Reviewer's comments
"Possibly the shortest of the bunch, there really isn't much going on for this level and the little there is can be questionable at times. The very first sequence for instance, has you going back and forth the same set of rooms through underwater tunnels until you get all three keys done. There's a lot of wading to be done and quite a few points the water rooms were somewhat buggy, with Lara wading underwater (I don't know how to describe this, but she was wading through 3+ clicks deep water) or waves misaligning rendering cracks in the water. Not a bad level by any means, but lacking a bit of polish and perhaps a few more thrilling activities. The tune at the end caught me off guard though lol. 20 minutes, 2 secrets. 04/24" - Treeble (30-Apr-2023)
"Fairly simple little level running in at around 30 minutes with no real challenges and hardly any enemies. The goal here is to explore and look carefully. Watch out for falling boulders. Nice enough textures and lighting was good. Not much else to say I'm afraid." - Torry (30-Oct-2022)
"Very enjoyable south pacific level this one. The setting by the sea, sand and coastal cliffs were lovely and the gameplay has the perfect balance of exploration and platforming. I really liked the puzzle at the beginning with the torch, fire, rope and boulder and the traps with the quick sand, lava and boulders were welcome with me as well as was the swing poles, waterfall current drops, tricky jumps, fixed cameras and the use of the optional kayak at the end. There is 4 artifacts to find, some keys and a few pick ups as well so theres plenty of searching around to do and i must say i did find it a bit silly after and explosion suddenly a ladder or key would appear that wasnt there before but it was all a joy i didnt want the level to end so quickly and i think a few more puzzles, less wading and more use of the kayak rather than making it optional would of made it even better i had such fun with that kayak accompanied by the music lol its so fast and it even spins underwater! i had a great time with this level and will add it to my list of replays" - John (22-Apr-2022)
"Paradise Island offers an engaing and rarely boring gameplay but the problem is that it ends sooner than one would expect. I personally am not a fan of very prolonged levelsets since some of them consist of lots of uninteresting filler tasks but this builder shows that he/she can actually build an entertaining enviroment and fill it with fun to do platforming and some key hunting. The kayak ride although skipable, was still a good touch for the ending. I personally enjoyed climbing to the upper rocks of the waterfall and then jumping around the quick sands in the caves. At points the game seemed a bit rushed, mainly near the end. The enviroment looked great at places, especially the outside areas but I find the inside temples to be quite lackluster at some points, although still pleasant enough for the player's eye. It's a good quick raid in a pretty scenery, but I think it could've been much better at the same time." - misho98 (19-Mar-2019)
"The shortest of the SPC levels and the ending took me by surprise. Not much to do here although it looked nice. A bit short." - Ryan (21-Jan-2016)
"Maybe I expected too much from this builder, but this is the level I least enjoyed of the seven contest levels. The gameplay never got tedious but I wonder if that is possible with the level ending way too early when just getting into it. Set in a rather coastal style of a level, the start reminded me a lot on TR 3 and I found that to be rather nice. The rope/boulder combination was pretty interesting, but the rest of the level seems to centre around a lot of jumps, especially on swingpoles, and wading across a huge lake which I prevented by sprinting through it (believe me - you will enjoy this level much more when you don't have to wade through those water all the time). The outside areas were quite well crafted though texturing was often crude and lighting rather bland; I also liked the usage of fixed cameras throughout the whole level which held up for a few nice views. And please don't miss the final kayak sequence. That was the undoubted highlight with well devised sound usage - the Lambada track - and perfect camera usage. Unluckily it was way too short and this level ended after not even 20 minutes with two fairly easy (if not to say unmissable) secrets found." - manarch2 (14-Jul-2012)
"Even in comparison to the general shortness of the 4 SPC levels I have played so far, this one is the shortest: less than half an hour, and that too only because about 10 minutes of that time are spent wading slowly in 2-click high water. There is very little gameplay: a very simple torch and boulder puzzle at the beginning; some running/swimming around for keys; a bit of pole swinging; lots and lots of wading; a very short but enjoyable kayak ride; and then the end (but not before a little bit more wading). There are some jewels/artefacts that you find along the way, but as there is no story, they don't seem that have any significance. There are no enemies except for 3 or 4 crocodiles; no non-environmental traps except for a boulder or two; and only one real puzzle.
