Reviewer's comments
"This Tomb Raider 2 set goes through quite a few themes. To support it's variety there's some interesting texture mixes here, and they generally work, with some original concepts like an aquatic base in a Jungle. There's a clear learning curve here though, as the first couple of levels are mostly much simpler visually than what follows, but the latter half looks pretty good outside of a few more basic areas (for example, the previously mentioned jungle map has a weirdly ugly start for an otherwise good looking level). Object use supports each setting well, and the enemies are appropriate to each area. In the Tunnels map it did seem that the decorations were a bit overbrightened (I thought it might be a setting I had, but after a little experimentation it seems they are just like that), but that's the only issue I had.
Gameplay follows a similar curve to the visuals, with the first level being quite flat in structure and mostly running between switches shooting enemies, but the second level already shows improvement with far more vertical space and designs, and from the third level onwards you get some pretty large and complex spaces that are explored from various angles. Combat is the main challenge here though, with the TR2 roster used to provide plenty of enemies to shoot (as well as some Monks to ally with), along with escalation as you progress. There is a lot of equipment provided, especially if you find the secrets (which vary in quality, from interesting to basically placed on the main path). I did feel the penultimate map felt a little too close to Barkhang Monastery in concept, as it made it hard to avoid how it felt like an inferior version in comparison, outside of a couple of cool sections.
With the major theme swaps the lack of transition can make each level swap a bit jarring, but the levels themselves generally make good use of each setting, a bit more (back)story to set up the nature of each location would be nice though. In the Aquatic Base level I got stuck because of a keycard being lost (luckily I had a save not too far back when I found the problem), which DJ Full's review also mentions; this could be avoided by just putting the keycard on the ground and not tying it to an enemy drop. A route behind a fan in the same level also felt a little too hidden, although I managed to stumble across it after being stuck for a bit. The penultimate map also crashed a couple of times. Worse is that my saves disappeared and I had to level skip back to the last couple of levels (the generous equipment made this a non-issue in terms of challenge), however, I don't think this is to do with the mod itself and doesn't affect the score, but I'm mentioning it as a warning just in case I'm wrong. A good set with clear signs of improvement for most of it's duration, and worth playing after you're done with the best of the best TR2 sets, and, based on the improvements throughout, the author is capable of making their own addition to that if they keep going." - Mman (09-Sep-2025)
"this game deserves a way better raiting in my opinion, a very nice TR2 game with cool levels, if you love TR2 you should try it" - Raider278 (03-Sep-2025)
"It's an excellent and solid raid. I liked Egypt from the beginning. The game has great potential, even with the author's limited skills and the repetitive music, which is easily fixable by using boulders to activate music. I always give this tip to all beginners who use TR1/2. The gameplay keeps you entertained with a variety of tasks and some challenges you encounter. Despite its simplicity, you can have fun here, especially in the monastery. If the author had more experience, the project would be incredible. Maybe in the future, a remake of this first level to show the author's evolution would be amazing... Good luck with your next projects." - PedroCroft_ (16-Aug-2025)
"Like this builder's other offerings, there is a considerable amount of combat in this game, but it seemed to be a bit more toned down here (at least at the beginning). There's still plenty no doubt, but you get more supplies than you could ever need and if you have an optimal strategy to hand, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. The strong point is undoubtedly the varying sceneries Lara travels through (every level has a different look to it, my favourite being The Tunnels although the Monastery looked good too). Unfortunately the gameplay does let things down a bit. Aside from a couple of easy pushblock tasks, puzzles are rather on the scarce side and it's only really the combat that livens things up, but a few more cerebral sequences wouldn't have gone amiss. That said, I thought the way some of the areas connected was neat (via grated openings or areas you know you'll reach later from a different angle) and the boss battle provided an adrenaline rush, so overall not bad at all." - Ryan (17-May-2025)
"Bugs/Functionality Issues
  • Doors surrounding a mystic plaque can retain their solid collision after raising. Saving and loading after they are opened should solve this issue.
  • There are some pushblocks in The Temple On The Mountain that can be pulled into spots from which they cannot be moved further, softlocking the player.
What I Disliked
  • A sneaky nearly invisible ledge in The Temple On The Mountain that blends in too well with its surroundings.
What I Am Neutral About
  • Texturing is a mixed bag, with larger areas being decently varied in textures but side rooms having a lot of wallpapering with stretched textures.
What I Liked
  • The difficulty mainly comes from the combat, which throws 200 enemies at Lara throughout the levelset. Combat is a strength of this engine and a variety of enemies and weapons are used well.
  • Falling platforms, rolling boulders, and timed doors are just some of the traps Lara must overcome.
  • A majority of the levels feature open areas to explore and search for various keys or keycards. The non-linear gameplay stops just shy of being too repetitive.
Time: 3 hours 1 minute | Difficulty: Hard | Rating: 7.5/10 - Good" - JesseG (16-May-2025)
"Before i rate, heads up for possible softlock in aquatic level: flamethrower with green card voided for me. Otherwise very good, a compact adventure with simple yet creative moments, easy puzzles, harder combat but with tons of ammo given, and not so much trouble except from one boulder trap. Music is fitting but repeats on reload which is fixable. Near the end I think the builder wanted to finish fast, so gameplay surpasses the visuals and I'd redesign those parts. But it doesn't drag for long, and the finale is strong and rewarding. Go for it if you accept some combat damage." - DJ Full (09-Apr-2025)
