"Playing version dated Aug 18 2025. After having played and enjoyed the TR1 remake from this builder, I chose to play this TR2 remake as well. What I liked about the level: 1) I played this side by side with the Official Remastered TR2 in Classic Mode, and was again pleasantly surprised how identical both look and feel. I once again took screenshots while playing in Classic Mode and could not tell them apart. What I didn’t like or thought could be improved: 1) In the Diving Area level, there is a glitch where the FMV does not trigger when approaching the monk. TIP: I was able to get the FMV to run by using the TR4 Skip Level Cheat even though the inventory screen is the TR2 version. This is what I did: a) Get Lara to face north. I found it by hanging Lara from the grating at the entrance of the room and pulling up. b) Go to Inventory and stay on the Statistics clock. c) Type HELP and the screen flickers once. d) Hit ESC key and the FMV starts. 2) The snowmobile has a strange glitch with one blade rotating like a windmill. 3) Lara gets stuck inside the invisible dummy block under the raised bridge in Tibet Foothills. 4) The final boss is different from the original (assuming because it was not possible to replicate with the available options in TR4). Conclusion: This is the second “remake” type TRLE that I’ve played. I’m happy to say that NateH96’s version represents very closely what I consider a true “remake” of the original TR2 game in the TR4 format. As such, I have nothing but praise for this TRLE and value its’ very existence especially for those who’ve never played the original TR2 or for players where their original no longer plays on new computers. Well done and thank you to the builder for taking the time and effort to create this TRLE for players." - Lizard Queen (02-Nov-2025)
"Very accurate remake of Tomb Raider II with the Tomb Raider IV TRLE engine.

What it is: ...

  • An accurate as possible port of the TR2 game to the TR4 engine and the usual TRLE tooling.
  • There are no additions to the levels or other changes. There are some custom levels which heavily extend the old games with shiny new bells and whistles, but this is not one of them. It's just like TR2 as it was in 1997.
  • There is some heavy customization applied. Even the game menu looks like TR2 instead of TR4.
  • Of course, new TR3 and TR4 moves got disabled. There's spy glass or compass either.
  • It's not related to the official 2024 remaster, which at least has new higher res textures.
  • In summary: It's really like playing the old game.

Differences to the original Tomb Raider II: ...

  • Most objects which you can pick up in TR2 are just flat textures which always face the viewer. They got replaced by 3D objects. I assume the TR4 engine simply dropped the old rendering mechanism.
  • Enemy bodies disappear like in TR4. This one is weird, because there are TRLE customs which do not have disappearing bodies.
  • There are some thugs on snowmobiles in the tibet levels in the original TR2. I didn't see them here. (The other review also mentions this.) I assume the TR4 engine doesn't allow this.
  • It doesn't show how many secrets you found in a level. It only displays the total number of found secrets.
  • The total time keeps running during pause? Also the way you pause in TR4 was removed. Strange choice.

Problems and bugs: ...

  • The camera is a bit wonky. It's like the camera moves too far away when you press the look button. It can be unusable in narrow spaces.
  • Enemies behave strange sometimes. They get easily stuck. But unlike the other review claims, I don't think they were easier to defeat, as long as they didn't get stuck. However some of the "boss" enemies were suspiciously easy to kill.
  • I had crashes when the movie files were supposed to play. I fixed it by deleting them. (Probably an issue with my setup.)
  • Some missing or messed up textures, especially on the triangular sides of slanted blocks. I have no idea how that happened, while everything else is so accurate.
  • On the "The Deck" level, a trapdoor was a texture without collision.
  • On the same level, I could make a jump that apparently I wasn't supposed to succeed. I'm not sure if that's due to TR4 behavior (that wasn't or couldn't be disabled), or if it's a bug in the original TR2. I encountered something similar in a tibet level.
  • Multiple snowmobile bugs. The animation seemed completely broken, rotating parts of the vehicle that shouldn't rotate. Two times the snowmobile clipped through the level when I restored from savegames, making the savegame unusable. (I suggest careful savegame management when Lara is riding the snowmobile.) Sometimes, the snowmobile got stuck with little chance of recovery. In some places, I had severe trouble driving through an open square (like an invisible wall or obstacle), apparently associated with opened doors.

Summary: ...

  • It's a very accurate conversion, with some caveats and a small number of defects. It's playable and reasonably true to the original experience. It succeeds at its apparent goal.
  • I don't know why this was made and with what intention. (There isn't even a README or a single sentence that states the goal of this project, from what I can see.) The defects make me wary of recommending this as the best way to play TR2. Perhaps it can be recommended if you have trouble getting the original game to work, and if you don't want to play the remaster (which at least has very different looking textures).
  • I do appreciate that this proves that TR2 can be done on TRLE/TR4. Personally I have some problems with the TR2 engine and don't play custom TR2 levels because of this.
  • My rating in points is neutral. I just made the same rating of the only other review I wrote this review.

"Like Nathan Hurley's TR1 remake, I also found his attempt at TR2 to be surprisingly enjoyable. I think I enjoyed this one more, probably because we don't see many full TR2 remakes (although Lara and I have visited the Great Wall countless times) and the inclusion of The Golden Mask expansion is a definite bonus (which to my knowledge hasn't been "remade" in TRLE at all). Again, everything is faithful to the original, from the gameplay to the nostalgic environments and audio files, which still do send a shiver down my spine to this day. However, something did seem a bit haywire with the enemies. They were rather easy to defeat, either sticking to their patrol path (not approaching Lara or shooting at her), or in the case of the Bird Monster enemies, just standing there, roaring away and trying to look fearsome. The snowmobile thugs were also notably absent, but maybe that's not a bad thing...Also, the lighting in the later Golden Mask levels seemed a bit darker than usual (which made treacherous jumps a bit harder to execute), and there were a few missing textures around. The secret quest was fun to go through again, though and on the whole I found this fun to play." - Ryan (20-Sep-2025)
