Reviewer's comments
"Amazing level with an engaging storyline, great acting, cool cutscenes, varied puzzles and smooth gameplay and incredible visuals. I was surprised to see this was created with the TR4 engine, it almost feels like something that could have been done using TEN. The lighting and textures are impecable, with great attention to detail in the design of the different spaces and the animations feel smooth and polished. It was great getting to pick up all the engraved notes and find out what happened to this lost civilisation. Combining medicinal leaves with clothes to create a simpler version of a medkit adds a bit of realism to the gameplay, which is nice. And of course having the torch in the inventory is such a practical idea. The entire game is very well designed, but I specially liked the ourdoor spaces. I found the storytelling be quite engaging and make the exploring all that more interesting. All in all a magnificent adventure, eagerly waiting for Chapter 2 of this spectacular story!" - Minaru (03-Jan-2026)
"While we all wait for the promised "unified" Lara of future official games, Athos has delivered the next closest thing: classic story, Angel of Darkness-like graphics and moves, and Legend-style gameplay along with unique innovations make this a landmark level set. This is just chapter one of a longer game, but the four massive levels, complete with a home level for light exploration and mastering new moves, make this a long adventure in its own right: I spent 6+ hours total before beating the last level. This game has tremendous polish: smooth golden lighting, expertly applied textures, and attractive objects that blend in with the desert and underground atmosphere. The music and sound effects are just as carefully chosen as the many new additions to the inventory that clearly show Athos' attention to the player's experience: a manual, a journal (with the helpful keyboard hotkey "J"), and on-screen reminders about progress on the numerous collectibles throughout the levels. The aesthetic cohesiveness helps with full immersion into the game and its prequel storyline. Quite a bit of art and research went into the design here, and its a pleasure to look at. I have two suggestions for the builder in the future: 1) as other reviewers have noted, there were at times too many switches back-to- back. While the platforming challenges felt fresh and seemed to build across the four levels, I would have enjoyed less emphasis on plain switches behind doors and a greater variety of environmental or mechanical means to progress. 2) Given the amount of research on Iram (which is a perfect setting for Tomb Raider), I would have enjoyed more information about the real legends about the city. Some of the objects in the city seemed to be from wildly different millennia and religions, although the original Tomb Raider did the same thing, so this carries on that tradition in a way. The repeated wall motif from Atlantis was especially fun to see as one of many visual and gameplay connections to the classics. Also, shoutout to the best and most sensible use of the torch as an inventory item I’ve seen. Ultimately found 11/21 secrets, and killed a whopping 126 lions, snakes, crocodiles, bats, and bad guys. Looking forward to chapter 2!" - Cbl (09-Dec-2025)
"Amazing level set. It features great visuals, atmosphere, and storytelling utilizing both cutscenes and notes that you collect around the levels. Gameplay is mostly exploration-based but there is also a good amount of platforming including a really nice use of custom animations and few puzzles as well. Most of these tasks are rather easy meaning that the level suits well even the beginners I believe. I encountered a one softlock in the fourth level after filling two bowls with water, since one of the doors had closed and prevented me from continuing to the next area. However, replaying from an earlier save file resolved the problem with the softlock. Overall, it is a great and highly immersive debut level which I can easily recommend to everyone." - Samu (20-Aug-2025)
"It let me feel free, like original classic games. Superb music, gameplay, objects, new Lara moves, ambience... absolutely all. This has to be included in oficial games. So proud of the creator." - Gamernet (28-Apr-2025)
"?Pros: ? New mechanic and animations. ? Impressive level design. ? Well used space. ? Nice models and textures. ? Cutscenes with voice acting. ? Shotgun actually kills ? Well balanced ? Too many to list... ?Cons: ? It's so good I can't think of any. ?Overall: This level is chef kiss, the layout, animations, models, everything, Athos and everyone helped along did a fantastic job, they took Tomb Raider game to the next level, to professional level, that it feels a new official Tomb Raider game, even better than the original games to me. There's so much to say, the difficulty progressions is perfect, secrets didn't feel like easter eggs, I found all myself but one. Exploring felt exciting and rewarding, the new mechanic felt overwhelming when introduced, but actually felt natural while playing, even Lara's house was fun to play ( I recommend doing it before the story ), no frustration moments or puzzles, time events had enough time. Man I felt like keep playing on and on. It felt really like an official game and had the same or better experience. Now I'm spoiled, I want every TR level to follow this level standards lol. My only complaint, wish if Lara had desert theme outfit to fit the level, the sunglasses felt off, especially when swimming. I can't wait for chapter 2. Artho and all those who helped in the making of this level, thank you. This is level honorably deserves 10/10 and I wish if there was a reward system or medal to show our appreciation to authors. Best of luck on your next level!" - black horse (17-Apr-2025)
"Another dimly lighted release from yet another builder who thinks that dark is cool. That being said, everything else here reflects the mark of a seasoned professional. Unlike Jayavarman, these four levels are separate and distinct with each having its own "personality." Still, since each level was of roughly the same duration and since my total playing time was right at eight hours, it may have been better for the builder to release the segments one at a time. The opening level was quite impressive with extended exploration of the sprawling desert sands. The second level was my least favorite, with all of that running around through underground tunnels. The tour de force, in my opinion, came with the third level, perhaps the most complex of any custom level I've ever played. Without José's flawless walk to guide me along I would have been hopelessly lost in no time. Much of the same is true of the final level, which involves a great deal of underwater exploration. The tasks are many and varied, the special effects displayed in the cut scenes are top notch, and the enemies are plentiful enough to keep the player from becoming complacent in between tasks. Despite my quibbling about the lighting, this is certainly Hall of Fame material." - Phil (06-Mar-2025)
