn't know I needed. The Sanctuary of the Scion takes things to a whole different dimension and Natla's Mines is somewhat oversized all things considered. You can expect to die and reload a lot, it's not even funny at times when you overcome a trap sequence after many tries only to learn there was another one just around the corner, so you never really feel safe in these levels. While it lacks the charm of the original levels (which is no doubt due to nostalgia factors alone), it's a fun take on levels all too familiar to us. I've spent the last two weeks on this release alone, but granted I've been writing a walkthrough for the new levels while also trying to juggle other hobbies during the ever limited spare time life allows me. 4h15min, 8 secrets. (Combined total: 8h15min, 19 secrets). 07/25" - Treeble (06-Jul-2025)
"Bugs/Functional Issues
  • There is a door in the Palace Midas level that did not open for me, but Lara could move through it as if it wasn't there. This led to a secret area so I don't know if this was intentionally sneaky or if something went awry.
Neutral
  • I have mixed feelings about the texturing. There is a lot of wallpapering present, but there are also areas that have beautiful higher quality textures used, especially in the Egyptian areas.
  • Similarly, the architecture toggles between simpler geometry and interesting architectural moments, such as the Midas statue.
Liked
  • There are many, many traps to dodge here. Get ready for lots of boulders, spikes, lightning strikes, and flames to test your medpack inventory. It may be a lot for some players, and some trap sequences took me quite a few tries, but overall I enjoyed the challenge.
  • On top of that there are also quite a few enemies, and my ammunition was drained quickly. I would have appreciated more ammo but I still appreciated the combat.
  • Even though this is a revisit of the plot and locales from TR1, every level is restructured, so it hardly feels redundant. On top of that, there are many creative liberties taken. One example is turning the raid of Natla's office into its own level.
  • There are also a few nice puzzles thrown in, most involving switches and pushable blocks, but there are other concepts such as a mirror room.
Time: 9 hour 53 minutes | Difficulty: Very Hard | Rating: 8.5/10" - JesseG (26-Sep-2024)
"Gameplay was quite straight forward, not hard at all, as it is the first time I've played completely without need of walkthrough (and there is none yet). Though some hard traps, and need to save a lot, but I never got stuck. Some places, like Map #13 took me longer, as in the beginning I didn't knew how to procceed - there is also a bit of backtracking. Overall, was very good. Lights are amaizing, considering it is TR1X. Secrets quite well hidden, I found very few of them. Puzzles are very wise and special. Overall perfect design, is a must to play. Took me 12 hours to finish all (netto game)" - gao-ou-fan (17-Sep-2024)
"Wow, what a re-imagining this is. It kept the original game aspects but made them fresh and new. Is it really like Sabatu's? In some parts yes but not enough to give you any sort of edge if you had already played that one. This is a very difficult game to get through and took me a good three weeks playing some three or four hours a day. You die a lot. The platforming is well thought out, the timed runs tight and the battles fearsome. Unlike the original game where you are confronted with one or two opponents at a time, here you will find many more. Bats attack with 15 or more, raptors four or more, centaurs half a dozen and the list goes on. The final battle is nightmarish with not only the spawn of Natla to deal with, you have those red flying centaur things to contend with as well and there are spikes, holes in the floor and fires to avoid. I LOVED IT!!!!! You need quick fingers on the keyboard and save, save, save. Enemies have a life bar when you attack them which is nice with the harder to kill enemies but I do think the Uzis had an upgrade to 45 calibre as they hit hard so find and use those Uzis especially in the final levels. Good luck to all the intrepid raiders who take this one on." - Torry (15-Aug-2024)
"A true joy to complete. This man took the most salient parts of each TR1 level and lovingly built his own imagining of it. Very enjoyable, not absurdly punishing like others but a great challenge without having to save every 0.3 seconds. Very creative use of textures, puzzles (including some effects I have never seen using the TR1 engine). Bravo!" - KeinMitleid (21-Jul-2024)
"To answer the main question: yes it is different than Sabatu. Crafted and animated in its original way which often surprised me with the approach taken. Sabatu is probably more universal while Jaay's more specific, both of which can be a good thing. I'd say Sabatu gets upper hand with less filler. I'd also say play both, or watch them played if you don't like hard games. As I said on trcustoms: "Better and fuller than the demo. A worthy parallel to Sabatu's and Angel's TR1, easier than the former, harder than the latter. Totally immersive and without much annoying stuff (if you play for fun and not like me...)." But I see both authors were updating their works... oh sweet Lore what now, should I replay both things again? Aw, hell no... or... or maybe..." - DJ Full (13-Jul-2024)