Given that this level is by an artistic builder like Illyaine, I had expected some lovely visuals. There are some pretty areas, no doubt - but they are spoilt by the several glitches with the textures, like missing textures, or incorrectly aligned water levels in adjoining water rooms (so that breaks appear in the textures when the water waves). There are other technical issues too, like invisible walls and the end of the world bug. On a positive note: the atmosphere is good, and the several fixed camera angles (quite surprisingly) add to the experience.
Overall: A pleasant but not very memorable level, except for the kayak ride." - Mytly (08-Jun-2010)
"Wow, this was really a paradise. The views holding in breast. Gameplay was great." - Andzia9 (02-Feb-2009)
"Well that hole where one needed to use the keys eluded me big time. For the rest it was rather easy to find my way through here. Picked up even two secrets. I hated the fixed cameras in here, especially while swinging the poles, as it made me feel queasy. Nice idea with the boulders and the rising of the water. Trust Christoph to experience with a kayak and even with that bloody fixed camera that was fun to do. A pity that some areas do look like there wasn't much attention spend on textures, as a for example: two water rooms next to each other had a different swell and that looked rather weird" - Gerty (01-Apr-2008)
"This was quite enjoyable but very brief and without much challenge; the lighting effects were great and so was the atmosphere, although I would have preferred an environment a tad brighter for an exotic paradise. Nice and flowing gameplay, but really easy and apart from a certain amount of exploration that I had to do at the beginning to locate a few keys and underwater openings, the rest involved no surprises. Apart from the aforementioned keys, you have to locate a few artefacts as well, and close to the end there's also a jolly kayak ride waiting for you." - Ravenwen (07-Sep-2007)
"Simple and fluent gameplay characterizes this short level. The architecture is okay, but we see the same mossy rock textures almost everywhere, so the sight becomes boring quite soon. The kayak ride, specially with this music was pure fun, as Lara turns into the water under the low rock was hilarious, I didn't know the vehicle is capable of that. I liked that it's raining, and the lighting was fine. Unfortunately, apart from these, I can't recollect any original or remarkable moments, still the level has more in it than it shows, since it was quite enjoyable, and sometimes it's welcoming to have a light entertainment among those "serious" adventures. This little duckling didn't make it into a swan, but we do love little ducklings too, because they are cute." - Akcy (13-Aug-2007)
"This time Lara has to getting wet. It's raining and most of the places she must go are lakes or rivers; it's an humid level. Gameplay is good, but simple; no difficult tasks, few pickups, few enemies, only explore and advance. Your goal is to get finding through the game some blue artifacts advancing till the end. Finally you get the kayak to take a little ride across the river. Though it's not a great level I liked it." - Jose (31-Jul-2007)
"The second challenging level, but just that, after"Blood Mountain" was quite good. The problem though is that there aren't any puzzles, most of the level is about jumps, climbing over deadly mud water or dodging boulders and explosive tiles. There are skull keys to find, gems as usual and the usual enemies with the T-Rex that suddenly froze and left Lara alone to do her business. The four items you need are near the end of course and after a nice kayak ride you will finish the level with pleasant memories from it. The two golden roses weren't that hard to find with the second one being too obvious to miss." - Kristina (24-Jul-2007)
"Maybe I shouldn't have played Time Machine first. I felt almost cheated by Paradise Island, which took a bit less than a half four to play with virtually no enemies and no real puzzles to speak of. On the positive side, it's a visually attractive raid with horizontal pole swings and block jumps through waterways and jungle hillsides and tunnels. It just ends too soon, and there's not much of a challenge to it. I suggest it's suitable mainly for beginning players." - Phil (14-Jul-2007)
"A fairly short and straightforward variation of the South Pacific venture theme, but covers quite a magnitude of areas - lagoons, cascades, a swamp, mountains, fortresses and everything in between. It's quite fast paced as, be it water torrents, rolling balls, poll swings, fun jumps, crocodiles or simply the fun of it all, keep you moving on until you're done. True, it's a bit on the simplistic and harmless side and the author still has lots of experience to accumulate, but he (or she) seems to be on the right track and I suppose I can give no other recommendation than to keep going. As for the players - it's a short, simple and fun little adventure that most likely won't take you more than 30 minutes to get through, so give it a go!" - eTux (11-Jul-2007)