"Now, here's a debut effort that oozes professionalism throughout. Quite often first efforts that are ambitious tend to be overly so, but that is not the case here. This builder absolutely nailed it. The environments are amazing from start to finish, the atmosphere is convincingly desolate (particularly in the desert ruins level) and the gameplay an absolutely pleasure throughout. Everything flows really nicely from start to finish, despite some undoubted head-scratching moments and the required backtracking is never at any point arduous, which is much appreciated. There's also some ingenious puzzles that never try to be too obscure, which I very much enjoyed solving. What really makes this raid special is the brilliant attention to detail: the lovely object usage, the neat cutscenes that move the story along and possibly more I could mention. It did take me quite a while to get through as I was combing each area for collectibles to experience everything, but it was worth it. A real treat and I'm looking forward to Chapter Two." - Ryan (02-Mar-2025)
"I really enjoyed putting together the walkthrough for this set of levels as I played through them. The architecture and texturing are extraordinary, the gameplay is very good without too much backtracking, although I had a bit of trouble getting through the rooms with the wind currents. Still, I think there are too many extra pickups (collectibles), but always enough ammo, weapons and medikits. The environments are impressive, with a series of excellent details, the enemies are very well placed, and the cameras are always there to help you advance. A simply fantastic work that is definitely worth playing for all those fans of author levels. Thank you very much, Athos, for all these hours of great fun. Looking forward for the next release. Great!" - Jose (25-Feb-2025)
"What I liked about the level: 1) The desert vista is gorgeous without lagging. 2) Fixed cameras that actually help the player. 3) Ancient tomb that looks and feels realistic. 4) Absolutely loved the climbable intricate wrought iron texture. 5) Nice to have the collectibles screen appear when pressing the “C” key. 6) Nice little timed run with swing poles was fun and reasonably timed. 7) Another nice little complex floor and flame puzzle to expose trigger tiles also fun. 8) The smoldering cigarette in the ashtray may be a small thing but such a nice attention to detail. 9) Reusable torch, very nice and practical. 10) Another small thing but loved walking slowly through a dark corridor and suddenly wall torches light the way to the opening of double doors into a new area. 11) Beautiful indoor pool with one water texture on the surface and a different shimmery one on the walls and floor underwater. 12) Water dripping down into a well so lovely to watch. 13) Love the swingpole sequences. Very well designed and fun to traverse. 14) Not fond of enemies but exploding skeletons with pistols is so satisfying. Better yet when they jump to their death trying to get Lara. 15) Fun gameplay in the spiked column/deadly mist room. 16) Good to see consistency in climbable textures. 16) Windy column gauntlet super fun gameplay. What I didn’t like or thought could be improved: 1) Bumping into invisible walls in the Desert reduced the realism of the area. 2) Not a gamestopper but was able to climb through a wrought iron ceiling into an area above. 3) Just a wishlist but would have been nice to have flyby or camera shots of the lock locations after picking up the master cog key. 4) Another wishlist but would have preferred the option of using torch or explosive crossbow ammo instead of snuffing out the torch when crossing the fire chasm. 5) A bit unfair to expect the player to know that a closed gate will somehow automatically open only after fully traversing a fire gauntlet with no unique textured tile as indication. Spent a long time looking for a way to open the gate then reluctantly watched a video to see how it was done. 6) Never fond of forced health loss (ie. deadly mist monkey swing TIP: Stay close to one side). 7) Would prefer timer countdown screens to indicate timed levers. 8) After a while, it got a bit tiring to keep consulting a video walkthrough to figure out what to do next. 9) Considering the amount of underwater exploration, would have preferred an aqualung to make the exploration more enjoyable. 10) A lot of levers are missing camera shots of what they open making proceeding difficult to determine. 11) Would have preferred hints where to go with the many objects collected. Once again had to consult a video walkthrough to find out where to go next. Conclusion: This is a very polished TRLE level built with great care. It’s mostly an exploration level both on ground and underwater. But what made it enjoyable for me are the little things. The attention to detail changes this level from simply a “run around and pickup things” level to more of an immersive experience. If you enjoy exploration and don’t mind consulting a video walkthrough, you will really enjoy this level. Suitable for average TR players." - Lizard Queen (09-Feb-2025)
"This level set is the start what looks to be an epic series which I can't wait for the next installment of! Was so much fun playing through this level set. Each level is beautifully crafted and looks amazing, with great gameplay throughout! Had so much fun playing through this and can wholeheartedly recommend! As already stated, I wait on bated breath for Chapter 2!" - Feats (06-Feb-2025)
"Excellent debut, it speaks pro all the time. You wouldn't know it's fanmade. Sometimes it's too predictable in map design and activities, and it tends to linger for too long with one color palette, but the rewarding plot and omnipresent lore are worth it. Highly recommended and even higher with secrets." - DJ Full (03-Feb-2025)
"This impressive debut looks and feels completely professional. The visuals are stunning and the game complexity smoothly progressive. New moves, new ideas and a home level to train the player. Collecting everything is worth it, fulfilling and rewarding, although it took me 9 hours in stats to do so. Hours well spent. Highly recommended." - billie2001 (30-Jan-2025)
