Reviewer's comments |
"it's certainly one of the best TR3s I've ever played and it's exactly the same length as the
original. As always leo being extremely creative, original when creating his projects and
worth the wait. so far the industrial setting has been my favorite and has a unique and
macabre atmosphere, the gameplay may not be to everyone's taste but I'm sure if you like a
game that mixes realism with surreal you will have fun here, unfortunately I played without
sound because TR3Main does not work on my pc with and remains unresolved, even so I played
and moved on and it was fun, recommended to all....”" - PedroCroft_ (08-Feb-2025) |

"An epic and well made 2nd installment of the Folklorist Diary series here! It was a bit
longer than I was expecting going in but I'm not complaining! Each level sections was unique
and provided interesting new challenges along the way. Only one thing in the game I didn't
really vibe with was a timed run section with platforms going up and down towards the end,
probably more of a skill issue my end haha! But considering the length of this TRLE only
having that one minor stumbling block is pretty good in my eyes. Couldn't recommend this
level set enough though and looking forward to the next installment of the series :)" - Feats (06-Feb-2025) |

"One of go-to levels if you're into classics but also horror. An ambitious one which takes a lot of time. To save it, some of literal memories could be trimmed and/or moved to the middle of the plot from the end meant to go faster. Mind the betatesters didn't catch some issues, so watch out on your way or wait for more fixes." - DJ Full (16-Jan-2025) |

"This 17-episode marathon is truly a TR3 replacement game, one that I would gladly pay for
and one that I wouldn't mind playing again sometime, hence my scores of all 10s. I played
while writing over the course of several weeks, so I never found myself becoming bored or
wishing that it all would end. My game clock stood at almost precisely 15 hours when I
finished, so you certainly get your "money's worth." Nearly all of the segments are complex
and well laid out, not to mention presenting a healthy variety for the player, and I
experienced no bugs or glitches along the way. The few short segments are mainly enemy
battles that can test your playing skills to the max. The default gamma setting is 5, which
is the one I used, enabling me to see and enjoy the (often eye-pleasing) surroundings with
no difficulty, so the availability of flares was never an issue for me. Likewise, if you
explore all areas and take the time to look for secrets, weaponry, ammunition and health are
all in ample supply. Well worth the download (no bigger than for many single levels) and the
time it takes to play it." - Phil (28-Dec-2024) |

"I've been playing this behemoth TR3 set
alongside another epic, Another Bloody
Christmas (which I've now reviewed) and that
was probably the right choice, as this is
definitely a game to be savoured. It's
enthralling from start to finish and
gameplay remained glitch-free throughout.
Progression is mind-bending yet enjoyable,
the enemies are placed to great effect
(while not being frustrating) and the
atmosphere is completely absorbing. The
haunting sounds are a big plus. The textures
offer a refreshing change of scenery, while
the familiar looking areas do a great job of
lulling you into a false sense of security.
Everything looks pleasing too. Mind-twisting
and something completely different, not to
be missed." - Ryan (28-Dec-2024) |

"This gigantic multi-level release continues the Folklorist Diary saga in which the desired
artefact's curse has led Lara into a kind of fever-dream quest - based on old memories.
Once again the hallucinatory element is well realised by Leoc1995. The 'game' is bigger
than TR3 but still maintains a high play standard throughout without ever really dropping
the ball. The atmosphere is deliberately gloomy and bleak, and sometimes not particularly
enjoyable to play, for that reason. There is a general insufficiency of pickups -
particularly flares - which you will have to ration to get through. Some enemies
(particularly the horsemen) can drain you of health pretty quickly, and you may need that
health in reserve for the extensive final boss fight, so always be mindful of your health." - Dick (26-Dec-2024) |

"This is a Tomb Raider 3 set that starts in Egypt, but follows Leoc's standard of hallucinatory adventures and goes through almost every setting in the series across seventeen levels, and a couple that are basically brand new. The level of detail is high throughout, and, while the quality varies a little, it's justified by the premise somewhat (like the TR1 levels having simpler lighting). The texturing is great and manages to naturally blend all the wild shifts, and the lighting is also strong, with the simpler parts offset by the use of more colourful textures. The objects are the highlight though, with this going way beyond Leoc's previous levels to create all kind of surreal moments, and bizarre hybrids that create a mix of humour and horror; it even gets meta to break your expectations for what is even possible in TR3.
Despite the intimating amount of levels, like TR3, several of them are short boss maps, and one is a tiny transitional map (presumably for technical reasons), and average level length is between 30 minutes and an hour, so the pace stays quite brisk. I think this is the first pack I've seen to truly use TR3's level select system (I've seen it before, but I don't think it's ever been free-form like this) and you can do the mid-game segments in any order you choose; since you lose your guns for each part (although you keep all ammo and other items), the difference isn't too big, but it's nice to have it. The design is very creative and new ideas are being thrown in all the time, and, while the base level of challenge is quite high, I never got stuck for any notable length of time as the design does a great job of giving hints even when it's a little more obscure. There's also quite a bit of combat (as well as some non-combat interaction that exploits the periodic weapon loss), but you also get a ton of supplies to fight back with (even more if you find a decent amount of the secrets). It's not fully perfect, and there's the occasional slightly frustrating moment or idea that feels stretched a little too far, but there's so much going on that something completely new is very close even when not everything fully hits. A couple of the flashback areas also felt a little too close to their originals in structure, but in the long run it's almost always used as a way to cause complacency to set in before something completely wild happens. A masterpiece that pushes the surreal pseudo-horror style of Leoc's levels to their limit, and delivers one of the best sets of all time in the process. Given the implication that there are more "Folklorist" adventures to come, I wonder if there's much more that can be done with this style or if potential sequels will pivot to something else, but I'm sure it'll be great either way." - Mman (28-Nov-2024) |

"This is one of the longest TR3 levels and it is amazing. 17 levels. Some shorter, some
longer. Every one of them is well-done and fun. Lots of different themes. We get to explore
Egypt, Rome, Venice, base, even some places from the previous adventures of the author as
well as some completly unique places. The gameplay is very creative with lots of things
reused from the original games such as the minecart or the machine gun from Crash Site
level. Plenty of puzzles, parkour, traps and exploration. A few bossfights. And of course,
as befits Leoc, there are many hallucinations and spooky sequences. The design is strong as
well. The textures, the lighting, the architecture - everything is done properly and
together with audio creates immersive and often uncanny atmosphere. All in all, it's a high-
quality game that will keep you engaged for hours. One of the best of this engine.
Definitely recommended." - BlackWolfTR (26-Nov-2024) |