"This was the first South Pacific level I played and it posed as quite a lovely and tranquil experience. It wasn't really challenging and by looking around carefully you would always find what you needed to proceed(I got stuck at one point because I had missed a carefully hidden keyhole). There were two secrets to find and they were pretty much out in plain sight(although I actually managed to miss one of them on the first go) and to be located within the same area. The main goal here was to find four legendary crystals and they weren't very hard to get a hold of. There were few traps(mainly a mud pool, lava and some boulders) and I only encountered a couple of crocs. There is even a short kayak ride at the end, but the enjoyment is cut short as you can't go very far with it. This featured a very mellow start to the South Pacific Contest and all in all I had a pretty good time. The level was very easy and should be well suited for beginners too. Try this if you're in for about half an hour(net gaming time) of an enjoyable raid in this South Pacific paradise." - Selene (08-Jul-2007)
"Nice start to this level, with Lara swimming to the island. Hey, just a minute, it's raining - that not my idea of Paradise, that's my idea of home. Actually, it's quite a waterlogged level altogether. There's a lot of swimming (and wading) plus climbing and jumping about to interesting camera angles and rather inventive use of boulders. The ending is good too, with a fun, albeit short, canoe ride." - Jay (08-Jul-2007)
"It's the shortest level of the SPC (26 min.). The gameplay is not hard at all, and there's basically no enigma to be solved.; the visual part is a bit rough, revealing the unexperience of the creator. I've taken 2 very easy secrets." - PaoloM (06-Jul-2007)
"A totally enjoyable adventure in Paradise ! Lara's quest is to locate the four artefacts that have been hidden throughout the island - she will encounter few enemies, but that mud is a serious adversary. I thought the mountain tops were sculpted with much care and I wish the same had been applied to the lagoon areas. They screamed for a little more attention. Nevertheless, the venue is a pleasing one. The cameras are used in an interesting way in this game - lots of long side shots instead of the usual behind-the-character. Gameplay is straightforward. Raiders will enjoy this brief stay in Paradise !" - Mugs (04-Jul-2007)
"Pleasant, bright with nice use of the textures, this provide under half an hour of fun with only very few challenging moments as you search three keys and then drop down a few impressive waterfalls, fight off the occasional crocodile and pick up the four gemstones along the way. The pole swings are put to good use and the canoe is fun to paddle around in at the end. I thought the fixed cams were a bit oodly used, the wading is tedious as always and in those rooms at the corners the water animation had been forgotten. Found two golden rose secrets which were kind of hard to miss." - MichaelP (02-Jul-2007)
"A pleasant little level that is nice to work your way through, with a few solid jumping sections and a lovely little canoe ride near the end. Texturing and lighting were pretty good, but sometimes the camerawork was a bit annoying. Swinging over the poles in the quicksand room being a perfect example, as it kept on flicking the camera back and forth every two seconds. I found one secret, although the way to get to it involved a long wade through what seemed like miles of water, which was pretty boring to say the least. Overall, though, this was a good level that can easily be enjoyed through to it's conclusion." - Spike (02-Jul-2007)
"If you need 40 minutes in an easy-on-the-eye South Pacific environment, then this is ideal. There are very few enemies,no tricky puzzles or jumps, and rather straightforward progression. The use of falling water is a little indiscriminate (a waterfall at the start seems to tumble out of solid rock)and the canoe (although smart) serves no purpose except to allow Lara to have a little paddle-about.It's very solidly built, though, and is a pleasent and in-offensive little adventure." - Orbit Dream (02-Jul-2007)
"A short, pretty and enjoyable level where you will never have to face any challenge nor resolve hard puzzles or face difficult traps, or battle ferocious enemies , or simply get stuck. It is all quite simple according to what it seems, but I really delight myself playing this smart level. Aside from the fluent progression, what is really noticeable here is the use of fixed cameras especially when Lara is jumping or turning around the fixed bars. I usually dislike fixed cameras , but here it adds a lot to the experience. The setting is well done except for the big water area with the boulders which is too square and the junction at portals of the water textures in this same area which is not well done. But aside from that, a beautiful level. Also noticeable , the author has made a very pleasant lighting throughout all the level. 30 enjoyable minutes. I want more !" - eRIC (01-Jul-2007)
"It's nice to be back in the South Pacific. This is a throughly enjoyable 30 minute raid. The gameplay and puzzles are easy but they suit the enviroment and the progression is fluid from one area to another. It was also really nice to have the "quick mud" back. There are no real enemies to speak of except a few croc's, but the secrets are well hidden! The atmosphere is great, I especially liked the TR3 music - It really set the scene. And I loved the high fog effect, along with the light rain I felt I could have just washed up on a deserted island." - Kitkat (01-Jul-2007)
